La Casa del Farol Hotel Boutique

In our trip around Colombia we haven't been very lucky with the hotels so we went directly to La Casa del Farol which we found it on internet earlier.
This boutique hotel is located in historical center of Santa-Marta, in a colonial house. Sandra & Angel, the owners are very nice, friendly and careful people, they speak English pretty well, something it's not very easy to find in Colombia.
They took care of us all the time with their kind advices and arrangements. We visited Minca, The Tayrona park and Crystal Beach, amazing places each with it's charm.
The hotel is decorated by them with a very special taste, all the rooms are decorated in accordance with their name origin and have own style.
we stayed in the room Cape Town, it was lovely in accordance to África. It's spacious, very comfortable and clean.
The breakfast is one of the best things, nice and tasty, they have different dishes to choose, and the staff it's really warm. It's very good located, close to the restaurant area, they also own a cozy spanish restaurant, the food is delicious.
If you travel to Santa-Marta I definitely recommend you to stay in this hotel, the service it's really special.

We chose this hotel for its nice reviews and was a success. After two days in Tayrona Park having cold showers we had the best shower ever, perfect power, heat and good quality soaps . The truth is that everything has good quality, comfortable bed, very clean, very stylish and charming staff. The owners are a very friendly Spanish couple who gave us lots of tips, more beaches were to go, restaurants, bars, etc...We decided to stay 2 more nights because we were so comfortable. Our room was inspired in Havana, each room is different, amazing breakfasts and nice views from the pool. They have been our best 3 days in Colombia, thanks to sandra, angel and all the staff.

Clara and Angel, the owners, could not have been more welcoming and host-like on my return to their hotel last night from 2 nights in tayrona. Stayed in the Paris room upstairs which was great in a shabby chic kind of way. On my first stay, I was first placed in habana, which was certainly not as appealing, set off the breakfast area and did smell a little damp. Understand there had been some leak.

Location-wise, it's right in the centre of the old town , if that's what you want. (Note Saturday night bookers that the main church bells go off at 7am sunday morning and are quite loud, so thank goodness I had a early morning flight)

Breakfast was simple but a granola made a nice change to 2 weeks of EGGS!

First, the pluses: great location in the old part of Santa Marta, a nice but tiny pool on the roof, good breakfast and very nice waitress.

Minuses: no hot water in the sink; musty damp smell and peeling paint in our room (New York); had no towels in the room when we arrived, and had to ask for them on the second day also; internet connectivity was very spotty. Also was not wild about the gal at the front desk who, after I appeared and explained that we had no hot water or towels, kept me waiting while she accepted a lengthy phone call. In that the call came in while I was talking to her, she should have put it on hold.

The owners were not around during our stay.

I would avoid staying in the rooms named New York and Havana, as they both give directly on to the breakfast area. They are also dark and have no light for reading in bed.

We overheard another guest asking if, because of "the problems", which he enumerated as the water running down the wall from the roof in his first room, the internet not working, and the lack of hot water, could he extend his checkout time until 2 p.m. The gal at the front desk said no.

Room Tip: New York smells damp and musty; it and Havana give directly on to the breakfast area. Accept them o...

My husband and I visited Colombia with friends for 3 weeks, and we stayed here for one night before they met up with us.

As far as Santa Marta goes, this is an excellent option. It is small and charming, the staff are kind and competent, breakfast is decent, there is some hot water in the shower (as we learned, a rare and precious thing in Colombia), and it is within walking distance of plenty of Santa Marta sights and restaurants. We appreciated the thought that clearly went into the room decor.

One quick tip - in our experience, the recommended restaurant across the street (Made in Spain) looked beautiful, but the food was pretty bad. Like .. inedible. We had a hard time finding decent food in Santa Marta (actually, in Colombia). Ouzo and Hotel Gourmet Plaza (which has a small restaurant inside), both in walking distance of this hotel, were on the better end.

Two minor things - the pool was kind of dirty when we were there, and our room was also directly adjacent to the breakfast area. This was a non issue as no one else was there when we were (or we didn't see them if they were), but I can see how this could be annoying if you're trying to sleep in and there's a group eating breakfast. If you think this would bother you, I'd suggest asking for a room upstairs.

In all, a really solid option for Santa Marta. The only reason I don't give it five stars is because we also stayed at a place right outside of the city (Hotel Merecumbe, by Tayrona) and that was truly a five star experience.

We took two one day tours which this hotel recommended. They work with a small touring company and they can e-mail their brochure.
The tours were fabulous. It was a case of each day passing all expectations. Don't wait, call or e-mail and sign up. It was worth every peso. Our tour guide Mauricio spoke excellent english learnt in New Zealand and Australia.
It is a boutique hotel. There was a small breakfast menu. Food was excellent.
We ate at the french restaurant-hotel next door for dinner. That was very good.
We didn't have enough time to eat at the restaurant the hotel owns across the street. Most likely it was our loss.
Each of the hotel rooms are have different themes. With an old building I guess each of the rooms are different.
We stayed in the Havana room. Very spacious. It is an eclectic mix of the old and the new. In the tropics some times you need to open the windows for fresh air. We did that followed by turning on the air conditioning. More than enough cold air was available.
I would check to see if a room with a balcony is available if we returned here again.
We used the dip pool on the roof and spent evening time up there.

Room Tip: Take the time to e-mail or call to get the room you want.

A small (6-room) hotel in a good central location in Santa Marta, walking distance to many bars and restaurants. Large room with nice furnishings. Excellent complimentary a la carte breakfast with lots to choose from. The pool on the roof is too small for swimming but big enough for cooling off.
I was not amused by how the front desk is run. Upon arrival I was given a higher room rate than what I had booked. I provided my booking confirmation, but to no avail. My booking was wrong they were right.
Very unprofessional.
