“Fantastic Spot- don't miss it”
Reviewed February 27, 2013

The location here is amazing. In a quiet part of the island, right next to the sea and a great snorkeling spot right in the back. Great bike ride to San Luis beach etc.. The folks at the hotel itself go way above and beyond their duty to provide exceptional service and a great experience. I sadly was quite sick during a lot of my stay and so had to stick around the room, but everybody was so incredibly friendly, kind and helpful especially during those circumstances. The meals every night were also delicious. Really this is the best way to do San Andres, skip the center and come straight here. (great pool too) Beautiful.

Location is isolated, no beach, access to water for swimming is difficult due to sharp coral shoreline and the surge makes the climb up and down a ladder dangerous. Nothing much to do there except watch the sunset once a day. Rooms are dark inside and very simply furnished.

This place was great! A friend and I stayed there for 4 nights in February 2013. The rooms are super clean and very basic but spacious with a mini fridge and air conditioning. They offer hot water in the showers which seems rare for the island. There is a pool with a separate shallower kiddie pool and a swim-up bar that wasn't staffed while we were there. The breakfasts were great- typical Colombian with local fruit, coffee, juice, eggs or an egg dish (one day we got french toast!) usually with toast. The hotel has a dive shop attached which is super convenient if you're going to dive at all while you're there. New divers practice with the instructors in the pool, but were never a nuisance.

The best parts of staying here:
1. The owners: Lindsay (spa?) and Claudia are the sweetest couple you will ever meet. They are so nice and accommodating and they speak perfect English if your spanish isn't very good.

2. The west side of the island is the better, calmer side of the island both people-wise and ocean current-wise. If you want a mellow (as opposed to one jam-packed with people, loud music and tiny beaches) vacation, the west side is the way to go and this hotel was PERFECT as far as ocean access- it's just across the road from rocky cliffs and a ladder down to the sea that was a million times better than a beach- snorkeling/diving, cliff jumping and swimming in perfect turquoise water made up our very best days here! This, in our minds was far better than a beach. It was simply perfect.

The only downside- and I'm scraping here- was that the WiFi didn't work in the rooms/areas farther from the office. Oh, and there were only about 5 channels (all spanish) on the tv... but who needs tv in this amazing place?

The main downtown (also bustling with chaos) is a 15-minute taxi ride (about COL 20,000-25,000) or a 20 minute bus ride (COL1600 per person)... downtown is mostly duty free shops overflowing with stuff you can get in the US. You are definitely not in the middle of things at Sunset Hotel, but why do you need to be? Take it easy and enjoy your vacation!

I should add that my friend and I stayed at a different hotel for the first night in San Andres and it was horrible (filthy and unmaintained) and was more money per night.

Room Tip: If you book early enough, request an ocean view room- there are only two of them at the end next to...

I stayed with the Sunset for a week over new year and I think the title says it all - great location, great friendly family run place, I just wish I could have stayed longer/go back sooner - Marley and family put on a great night too for New Year with a local band and great food! I had a really good time, many thanks and Hola to Mary-Anne :-)
I didn't go diving this time but it looked like a very professional operation and I heard only good reports on the diving so you might want to give it a try here

We only had one night in San Andres, but it was a perfect night at the Sunset Hotel & Spa. The hotel itself was pristine, bright, and comfortable, and the service was impeccable. We enjoyed a dip in the ocean and the pool, ate an incredible fish dinner, and slept soundly. We were traveling with our 5 month old son and were given a crib for him to sleep in. The proximity of the rooms to the restaurant and pool meant that we could put him to sleep and still be up and about in the evening. Overall, it truly was a wonderful night!

My son and I spent a delightful week of diving and relaxing at this unique, family owned and operated hotel in October, 2012. We couldn't have chosen a better place to experience the true beauty of this island. It was definitely in the quietest part of the island, yet we went into town almost every evening to enjoy the sights and sounds with other tourists and locals.
Entrance to the Caribbean was only 30 meters from my room, and the beautiful and clear water was a soothing 90 degree F during our stay.

Although the rooms were not fancy, the bed was comfortable and clean, the air conditioner (if needed) worked well, and the views and hospitality of the owners made up for any lack of luxury that one might be expecting.

The food offered at the on site restaurant was the best and most reasonably priced we found during our stay.

Many US travelers have reservations about visiting Colombia, of which San Andres is a part. But I felt safer during our trip than many places in the Caribbean, or even in the US. And the hospitality of the people of Colombian was such a pleasant surprise. Would I go back? Already planning the next trip!

Room Tip: The owners were very responsive to my email requests for ocean views. I preferred the second floor...

The Sunset Hotel and Spa's owners and staff provide service beyond one's expectation. The food is the best on the island! We had been told by former visitors the staff would prepare special dishes, Miss Marley and her kitchen staff surprised us at every meal. Gabriel, Miss Marley's son is a valuable resource for special places on the island to see and enjoy. Marley's other son, Roger runs the dive center and shop. He is considered to be the best of best dive masters on San Andres Island. Check out our pictures.

Room Tip: All rooms are very clean and comfortable! Love the balcony breeze!
