I've done a lot of travelling and stayed in a lot of Hostels and Drop Bear is the best. Great house, great vibe. Easy to be social or retire to a quiet hammock if you want to be alone. Great bar. Great Staff. Cant recommend this place enough. Stay here. See for yourself.

My wife and I were excited to include this hostel in our itinerary based some info we read about it online. Expectations=exceeded.
Our private room was huge by hostel standards. The bathroom was large enough to practice hula hoop and had swanky, 80's tiles and a custom tile tub. You get one temperature of shower and it's called refreshing.
We spent a fair amount of time in the bar where Pablo Escobar himself drank rum and snorted lines off of prostitutes (or maybe not but it sounds cool). Simon made us 2 for 1 caipirinhas during happy hour and was charming and helpful. The swimming pool area was a popular social scene and they project movies on the side of the neighboring building at night.
This place really wins in all categories as far as hostels go including day trip planning, comfy and clean rooms, food & beverage, good music playlist, entertainment and if you bug the staff enough you can get a tour and history lesson about the days when the house used to be a cartel crash pad and center for all kinds of secret illegal activity.
Five stars! Or circle dot things or whatever.

There is nothing to fault about this hostel besides the location but it doesn't even matter because you don't need to leave! The Santa Marta town and beach isn't nice, the only other place you would want to go is Taganga which is only 10 mins by cab. Great staff, pool, bar, Gabriel the owner is great! History of the hostel is awesome too. Stay here!!

I only stayed here for one night because it was too late to travel back to my hostel in Taganga. I only stayed in Taganga because I wanted to dive but it turns out i could have stayed here and received a free lift to the dive sight every day. I should have done that, I will do this next time.

This place was great. I was immediately impressed. The hose is awesome, the rooms and bathrooms are clean. I didnt spend much time here during the day but I am definitely staying there next time for a longer stay.

Drop Bear Hostel is not exactly very well located. It's close to a supermarket and even the mall is still in walking distance (about half an hour), but to get to the city center you need a bus or a taxi.
But Santa Marta is not the kind of city where you want to spend days in the center.
The hostel itself is amazing. It's an old cartel house and it looks exactly like one with very spacious rooms, a big swimming pool, a cosy bar, a huge tv room and a well equiped kitchen. Everything was very clean when I was there, although the hostel had a lot of guests.
The staff has been very helpful giving information about the possibilities of Santa Marta and the surroundings (like Tyrona national park). Only the guy who was running the place was quite rude, when I asked him how I could get to Venezuela he told me that he wasn't a travel agency... Or maybe he just had a bad day.
Anyway, excellent hostel, not cheap but worth the money.

Hi thanks for your review. My apologies regarding the information on Venezuela, that comment was actually a joke as i couldnt answer some of your questions on Venezuela, i think it may have been lost in translation, Australian sense of humour, I should work on that :)
Regarding location, it's actually not beneficial to be in the city centre in Santa Marta as you're far away from all the attractions. We are closer to Taganga, Rodadero, Bahia Concha, Parque Tayrona, Minca, San Pedro Alejandrino etc. The buses to town only take 5 minutes and cost 70cents and pass right by the hostel. Not to mention the city centre is hot, dirty, noisey, and at night time a bit dangerous. It's so small you can see it all in about 3 hours.

My husband and I are moving on from Drop Bear today and we are SO sad to go. This hostel has everything going for it and I would gladly stay for weeks more of our travel time permitted it. Be sure to stay here - it's a tourist detonation in its own right, being an ex-cartel house (get the tour from Gabriel, the owner! So good!) and it is just an all-around perfect base for your activities in Santa Marta.

The wifi is strong, the kitchen is huge and kept clean, the common areas are to die for (gorgeous pool and huge TV room, great bar too with delicious cocktails!), the beds are so comfortable and I slept like a baby even in the cheapest dorm with no AC (super spacious and airy), and although it doesn't have the most central of locations, the staff are incredibly helpful in organizing all your excursions (did the Lost City trek through the hostel with Wiwa tours, a lesser-known but soon-to-be top indigenous company, and had the BEST time, and also went to Costeno Beach for two days to surf, all organized through the reception).

The showers in the garage could have had better pressure but overall I have no complaints - this place was a dream.

My husband and I stayed for some nights in Santa Marta and we also left our luggage there while enjoying other places around!

Many good things about this place!

ROOMS
We stayed in dorms and they are very clean and big! Beds are really good and there fans and 2 balconies in the room, so its super fresh! Santa Marta is really hot!!! Its important to sleep in a fresh place! Dorm 2 is the best in our opinion

TOILET
Only one complain about that! The shower is not good at all. The water is not enough for a good shower and there is not enough pressure. This is the only point they could improve! Although the bathroom is huge and it is private in the dorm, which is good!

COMMON AREAS
That is the best! A beautiful and clean swimming swimming pool, good relaxing chairs, a huge room to watch movies with many DVDs and a really comfy and big couch! There is a table tennis in this room too!!!! Super cool!!!

KITCHEN
A big and good kitchen to cook but it could have more utensils! Not enough boards or pans to cook. They also sell good food! And there is free coffee the whole day!

They have free storage in a safe room that is locked. The internet does not work in the room but it works in all the common areas! Staff is really friendly and always keen to help!

It is a bit far from the center but there is a good supermarket close by.

We would come back!!!
