“Classic stay in Nutibara”
Reviewed April 3, 2011

We stayed 2 weekend nights in this classic hotel in center Medellin. Nutibara is apparently the oldest hotel in Medellin when it started out as a 5 star venue for the upper class. Entering the hotel feels somehow like traveling back in time. The faded elegance of the huge reception lobby, the always helpful and smiling staff dressed up in true piccolo suits, the dated interior: there should be no more authentic way to lodge in Medellin. The rooms are big with good beds only the bathroom could need an upgrade. All in all great value for money and we were definitely happy to have chosen this classic hotel over a place in the disneyworld thank god it's Friday like El Poblado.

A first glance at the Hotel Nutibara brings forth images of faded glory. It features an art deco exterior that is badly in need of a good sandblast, a lobby that was probably posh in the 1940's and dated rooms that try oh so hard to exude a sense of elegance, yet fall well short of the mark. The Hotel Nutibara is the kind of place you would suspect attracted those of means and leisure in some long ago hay day. Alas, that is not true today as most of the clientele appear to be solidly middle class.

The fickle ones who are always "in the know" and desire to spend wads of cash on a place where they will be unconscious the majority of the time, have long sense migrated to El Poblado for a more pasteurized experience of Medellin. True, there are nice places to spend money in Poblado. However, most of the interesting and vibrant things (significant museums, sights, and activities) are close to Nutibara. An added plus for culture hounds is that the heartbeat of a large Latin American city envelops the hotel such that you cannot help but be immersed in it and feel its rhythm as well as smell its smells. Bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper.

The staff was extremely nice and went out of their way to be helpful. Everything worked as promised. The rooms were clean, comfortable and well maintained; although lacking the poshness of the chain places that equate their mattresses with the afterlife.

This is NOT a hotel for people who demand 4-5 star quality wherever they go. This is NOT a hotel for people who will not go anywhere without a driver. This is NOT the hotel for people who care for nothing but shopping, drinking and disco. If you are flexible, economical, into the arts and culture and enjoy some of those intangibles that make an experience what it is, this is the place for you.

True, it’s not perfect. Age, changing sensibilities, fickleness of markets and the gravity of old age count against this hotel. However, effort, the staff and the location, more than make up for its flaws. I would stay here again in a New York minute...and probably will.

I am currently living in Miami, but Medellin is my home town, it is where my family is from and where I went to college. My family lives one hour away from Medellin and I had some business to attend to in the city so I decided to stay at the Hotel Nutibara since it is strategically located in down town Medellin. This is where the new Botero City is located and where there is a great deal of touristy places to visit like the botanical gardens, the Antioquia Museum, the Metropolitan Cathedral, and of course the turist turibus which comes directly to the Hotel Nutibara. It had been a while since I went to down town, and since I am living out of the country I wanted to take this opportunity to see all of these places which were renovated and/or up-graded since I was last there. I also knew that the flower festival was actually happening right near the hotel. Colombia is famous for its beautiful tropical flowers and exports a significant number.
In any case, I wanted to tell you how wonderful my stay was at the hotel, the rooms were very ample, the service was excellent and it was very clean and neat. It does need a little bit of remodeling, but the people and the service makes up for it. I had to meet with my business partners and the hotel immediately provided a conference room for a very reasonable price, since I did not want to meet with them in the lobby. I was late in ordering room service one day and they opened the cafeteria just for me, I had just lost track of time, It was late and I was very hungry. Medellin has changed a great deal and lots of new restaurants and night clubs have opened, the Hotel Nutibara knew exactly what restaurants and places to recommend. All in all, it was a wonderful week.

I was pretty disappointed with this hotel. We paid about 120 dollars for a night here, which for Colombian standards is quite high.
The rooms were very outdated, walls were dirty, bathroom was like something out of a 1920's tenement building. The shower door was completely rusted.

The swimming pool was to be one of the pluses at this hotel, but in order to get to it you have to pass through a checkpoint where they make you go through a shower, and you can't even bring in a book, cover-up, etc because you have to pass through the shower with all your stuff, even if you aren't planning to go in the pool, but just want to lay in a chair. It was pretty silly.
Location couldn't be better, it is right in front of the Parque Botero. But aside from location, not a great find.

We stayed at this Hotel twice, 3 weeks apart. Our first trip in we discovered that the hotel did not have airport shuttle as Expedia had described, since we had booked though Expedia I blame that on them. 25 Dollars from the International Airport, but it is almost an hour ride. Apart from that, the front desk and the concierge/staff outside was very hospitable and friendly. We were given a room on the 10th floor, room 1010. This is the room to ask for. It has a huge outside private balcony with amazing views over the city, especially at night. The room was huge, wood floors with large windows. It had all the amenities, soap, hairdryer, shampoo, minibar, it even had things like a toothbrush, toothpaste, for sale , and well if you forgot yours and can't go to bed without washing then you can appreciate the nice touch. Yes, at night its not recommended to go around walking, but during the day it is right across from the Museum, and the metro line was available too. During the day we walked around and felt safe. Just take care like you would in any big city, such as New York City. A taxi to the 'nicer neighborhood' , the city's Zona Rosa, El Poblado, is going to cost between 7.000 & 8.000 thousand pesos. ( US $3.50-&4.00) The taxis go by meter.
Our room was aged, yes, but it had character. The room we stayed in the second time around was on the same floor ( previous one was under renovation) but we were given one on the other side number 1002 that had an even larger rooftop balcony with a table and chairs outside. It was fantastic for our last night in Medellin. You can watch lighting showers outside, or wake up to the sunrise and photograph the city waking up. For the price, it is a nice little hotel. Since we had the top floor, we slept like babies and didn't hear any street noise at all. The steam room/spa area was decent, walked into the steam room someone laying on the floor-kinda made you not want to go in.
We had also left a cell phone charger in the room on the first night we stayed here and assumed it for lost. Upon our return, we contacted the lost and found department of the hotel to discover that they had indeed located our charger and were holding it for us safe and sound. That was very nice. We'd return to this hotel.
As an afterthought, the breakfast is weak yes, but walk out of the hotel, turn left and go up the street make a right, there is a place called Los Comilones II, they had complete breakfast with eggs and steak and rice and beans w/coffee for 7.000(US $3.50) so you can eat there!

Upon arriving at the hotel, one of my 3 suitcases was stolen while I waited for the door guard to unlock the door to the lobby. Hotel security cameras showed me entering the hotel with only 2 suitcases, but the cameras did not show what happened on the hotel porch. I strongly suspected the door guard, in conjunction with a buddy. I subsequently found out the door guard had only been working at the hotel for 2 days. I met with the chief of security and offered to pay for a lie detector for the guard. The guard became very nervous and refused. The police did an investigation, but nothing could be proved.

I stayed at the hotel 2 nights. The hotel has character, not a sterile feel, but is a bit rundown. The rooms are nice, but noisy, due to street traffic and music and doors in the dividing walls between rooms. The bed matresses are hard as a rock. The hotel restaurant's was expensive but lousy.

wow i came back to my hometown of medellin, and stayed at this old hotel.

Hotel nutibara used to be one of the best hotels in the city.

if im not mistaken the hotel almost went bankrupt some years ago, but the staff make a deal with the owners to keep it running.

Wow i never experienced such a good service even in a 5 star hotel, the staff were just amazing, asking what i needed, being helpulf not to mention the great breakfast they had.

The room was very basic yes, but good enough with a nice view to the "museo de antioquia"

the hotel has a pool too, and sauna.

i would definely recomend this place if u want to see the real medellin.
