“Quiet and relaxed”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 8, 2013

My wife and I spent 4 nights over Christmas there and found it to be a quiet and relaxed hostel. It was peak holiday season so was a little more expensive than normal. Breakfast isn´t included but the cafe offers excellent options for both breakfast and lunch at a very reasonable price. The hostel was clean and the people there were very helpful and friendly with great advice and guidance. The room did get hot at night so the fan was never off. Agree with the post below, open windows allow bugs in and the showers were cool, but very refreshing and welcome. The wifi was intermittent and wasn´t available in our room when we were there. I would recommend this hostel.

We stayed here for 2 nights and found it to be simple but ok. There is no aircon and gets EXTREMLY hot at night. Also the windows have nothing on them to stop bugs coming in. There's only cold water in the shower, but it was refreshing.
The hostel was pretty quiet itself, not much happening compared to other hostels. Good for older couple!
The man who runs the place was Really helpful!! They also have quite a yum breaky!!

Sarah,
Glad you had a good time at Aluna Casa y Cafe. We do have a number of rooms with a/c and those without a/c have fans and windows with louvers/blinds so as to aid in the circulation of air as it is hot on the Caribbean as you know. Thanks for the comments about Patrick. He has a wealth of knowledge about the region from his over 12 years living here. And the breakfasts are quite yummy...aren't they....
Thanks again
Aluna

I've stayed at Aluna twice now, once with my girlfriend and once with my husband -- both times for over a week. Patrick and his staff are very helpful and attentive. The place is amazingly clean, quiet, and located in a convenient area on a tree lined street. The Cafe has delicious cafe lattes, and the huevos rancheros are yummy. Aluna has the feel of a hotel, but with low hostel prices.

Comfortable beds, relaxing patio and terrace areas to enjoy views around the city and sunset. WIFI signal is really good in the dining area but not so much as you move away or upstairs. Breakfast is good but not included in the price. Staff have an extremely pleasant manner and know alot about local surroundings. Kitchen on the terrace for guests is useful but lacking some good utensils. Would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: You pay extra if you want a room with air conditioning

I have just spent a week in Santa Marta staying at the Aluna Casa and Cafe, and for my needs it has been a phenomenal place. The rooms are clean and spacious, the breakfast filling, the information up to date and the location exactly what I am looking for. This is a place that is ideal for those on a budget but who want to pay an extra $1 or Euro to enjoy a little more comfort. There are dorms and private rooms, an inviting sala and a rooftop terrace with the guest communal kitchen. I would hesitate to recommend Aluna to any couples or solo travellers interested in being located walking distance from the colonial centre of Santa Marta.

This October we went to Santa Marta on a short school break. I searched and searched and searched for a decent hotel that wouldn't break our budget but they were all so incredibly expensive and/or just frankly awful! I stumbled on "Aluna: Casa y Cafe'" quite by sheer fortune when I checked the Speciality Lodging section on TA. I was skeptical because we're not backpackers, we're in our early 50's with teenage boys, never been to a hostel before and I was scared it would be way too uncomfortable for us. What a wonderful surprise! From the correspondence, to meeting the owner Patrick and his staff, to seeing the immaculately clean and spacious rooms to tasting the BEST breakfast we had in our week in Santa Marta and Tayrona! Patrick and his staff happily help out in any and all ways possible: recommending great restaurants, where to get local transportation for wherever you want to go and helping to organize outings if you want to explore within and beyond Santa Marta. I can't recommend this little hostel more. Having seen the other hotels/hostels in Santa Marta on our outings, I can say they don't appear to have anything over Aluna!

Clean, well decorated rooms, with ceiling fans and the option of paying extra for air-conditioning. Irish man, Patrick, is very helpful. He also has a small finca in the cloud forest nearby, which you may be able to visit. Breakfast and more available in the cafe. Guest kitchen and seating on the roof/top floor. Double rooms on bottom two floors, dorms on top floor.

Room Tip: First floor rooms are lighter.
