The staff at the hotel were discreetly helpful, quick to answer any queries and always cheerful. Delightful. I stayed in the Havana room which was great - lovely to have the option of air conditioning and a ceiling fan. Beautifully furnished even though desk was cluttered with technology! The shower cubicle leaked water onto the bathroom floor and the paint was peeling on the floor. It would be good to have a light over the mirror in the bathroom. Unfortunately the door to the Havana room had gaps under it and to one side so mosquitoes found their way in whatever my efforts to keep them out and avoid getting bitten! Don Angel smoked in the dining area despite the hotel saying it was 100% tobacco smoke free. The downstairs pool was empty - in maintenance the staff said. It was surprising that the water shortage in Santa Marta wasn't mentioned and it wasn't suggested that guests could help to save water...
Single travellers beware...A member of staff helpfully explained possible tours on arrival and I was keen to go to Parque Tayrona. However, it turned out the hotel charge tours by room not by person so I would have had to pay double. Completely unjust!! I ended up fixing up my own tour through a local travel agency.

Casa del Farol was our favourite hotel of our 3 weeks in Colombia, and possibly of our entire 3 month long trip. We ended up staying 4 nights as we liked it so much we used it as a base to visit Tayrona, Palomino etc. The hotel is a really old building with two lovely central courtyards. The atmosphere is totally calming, even when the hotel was full it was relaxing and we never saw more than one other couple at a time using the rooftop pool, which was a great suntrap and a really nice place to watch the sunset.
We stayed in 3 rooms - New York, Rome and Paris. All were beautiful and full of character. New York and Rome were just standard doubles but were by far the biggest and nicest rooms we had during our trip. Lovely decorations, not cheesy, big windows and luxurious bathrooms. New York was on the ground floor but noise didn't bother us at all. Breakfast was great, an imaginative menu of at least 8 different options, themed by country and cooked to order. Juice was freshly squeezed and coffee was good.

Location was perfect - in the historic centre of town and on a road parallel to Parque de Los Novios, a square with tons of good restaurants. But you couldn't hear any of the noise from the hotel. It felt totally safe to walk around.

What we appreciated most about the hotel was the staff - all
were lovely and helpful but Anthony was just amazing. He greeted us with a local welcome drink, spoke perfect English (big relief as our Spanish is terrible), helped us to arrange shared lifts to Tayrona, answered every question imaginable and was generally awesome. He was genuinely lovely and eager to please, and made us feel totally at home.

The hotel was great value too - real luxury for £60/$85 a night. In short, you should definitely stay here.

Stylish boutique hotel that is one of the oldest houses in Santa Marta. Each room is themed, we stayed in the Cape Town Suite. which had an African theme. The room was spacious, comfortable, with nice decorative touches. In addition it had a fridge and safe. The bathroom was large with a powerful shower. Breakfast was served in a pleasant courtyard and was the best breakfast we had in Colombia. The orange juice and coffee was good and there was a choice regarding main course of the breakfast which was nicely presented. The staff were very pleasant and helpful, speaking very good English. The owner was available and offered helpful advice. We went on trips to Tayrona National Patrk and Minca arranged through the hotel, who would check to see if other guest wanted to go on the trips, thus reducing the cost as well as providing the opportunity to meet fellow travellers. The driver for both trips was very pleasant and helped to make the trips enjoyable. There was a nice rooftop terrrace and pool, with views of the cathedral. A very enjoyable stay and good value for money.

We were a bit freaked out when we first arrived in Santa Marta. Soldiers (at least young men in camo with weapons) were on every corner. We were relieved when we finally found our hotel...Marsol dropped us nearby but we had no idea where to go....anyway, the folks at Casa del Farol helped us relax and feel comfortable immediately. We stayed in "Roma" for two nights and were delighted.

Later in the evening we heard former President Uribe around the corner from our hotel...he was on the campaign trail and this explained the police/soldiers/guns. They were gone the next day.

The Hotel is in a perfect location--walking distance to many restaurants, Parque des Novios, and the sea. Try Hemingway in the Parque and La Canoe right next door! We enjoyed happy hour at Via Roma a few blocks away by the sea to maintain the theme!

Breakfast was delicious! The people "muy amable". We recommend the hotel for your stay in Santa Marta. We moved on to Rodadero to enjoy a month at the beach but returned to Santa Marta for the occasional dinner out.

This hotel is small, friendly, lovely with a wonderful oasis in the interior courtyard. We stayed in the Simon Bolivar room on the 3rd floor. No other rooms but this room up there. We had our own patio and sitting area which was really private. My wife loved that. The staff at the hotel were great. Helpful and friendly. Every morning we came for breakfast which had variety and good coffee! I came from Canada needing a place to rest and this was a great start to getting that. We loved the pool on the roof where we could do some reading and soaking. Anyways what more can I say - good location and a great place and we would return if we come to Santa Marta again.
