The word is out that the Boardwalk at Asbury Park is fun for beach goers and folks hungry for better than just average food. The place used to scare people away but now it is the new place for families to go. Lots and lots of families. Our latest visit we were shocked to find hour and a half waits at the restaurants that not long ago were empty. At least it was a beautiful summer night and we strolled around wondering if any of the smaller places would be worth a go.
On the theory that this simple "sit for a slice" restaurant might keep us from starving my wife and I went in and ordered a couple of house salads, a pizza and Veal Francaise.
Our dinner was served promptly even though every seat was taken. We both commented on how good everything tasted, the pizza was not greasy or too salty and had the crust you find in fine Italian bakery rolls. Not surprising as this store sells fresh made bread as its calling card.
The veal dish and the salads followed, again simply served but the flavor and freshness were remarkable for "a boardwalk place." A friendly woman was checking the tables to see that everybody was happy (a sign of a smart restaurant!) and we found she was related to the owners. We came away convinced the family wholesomeness of the place explained why we had such a great time.
The chef was even taking a look to see how the crowd liked everything. I doubt you will be disappointed unless you were expecting fancy dining. BYOB if you like wine. Go.
