La Brisa Loca Hostel

Its a fine place for the younger generation. I booked in at the last minute based on Lonely Planets recommendation. I am in my 50s and not a backpacker so i make allowances for that . I booked a single with air con at 70000pesos per night ' now thats expensive for Colombia ! The building, the pool, the bar, location, the desk upstairs are all great BUT my room which was called a Suite (!!!) was like a large cell, darkish, poor lighting and definitely needed to be cleaned. The floor was dusty underfoot, the bathroom mirror stained from the last guests shaving etc , the remnants of someones half used cake of soap and empty shampoo bottle adorned the bathroom but to top it off was a scary ball of hair (pubic and other) on the bathroom floor . . . disgusting!
Added to this was no towels in the room, no soap (apart from the leftover), nowhere to hang clothes or even to put my bag apart from on the floor (and remember this is called a SUITE) . Plus the lumpiest pillows in Colombia.
Seriously guys you need to pay more attention to your cleaning and housekeeping
if you intend to charge 70000 pesos for a single (plus your credit card fee.)
Surely you should check the rooms before a guest moves in. And my final tip is when sheets have bloodstains on them throw them out or use them as cleaning rags! Dont put them back on guest beds even if it is a backpackers establishment.
I moved out after 1 night and stayed at a nice older hotel with a beachfront oceanview balcony, aircon, refrigerator, spotlessly clean, nice sheets n towels n pillows 60000 pesos with no credit card surcharge
Good Luck with your venture but improve the housekeeping.

Stay here if you want to party a lot-you will not be disappointed! Also they have a great pool. However be warned parties go on late and loud so don't stay here if you just want to sleep a lot :)

They put on good nightly food at cheap prices.

They could improve on cleanliness. We stayed in one double room 3 different times as we were off on tours, and I don't think the floor had been cleaned over the period of a week that our stays covered. It was pretty disgusting-feet would get very dirty just walking a few steps to the bathroom!

Good location. Bar and great food on site (in same building). Atm's within couple hundred feet. City beach 3 block walk. Taxi's stop at front door. Deck on roof for sunsets. Great people, owners + staff. I am going back next month to stay longer this time.

If you are going to Santa Marta I would firstly recommend you to stay in Taganga, this little charming fisherman village about 15 minutes away. But if you decide to make your base in Santa Marta and you are looking to have a very good time, meet loads of crazy travelers and party every night, then stay at La Brisa Loca. It is a new hostel owned by these two Californian brothers who really know how to enjoy life. The best about this place has to be its bar and pool table. There's always something going on and someone to meet. Even if you do not stay at the hostel, go and check out the bar at night.
Not the tidiest place I've seen though... the rooms, bathroom and swimming pool could use a bit more cleaning.
Great location and price! Recommended for the more "adventurous"

Run by two surfer-dudes from California. Nice place, clean enough, has a nice small swimming pool - I took dips in the evenings. Nice bar with a nearby functional pool table and the the guys will pull out their 'Rock Band' equipment and play with you if you want. Nice location in the central part of the city near the beach. Most staff speak English and are quite nice.

The American guys who started this hostel have done a brilliant job restoring that original building while adding their own personal design touches from the molding to the open air flat screen tv room. The warm gold and orange colors are beautiful night and day, the hammock room is great for a book, and the communal dinners are fab for meeting new folks, but by far the highlight of La Brisa Loca is the brothers' personally designed mosaic-tiled pool in the courtyard. Enjoy a refreshing swim after a hot day of touring while watching a telenovella from the water. I can't rave about the atmosphere or service enough. Go!

This is going to be one of the biggest hostels in all of South America some day. It's got all the right ingredients... billiards & social rooms, bar & kitchen, pool, and all very clean. Owned by a couple of great travelers who have lots of stories to share, and recommendations where to go next.
