I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

The building is really cool and the hotel is decorations are modern. The style is very different, but works. The location is great - just don't arrive too late - kind of scary at night.

The staff was rude and did not know how to deal with customers. They didn't know the first thing about hospitality or how to work at a hotel. By the end of the weekend I was actually surprised they were not better at dealing with problems - there were so many unhappy people. There was no manager on duty most of the time - I had to wait until 11 am Saturday monring to speak with her. She apparantly got stuck in traffic? I have never seen so many unhappy people asking to speak with a manager - perhaps that is why they are never there...

The AC did not work in our room or on our floor the entire weekend. Reading other reviews from at least a month ago, it appears this is an old problem. The staff told us that it was a new problem and that it was being worked on around the clock - obviously not true. We were told to open our windows - which we did, but we were on the 8th floor with two small children. There were no window guards to keep kids from falling out the windows and my kids were able to climb on the low window sill. We had to rearrange the furniture to avoid this. I hope that there isn't an accident because of this.

The satellite TV was out. The manager said it was because of a rainstorm... Again an old problem that has not been fixed.

The shower is just a shower - the fill for the tub didn't work, so we couldn't give the kids baths. The water pressue is also pretty low.

The parking is rediculous. It is first come first served, so we spent a bit of time waiting for someone to leave. There is only room for 50 cars at best which is probably less than half of the guest rooms. The lot in the back is not easily accessible and is not safe at all.

Breakfast was a joke. The bagels are not fresh and the toaster didn't work right. The juice was horrible. No cereal, fruit, etc.

There was no ironing board in the room.

One of the three elevators was not working when we arrived. Apparently someone got trapped. At the end of our stay it was operating, but it not right. It didn't stop on the floor that it was supposed to and got suck between floors with us in it.

When I called two weeks before arriving they said the pool would be open. When we arrived there was a sign that said it would be another week.

There is no sign outside for the hotel other than a cheap vinyl banner that is hung up where the sign should be. Many of the signs within the hotel are just printed on paper and hung up on the wall with thumb tacks.

In my opinion, it looks like someone renovated the hotel and ran out of money. If it were finished, the mechanical issues fixed and a new staff was hired and trained this could be a great hotel. Until then, the hotel should not be open.

We ended up getting the 1/3 off the rate, but it would not have been worth it if it were free!!!!

The Berkeley is an experience we will not forget or want to do again. The only good thing we can say is the room was tastefully decorated. Upon arrival, we found out immediately that the staff was undertrained and didn't know much about the hotel or their services. there was no specific valet service, they just pulled someone from the desk area who didn;t know the first thing about delivering the luggage to our room. Upon arrival to our room, there was no coffee pot, only two cups, no cups for bathroom use, only one bar of soap, had to go to three floors to find a working pop machine, brand new mattress, no mattress pad, room very warm, air conditioner not working nor did it work for the entire two nights we were there. Staff was very rude and commented " when it is fixed it will be fixed", was told to open our window which had no screen and we were on the 8th floor. They continually told us they were working on it but that was a lie. Also tv did not get more than two clear stations and five total. The continental breakfast was very meager, big hotel, one small tray of bagels and sweets, one toaste rthat did not funvtion correctly, one type of juice, and not very appealing. Parking is limited and axcess to the hotel is not available unless you walk a block and a half. One elevator was not functioning all the time and some were trapped momentarilly.

It is obvious that the Berkeley has just been rennovated because the rooms and lobby look really nice and have been furnished very well. HOWEVER, they should have spent some efforts and money on utlities and other items for comfort. The AC did not work and the weather was warm to hot so the rooms were not condusive to relaxing. We had a group there for a wedding and some went out and bought fans so they could be comfortable at night. The TV was really nice but forget watching anything. The sattelite/cable didn't work so you had a choice of about 5 channels which did not include any premium channels. It was an adventure though. The elevators did not work properly so it was an event to try and get too you room. The parking is inadequate and inconvenient. Some parking is located in front and to the sides on the street. We were told that on June 1, this would be a paid parking area. The Berkeley parking lot is located to the rear of the hotel but there is no rear exit to get to the lot so you have to exit via the front and walk around to the lot. So to get a parking sticker so you don't get towed takes two round trips. Because of all of the complaints members of our party were to be given a discount. However, when I requested the same, I was informed but the clerk that she didn't know anything about it and was not too keen on helping. After some additional efforts, a small discount was given. Because of all these problems, this hotel would have been too expensive for half the price. However, it is convenient to the beach and board walk area so that is a plus. My recommendation is don't waste your time and money.

I have never been to this hotel before and I will never come back. I stayed over for a friends wedding on May 9 and so many people left because of the heat...It was so hot in the guest rooms and the ballrooms...the ballrooms were very nice, but with NO AC, it clearly dident matter! It seems that the hotel and the location (Asbury Park) are trying hard to make a "come-back" but at the rate their going, I highly doubt it! Numerous guests including myself went to the front desk to ask for a General Manager, and the front desk girl said that he wasnt around!!! What kind of hotel is this? There was also no housekeeping or lounge! On a positive note, the front desk staff was very nice and tried very hard, and since their were tons of screaming unhappy people, I give them credit. I also was helped by a sales manager, she was very nice and helpful but there was no way that the staff could fix the problems like AC. Thank gosh there was someone around to help! My guest room had an ocean view, but it was blocked by a huge ugly building...lets just say that I have no hope for this place, nor would I ever come back!!! Good luck if you stay, BEWARE!

The Berkeley has alot of character & a great location in proximity to the boardwalk and beach, but those are the only positive things I can say about this hotel.

The air conditioning was the first problem. Upon arrival, our room was very warm. We were told that it takes about 12 hours for the air conditioning to circulate through the whole hotel and that it would be cool when returned that evening. The front desk staff also suggested that we "open a window." Needless to say, getting ready for our evening out was an unpleasant experience and I needed another shower after doing so! By the end of our two evening stay, we determined that they probably never turned the air on the entire time. It cooled down in the evening due to the drop in temperature outside, but by the time you woke up in the morning, it was steamy all over again. We were there for a wedding, which made for an uncomfortable experience during the event too. Other guests heard they don't turn on the air until June.

The second problem was that we found a small army of ants in our room. Our first evening we found only a few and didn't think much of it. The next day we found hundreds and we knew we could no longer stay in this room. When I called the front desk, the manager asked me "what do you want me to do about it." Not exactly the response I was looking for. Eventually, we were moved to another room. All this took place while I was trying to get ready for my friend's wedding and dealing with the sweltering heat in my room. We were so upset by the experience, we had considered leaving after the wedding to avoid having to stay another evening in the hotel.

Other things that were poor: A $9.95 charge to use WiFi for a 24 hour period. No restaurant or bar on site at the hotel. The continental breakfast was pretty pathetic too. Not a big fan of the half of glass door in the shower either. There are three elevators, but of course one of them was broken during our stay. The other two were slow and kind of scary!

This hotel has undergone a recent renovation, but it appears that it was done cheaply. The decor is ecclectic & cool, which I enjoyed, but it masks alot of problems that management obviously has yet to address or has no desire to rectify.

I would not recommend this hotel and would never return to the Berkeley.

stay away. this place has a weird deco look. was waiting for sinatra and the rat pack to knock on our door looking for beer and cigarettes. the first warning was a note at the front desk saying the tv reception is poor in the 'sleeping rooms" . when asked why there was a reception problem, the front desk representative said that no contractor wants to work on rewiring the hotel because the project is too big!.....what? i was pleased my car was still parked in the hotel rear parking lot...no tire slashes and all windows in place. NO AIRConditioning! front desk said they hoped it would be running soon (lie) but in the meantime, maintenance would help us open the window. small side windows were opened for sea air-- the middle window screwed shut--no screens in window. thankfully no seagulls flew into sleep with our family.
good place for partiers and revelers.

Entering the room we found several ants on the beds, floors and bathroom walls, when I mentioned this to the desk staff, they replied we'll notify house keeping. The television had poor reception if any at all, the water out of the faucets was dirty. The AC unit in our room was not working and unable to open the window, it was a very hot weekend at the shore. The elevators were not working properly.
