“A wonderful experience!”
Reviewed October 21, 2012

I decided to enjoy my vacation in San Andres and while looking for a nice hotel, I found that Sunset Hotel had very good reviews from other fellow travellers. I decided to stay in this hotel and I was not dissapointed at all. The location is great for those who like to be away from noisy streets or crowds. The service was excellent and the food was delicious!

The hotel is located in a very nice and quiet area of San Andres (Southwest). There is public transportation from the hotel to the town and main sandy beaches (San Luis, Rocky Cay, etc). One can also walk from the hotel to "la piscinita" and the blowhole or just rent a bicycle!

For those who like diving and snorkeling, this hotel is the best option for that. The hotel is just in front of one of the best spots for snorkeling and diving in San Andres! and it also has a nice place where one can sit to contemplate the beautiful sunsets and sea views.

The family who runs this hotel is amazingly helpful and kind. They gave me good tips on local restaurants in San Andres and in the cays (Bibi's place!!). There is a lady who prepares local food/snacks on Sundays and it is just 10 min by foot from the hotel. You can ask at the reception for directions to get to Marleny's place.

The food at the hotel was very delicious, fresh and healthy. There are some outdoor tables where one can sit and enjoy those delicious breakfasts!

Lastly, I would like to thank the family who runs the hotel for making feel like home. I fully enjoyed my vacation and I terribly miss San Andres and its people.

Before Travelling I thoroughly checked the prices and reviews of the hotels of San Andres, and based on my search I chose the Sunset Hotel. I am so glad I did; our time there was the best part of our stay. We had a large air-conditioned room, comfortable bed, and relaxing tranquility. Breakfasting on the patio in the midst of a beautiful garden facing the ocean, romantic dinners under the stars, enjoying the excellent food and outstanding attentiveness of the staff, it was perfect. The snorkelling in front of the hotel is amazing, easily accessible and the water is warm and clear, with more species of fish, corals, sponges than I have seen anywhere. The Sunset Hotel is located on the quiet south end of the island, perfect for those whom like to be away from the noise and haste of the big hotels. Access around the island by island bus was easy, but taxis on the island aren't cheap, so we took the bus into town each day. It passes by the hotel every 20 minutes or so, is an interesting way to see the island, and costs less than $1 CDN/USD for the 25-minute ride. We stayed one week. Next vacation we will return and my sweetheart will take the offered dive course so we can spend more time in the beautiful water !

Room Tip: Due to the 'warm' climate, hot water showers aren't a necessity, but if you want one ask...

It was hard saying goodbye to the Sunset Hotel. I don't have much to add onto what other's have said about the place - it's pretty much spot-on. A wonderful hotel run by friendly, helpful folks whose main goal is to make your stay as pleasant as possible. Rooms and facilities were clean and the food was great.

Echoing what others have said about the location - it's a little out of the way - but that's what we were hoping for. Snorkeling off the rocks across the road was fantastic. The beaches in San Luis were some of the best, and only a 30-45 min walk across the island. Buses were easy enough to get to town/around. To us, the only drawback of the location was lack of places to eat dinner nearby as the spots close to it (La Piscinita, West View) do close early.

All in all, a fantastic place to unwind, soak some sun, and oggle the impossibly colored Caribbean sea.

We stayed at the sunset hotel for 5 nights in June 2012 and reckon it was the nicest hotel experience we've had in 3 months of travelling through Colombia and Ecuador!

If your main reason for coming to San Andrés is to sit on a sandy beach, then this possibly isn't the best hotel for you, as the shore in front of the hotel is rocky - but if you've come to relax in absolute peace and tranquility, snorkel, dive, walk, ride bikes, eat delicious home-cooked food, watch the sunset over the calmest sea you've ever seen, zip around in a golf cart etc then it certainly is for you!

The hotel is on the quiet side of the island - quite far from the main town (you may well consider this a bonus!)  But the sea is much calmer than in town making it perfect for snorkelling and diving.  If you do want to head into bars and restaurants taxis are expensive, but buses are easy (they pick you up and drop you off wherever you want) or hiring bike or a golf cart (or mule which has lights for night-time driving) is great fun.  You can also easily get over to sandy beaches with a short bus/bike ride (or a bit of a long walk).

The hotel is SPOTLESSLY clean - even the outside spaces and pool are washed every single day. Rooms are spacious with good aircon and fridges and they'll provide you jugs of drinking water for free.  Beds are comfy.

As a family run place it's very relaxed and friendly, with 'Mama', Gabriel or his wife always around to help however they can.  They clearly take a lot of pride in the place and making guests feel welcome and looked after.  We had most of our meals at the hotel as the food was delicious - fresh, simple home cooked and plenty of fruit/veg.  Don't expect a menu with lots of choices though - it's more of a set meal situation (although I'm sure you could make requests).  On our last night they even put a table down right by the sea for us, with no one else to be seen anywhere!

The dive shop 'Sharky's' on sight is run by Roger (another son) and the dive  masters are relaxed, friendly and very professional.  They have very reasonable prices and the closest access to some of the best dive sites on the island.

Highly recommend this place to anyone  - apart from those whose main aim is to lie on a beach all day and party all night.  It's a quiet and beautiful place to explore the island from, and to have a few beers and watch the sun go down over the sea at the end of the day.

This hotel is in a wonderful location and was everthing we wanted from our island visit. Gabriel and his family do everything they can to make your stay 150%. If you're with your partner or friend(s), make sure you arrange dinner at the hotel for at least one night - we had a wonderful surprise when we did. The rooms are clean and the breakfast is excellent. I stupidly left my camera charger in the room and Gabriel was kind enough to send it on to Bolivia for me. We hired bikes to get around the island, which was very easy. The hotel is conveniently located right next to a dive school too.
TIP: Cold glass of wine, in the pool, watching the sunset

Room Tip: First room on the left on the top floor, awesome views of the ocean.

The family that owns and operates this hotel made the trip. The food, the service, the coffee was incredible! Gabriel actually road into town to find us micro brews……..just incredible customer service at every turn. If your looking for a peaceful, relaxing stay on the far end of the island this is the place. I cant wait to go back and bring the kids. Best traditional food we had anywhere in Columbia…..Bravo!

Five of us stayed here in January 2011. We are experienced travelers who all agreed this was far and away the best hotel experience we've ever had. Not only is the location perfect, but the beautiful family that operates the hotel provides a five star experience at a three star price.

The diving was fantastic, the rooms were clean, the authentic Columbian food was unforgettable, and the Cuban coffee & imported beers were over the top!

We will most definitely be back to visit our new friends and hosts, Gabriel and Marlee. Do not pass on a chance to experience this wonderful slice of paradise.

Room Tip: Ask about the native island stew
