We had a King room with Ocean View at a fair price; approx $200/night on a Friday in the summer. We found the room nicely appointed after the recent re-model. Very comfortable bed and chairs in room with wide screen TV. Sure, the bathroom sink was tangent to the door; no big deal. I can understand issues with any modern retrofit on an older hotel. Overall, the hotel hallways and common area were pleasant. We had no problem with the friendly front desk or other staff. We took advantage of valet parking; $20/day on weekends- so worth it. I can't comment on continental breakfast, restaurant, bar, drinks,or pool because we were either out enjoying the convenient beach right across the street during the day or out on the Boardwalk (across street) at night (for a wonderful meal at Stella Marina). Stay here for the great location and all Asbury Park has to offer (fun, beach, boardwalk, Paramount Theater, Stone Pony and restaurants).

I'll be generous and start with the positives: the valet guys and the bell staff are excellent. Now for the rest:

1. The rooms are designed by an idiot. This is a BEACH hotel which does not supply towels, so the rooms need HOOKS or TOWEL RACKS so guests can dry towels and bathing suits.

2. There is no night manager on duty, so there is no one to stop the craziness when parties end or the bar lets out and the animals (ex-cons?) are - literally - yelling at each other in the valet area or banging on doors and talking/yelling on my hallway from 1-4am both nights I was there.

3. The pool bar does not open until 1pm.

4. The housekeeping staff is very nice and enthusiastic, but they are helpfully and cheerfully yelling down the hall to each other at 9pm after my kids are asleep.

5. The valet parking takes forever. Park on the street.

6. The bathrooms do not have vent fans.

7. The elevators are very slow and each car is very small, and only 2 of 3 were working during the three days we were there. So when the hotel is full and people are bringing beach gear and wedding clothes on luggage carts up and down to their rooms, the line for the elevators (or the wait on the 6th floor when trying to get the elevator down to the lobby) is very long.

8. Why have HD-capable flat-screen TVs with cable service if the reception is analog-only and the picture is terrible?

This hotel has so much potential. It needs serious management help and some investment.

Room Tip: Stay on the back side, away from the front door, where all the late-night crowd gathers to smoke and...

Im from NJ and have spent hundreds of nights at the Jersey Shore. I know what to expect from Asbury Park, I didn't know what to expect from The Berkley.

Front desk was very very very rude. But I can deal with that. The next thing I'm about to say should alarm people.

some rooms are connected to other rooms with a common door without a lock. That's right, Room 629 can freely open the connecting door into room 630. No dead bolt, no extra door.... NOTHING. I asked a couple other friends/family who stayed for a wedding and they had similar issues. I told this to the front desk and they said "we will have someone look into that".

Nice hotel in great location. Some say it is outdated, but think they have kept up with the hotel nicely. Room was comfortable and large. The staff was ultra friendly. The only downside was that the mattress was a bit lumpy. Overall, I would stay there again. Would highly recommend valet parking as street parking is free from midnight to 9 am. The police were outside at 9:05 am ticketing cars on a sunday morning. So unless you want to wake up before 9 am to buy more parking time, please valet.

Room Tip: Get the best price you can, there are no balconies, and you will never be in the room except to sle...

Looking for a pleasant stay at the Jersey shore? Do NOT book the Berkeley in Asbury Park. Management should check of definition of HOSPITALITY and realign its policies. When tried to book for night of relative's wedding, was told had to book 2 nights. That was NOT agreement couple had when reserved block of rooms for guests. Groom had to straighten this out for more than one family member/friend. Isn't it better PR to accommodate a couple having a reception there? Parking valet told us parking fee is waived for wedding guests. Desk clerk said he was wrong. Ice machine on our floor didn't work. Elevators are slow. Furniture in room had scratches in it. Reception ended at 11 p.m. But couldn't sleep--loud music and shouting heard outside 5th floor window until after 1:30 a.m.--no idea where it was coming from. In morning, asked at front desk for change of a $20 bill to leave maid a tip. Clerk said she couldn't do that--could get change in gift shop, but only if made a purchase.

PARK YOUR OWN CAR!!! THE VALETS ARE THIEVES!!! Went over the weekend for a concert at the Stone Pony. $218 for the room plus $20 for parking seemed a bit much, but I was forewarned and prepared. What I wasn't prepared for was the two cell phone car chargers and my cousins $90 sweater we had stupidly left in the car mysteriously disappearing. The valets parked the car and held our keys, you tell me what happened. Didn't realize until we were half way home and needed to charge our phones. WAY too late by then. Use the meter parking out front if you can. If you have a handicap sticker the meter is FREE. They don't tell you that.
This doesn't include the bug I found under my sheets at 4am. The room was nice enough but that doesn't make up for everything else. If possible do yourself a favor and stay at the Empress. If not possible, at least park your own car. If that fails...keep an eye on everything you own.

I recently stayed at the Berkeley with my family which included 2 small children. I was hesitant to make a reservation there given some previous negative reviews but was quite satisified with our stay. The staff was friendly and helpful. The valet parking was very convenient so we did not have to drive around looking for parking and well worth the $20 fee. The room was a great size and actually larger than a room I had recently stayed in at a Marriott. It easily accommodated a pack n play plus all of the other necessities when traveling to the beach with young children (tent, toys, stroller, etc). As noted the hotel is older so the bathroom is small and outdated. The water pressure was intermittent and the tub would not fill properly (a problem with bathing 2 toddlers). The tv was an old fashioned tube tv but it worked just fine. The room did have an iPod docking station that also charged our phones and allowed us to play music. The city view wasn't too bad...we overlooked the little pond. The pool was decent and staff quickly located and moved lounge chairs for us. The pool deck offered plenty of towels and had a tiki bar which was a nice addition. The beach is literally across the street and there are some eateries on the boardwalk plus a McCloone's restaurant. The restaurant offers outdoor seating but is a bit pricey for boardwalk venues. We actually were granted early check-in and late check-out which really made our stay outstanding so we could take advantage of beach time with our children. All in all, I would highly recommend this hotel even though it isn't your top of the line, fully updated venue. The conveniences offered by staying here (valet parking, close proximity to beach and restaurants, outdoor pool, on-site restaurant) and the wonderful staff outweigh the negatives.
