“Comfortable and relaxing”
Reviewed November 14, 2012

Comfortable beds, relaxing patio and terrace areas to enjoy views around the city and sunset. WIFI signal is really good in the dining area but not so much as you move away or upstairs. Breakfast is good but not included in the price. Staff have an extremely pleasant manner and know alot about local surroundings. Kitchen on the terrace for guests is useful but lacking some good utensils. Would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: You pay extra if you want a room with air conditioning

I have just spent a week in Santa Marta staying at the Aluna Casa and Cafe, and for my needs it has been a phenomenal place. The rooms are clean and spacious, the breakfast filling, the information up to date and the location exactly what I am looking for. This is a place that is ideal for those on a budget but who want to pay an extra $1 or Euro to enjoy a little more comfort. There are dorms and private rooms, an inviting sala and a rooftop terrace with the guest communal kitchen. I would hesitate to recommend Aluna to any couples or solo travellers interested in being located walking distance from the colonial centre of Santa Marta.

This October we went to Santa Marta on a short school break. I searched and searched and searched for a decent hotel that wouldn't break our budget but they were all so incredibly expensive and/or just frankly awful! I stumbled on "Aluna: Casa y Cafe'" quite by sheer fortune when I checked the Speciality Lodging section on TA. I was skeptical because we're not backpackers, we're in our early 50's with teenage boys, never been to a hostel before and I was scared it would be way too uncomfortable for us. What a wonderful surprise! From the correspondence, to meeting the owner Patrick and his staff, to seeing the immaculately clean and spacious rooms to tasting the BEST breakfast we had in our week in Santa Marta and Tayrona! Patrick and his staff happily help out in any and all ways possible: recommending great restaurants, where to get local transportation for wherever you want to go and helping to organize outings if you want to explore within and beyond Santa Marta. I can't recommend this little hostel more. Having seen the other hotels/hostels in Santa Marta on our outings, I can say they don't appear to have anything over Aluna!

Clean, well decorated rooms, with ceiling fans and the option of paying extra for air-conditioning. Irish man, Patrick, is very helpful. He also has a small finca in the cloud forest nearby, which you may be able to visit. Breakfast and more available in the cafe. Guest kitchen and seating on the roof/top floor. Double rooms on bottom two floors, dorms on top floor.

Room Tip: First floor rooms are lighter.

I stayed at Aluna for 10-12 days over a few ins and outs. So I got to test a few of the rooms and get to know the staff.
Aluna is more of a guest house than hostel. It has as many private rooms if not more than dorms. It's clientele is often a little older (if you want late nights drinking La Brisa Loca is the place for you!)
I preferred the larger room up top with a whole wall of windows to open one the barmy nights in Santa Marta. The 6 bed dorm downstairs was a little stuffy even with 3 fans.
But for me the best part of Aluna is the staff. Always smiles and ready to help. I stayed on in Santa Marta for some months and was always welcomed if I needed to stop by with any request.
The only down point I would say is the kitchen could do with a refresh of some new pans etc.

Friendly and helpful staff, well designed and executed facilities, nice rooms (although maybe a bit dark), very clean, decent breakfast, lots of info available, and a good value. Location isn't right in the thick of it, which is good, but it's close enough to be convenient. Highly recommended. (A minor negative is the 2-for-1 book exchange--I dont see the value for travelers because who carries two books at a time?)

It's a really nice hostel, close to the center of Santa Marta. The owner is a very nice guy and the service is quite good.
The only problem is the lack of a fully-functioning airconditioning and none of the installed TV's is working, That's a 'lil sad.
