“Great stay in center of Medellin.”
Reviewed August 15, 2012

First off this is not for the person who wants to enjoy the hotel. It is ideal for someone who wants to get to know Medellin, be in the center of the city, and be walking distance to a lot of nightlife and shopping. I enjoyed my stay, the hotel is a little old but so is the neighborhood. The reason i stayed here is because the bus to the airport picks up right behind the hotel, which saved me about 40 dollars instead of taking a taxi and was very convenient. The hotel staff was friendly the bellman Gonzalo became my best friend afteR I gave home a three dollar tip and recommended one of the best restaurants I've eaten at anywhere called hatoviejo which is walking distance in the city. The hotel is across the street from a tourist info booth which was very helpful in giving me directions provided me with a free map and is two blocks away from the train which goes everywhere. The turibus which is a 4 hour guided tour of the city picks up right outside the hotel at 9am and 1pm and costs 11 usd. Very nice. So to sum up if you want to stay in a resort it looks like the poblado area is a safe bet. If you want to be in the city and feel the liveliness of the city and don't mind a run down hotel then hotel nutibara is not a bad choice.

We arrived (a group of 30) at the hotel at 9:00PM to live our worst nightmare. The area is located is filthy, they had a guard that would keep the beggars away by hitting them with a stick. Staff was not polite, did not want to provide the food service included, when food was finally given to us in a plastic container . When we opened the container we had rice, with an awful meat on top and a jello dessert on top of the meat. We requested the manager appearance, which never arrived during the two day stay. Rooms were ugly, old, and not well cleaned. We complained at the front desk and they just did not care to provide any apology. I do not recommend this hotel to anyone, and I am speaking for the group of 30, unless you may want to stay in the worst nightmare.

Room Tip: Do not stay at this hotel.

We expected much more from the superior suite in this hotel. I would say it was like 2star hotel.
Renovated probably 30 years ago. You should wait for 10 minutes for water to become warm. Then the water from the floor in the shower will go away only after 1 hour. Then room services took away our half-empty water bottles. Then they took away our old towels and did not put new ones.
Noise from the street was very loud, even we were on the 10th floor.
Breakfast was absolutely terrible, we even did not went then on the second day at all.
Yes, the hotel is located in the middle of center of a town, but it is very dirty and unsafe neighborhood.

Room Tip: higher floor

On weekends, there are discos within a block of hotel that go on until 2 am. Hotel does not have double glazed windows so you hear the noise as well as cars, trucks and buses (which you hear during the week as well). Very inefficient front desk. No computer for guest use (although we were told it would be repaired soon). Very pleasant if ineffective hotel staff. Little English spoken. Rooms were relatively clean. First room we had was very clean. When we had to move due to noise from music, that room was not as clean (in closet were spider cocoons). Beds comfortable with comfortable pillows. hotel has safe in room. Not enough light in room. could use higher wattage bulbs in lamps. No restaurant except for breakfast. We did not have breakfast since had to leave early for airport.
Convenient location for airport bus (around corner from hotel). We stayed here because there was an outdoor pool, and we thought it would be nice to swim for a day before going home (our plane was early in morning). However, the pool area is very uninviting and very dirty (our feet were black from walking on the deck). The pool water is freezing - about 75 degrees F. or less. There are no umbrellas for the lounge chairs, only for the chairs at the tables. Lounge chairs hard plastic with no cushions. You look out at dirty grimy buildings with broken windows. Would not stay here again. Would stay in El Poblado at hotel with pool if wanted to swim and take taxi down to airport bus.

Room Tip: On weekends stay on back side of hotel away from music.

Definitely special and from a by-gone age. If you like these kind of places, the Nutibara's not be missed if you are touring downtown Medellin. Impossible to not be struck by the high-style of the place, from the Deco entrance and portico to the original fittings in the lobby: the Hotel really stands out in this neighborhood littered with '60s and 70s style monstrosities, like the Nutibara's annex hotel across the street. Facility has big dining area, outdooor terrace restaurant, pool, and functionable gym. Building is big and rambling. Rooms are spacious, stayed in one with a huge balcony, while furnishings and bed are old. Antiquated windows let the street noise right in. Little has been modernized and the elevator can be dodgy. There is not a viable alternative in this immediate neighborhood. Bus to and from airport departs a short walk distance on street behind the Nutibara. Wifi in lobby only. If too expensive for you, try their annex Hotel, many of the facilities are shared.

Room Tip: See as many as you can, especially the suites.

We stayed 2 weekend nights in this classic hotel in center Medellin. Nutibara is apparently the oldest hotel in Medellin when it started out as a 5 star venue for the upper class. Entering the hotel feels somehow like traveling back in time. The faded elegance of the huge reception lobby, the always helpful and smiling staff dressed up in true piccolo suits, the dated interior: there should be no more authentic way to lodge in Medellin. The rooms are big with good beds only the bathroom could need an upgrade. All in all great value for money and we were definitely happy to have chosen this classic hotel over a place in the disneyworld thank god it's Friday like El Poblado.

A first glance at the Hotel Nutibara brings forth images of faded glory. It features an art deco exterior that is badly in need of a good sandblast, a lobby that was probably posh in the 1940's and dated rooms that try oh so hard to exude a sense of elegance, yet fall well short of the mark. The Hotel Nutibara is the kind of place you would suspect attracted those of means and leisure in some long ago hay day. Alas, that is not true today as most of the clientele appear to be solidly middle class.

The fickle ones who are always "in the know" and desire to spend wads of cash on a place where they will be unconscious the majority of the time, have long sense migrated to El Poblado for a more pasteurized experience of Medellin. True, there are nice places to spend money in Poblado. However, most of the interesting and vibrant things (significant museums, sights, and activities) are close to Nutibara. An added plus for culture hounds is that the heartbeat of a large Latin American city envelops the hotel such that you cannot help but be immersed in it and feel its rhythm as well as smell its smells. Bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper.

The staff was extremely nice and went out of their way to be helpful. Everything worked as promised. The rooms were clean, comfortable and well maintained; although lacking the poshness of the chain places that equate their mattresses with the afterlife.

This is NOT a hotel for people who demand 4-5 star quality wherever they go. This is NOT a hotel for people who will not go anywhere without a driver. This is NOT the hotel for people who care for nothing but shopping, drinking and disco. If you are flexible, economical, into the arts and culture and enjoy some of those intangibles that make an experience what it is, this is the place for you.

True, it’s not perfect. Age, changing sensibilities, fickleness of markets and the gravity of old age count against this hotel. However, effort, the staff and the location, more than make up for its flaws. I would stay here again in a New York minute...and probably will.
