“Brilliant place to stay in Medellin”
Reviewed August 8, 2013

I had the pleasure of staying at International House for 6 months, from July 2012 to Jan 2013. Before I arrived in Medellin I was looking for long term shared accommodation with modern amenities, apartment living, good atmosphere and in a good location. There is very little in Medellin that delivers that from what I could find. International House was exactly what I was looking for.

The apartments are modern, full furnished and clean. They have everything that one would need to live comfortably. The building is right next to a sports complex, which apart from the swimming pools, for which you can gain access to for a nominal amount, is free to use. I used the swimming pool every day. Location wise, the building is in a safe residential area with easy access to all public transport and attractions in Medellin. When I was there people tended to stay long term and it gave it a nice homely feel where you meet and live with awesome people from all over the world.

When I lived there, there were 5 fully furnished individual bedrooms per apartment but I know that Joel, the owner, has since made some changes to accommodate more beds in some rooms. There are two types of rooms: rooms with a view of the sports complex and the park and rooms with no views. The rooms with a view had natural light but there is some street and traffic noise. The rooms with no view didn’t have the natural light but were quieter. I had a room with a view and while there was street and traffic noise, I got used to it. Having the natural light and view made a huge difference but it is obviously subjective.

Joel, the owner, is a really great guy and makes sure everyone feels welcome and all apartment needs are met. He also regularly organizes barbeques and drinks for everyone up on the roof top terrace of the building, which are great fun and allows everyone to get to know each other. The roof terrace is probably one of the best features of the building. It is a great place to work, study, relax or party and has awesome 360 degree views of the city and surrounding hills.

I cannot fault International House. I had a fantastic time there and a fantastic time in Medellin. I will definitely be coming back to Medellin and will be staying at International House when I do. I highly recommend it!

I'm currently staying at International House and I absolutely love it. It's the perfect mix between apartment building and hostel- some people are staying long-term and there are some people who only pass through for a couple of nights. Each bedroom is really large and includes a double bed, tv, closet, desk and fan. Each apartment has its own fully equipped kitchen, living room, dining area and balcony. And wait til you see the rooftop terrace! It's so nice! There are really great views of all of Medellin as well as a big screen tv, outdoor kitchen, lounge area and on-site washer and dryer. We have plenty of potlucks and movie nights up there! During the day you can always find people hanging out or working up there too. On the first floor is a restaurant owned by the same landlord (Joel). The food is really good, cheap and the people working there are really kind. It's a great place to watch football matches! Across the street is La Unidad Deportiva, a free rec center to play sports, workout or lay by the pool. This place has everything! I can't recommend it enough.

I'm halfway through a planned one month stay at international house medellin. It's been great so far! it's hard to describe the atmosphere, I'd say it's a magical and natural/ spontaneous interaction between people from all over the world, who have somehow discovered this amazing building that fosters community without trying. It's really comfortable, cozy, intimate, and spacious all at the same time.

Last night the American owner Joel, hosted a Colombian slang Spanish class followed by a sit-down dinner (all gratis) for all the guests/residents of Int'l House in the fully operational restaurant on the first floor. The guests/residents are a mix of short-termers, long-termers (in colombia studying spanish, volunteering, just traveling, or working online...there is fast and stable Wifi on every floor) and couchsurfers, and this mix creates muy buena onda (good energy) in the building.

Although the building has some dorm rooms, the atmosphere is not like a hostel....feels more like renting a big house with friends. The vibe is very social, but instead of frequent parties, there are potluck dinners (you can invite as many people as you want), rooftop get togethers, and frequent small dinners, as each of the three floors has it's own kitchen. Don't think I need to add that I highly recommend it!

Where to begin? I stayed at the Intl House Medellin for over 2 months and found it to be a great place to meet people from all over the world. It's a great mix between a hostel and apartments with options for both. Joel (the owner) just opened a restaurant on the first floor and will soon open a BBQ next to that. The terrace is a terrific place to hang out with a big screen tv, speakers to plugin to your laptop, a full kitchen if you want to cook and comfortable sitting areas (sleeping for some!) I stayed in one of the private rooms which had a very comfortable bed, cable TV, closet space, fan, big desk. Each floor has a well equipped kitchen, sitting area and balcony. This place has it all for a great monthly price. If you need anything to make your stay more comfortable Joel is on it, not to mention a fun guy to hang out with along with everyone else. As for location it's outside of the touristy/nightlife area of Poblado (10 min cab ride), but that makes it quieter and a better value. There is a great park next door with swimming, weights, basketball, volleyball, soccer, etc. I think I about covered it all. If you're in Medellin stay here, you won't regret it! .. and you'll meet great people.

Room Tip: The private rooms are always full.. you'll want to book ahead or reserve a spot!

I stayed at International House for 2 and a half years.

The rooftop is the highlight with incredible views, a steam room and a bathtub. A great place for rooftop parties and potluck dinners. I should say though that this is not every night. It´s generally a good place to relax and get things done. I worked as an English teacher for most of the time I was there and it was rarely a problem going to bed early for 6am classes. There is a swimming pool and sporting facility over the road. The small pool is practically empty during the week between about 11am and 4pm.

The place is cleaned throughly twice a week which goes a long way towards reducing any tension about that kind of thing I´d experienced in other shared houses. Of course you have to wask your dishes.

My room was spacious, with shelves, a tv with cable, a fan, a big desk, and a big comfortable bed. I left a nice pair of wooden speakers there too actually for future guests so you might get lucky.

The other guests are usually a mix of short and long termers. They are usually either learning Spanish, teaching English or just travelling around. We also had a few bloggers and reporters and people working in tourism. English speakers are more common but Spanish speakers do stay there. Of course, Spanish speakers staying there may of course be living in an "International House" to practise English. Having said that, there is usually a good mix of nationalities and some opportunity to practise Spanish. I got the impression that Joel, the landlord, would go some way towards vetting the guests so that there was almost no issues with difficult guests in all the time I was there.

I was able to try one meal from the newly opened restaurant downstairs before I left and it was excellent.

Having stayed for so long, I couldn´t give it less than a 5, could I?

Room Tip: Rooms on the street are noisier in the day but can be incredibly cool and peaceful at night. Higher...

I first arrived here last year. I didn't know anybody in Medellín, but I arrived in a very cool place. The owner of the building is a kind, easygoing guy and the building is nice too. The rooms are cosy as the common areas in each apartment. The building is located in a very good spot. You can find supermarkets, bars, gyms. You have a metro station nearby and also a lot of buses. The rooftop offers you a pretty cool view of the city, and a place to relax among friends. The building counts with dryer and washing machine, so you could save a couple of bucks in laundry. Also in the first floor you can find a really really good restaurant that offers you breakfasts and lunches with typical Colombian seasoning. Also you have the opportunity to know all kind of people, from around the world. Ultimately for me, is a home away from home, and I can assure that your stay and vacations are going to be unforgettable.
