Description: Our history dates more than 30 years ago, when Hatoviejo was established in front of the 5 star Intercontinental Hotel. We wanted to provide the city with a cozy atmosphere, full with paisa culture and offer guests the best of Colombia's traditional food and cuisine (Bandeja Paisa, Ajiaco, Sancocho, Mondongo, Sudado, etc.), Complemented with other international dishes: barbecues / grills. Short after, Medellin demanded more locations to please the downtown business executives and families. 10 Years later, in the Oviedo shopping mall another location was opened. Today, all three continue in service and offer a wider menu including salads, soups, cazuelas, colombian desserts and a wide selection of wines. During this time, Hatoviejo has been a reference in the sector for its delicious food, excellent service and comfortable spaces that evoke the most traditional Colombian architecture and the paisa culture. Today, Hatoviejo is recognized as one of the top restaurants in Medellin and Colombia. Throughout the years that Hatoviejo has welcomed locals and tourists, it has received important prizes and recognitions like "Best Restaurant in Antioquia" by La Barra magazine in 2011 and the Rosa De Los Vientos prize, granted by the Colombian Tourism Journalist Association.

This is a nice place to go and spend an afternoon - not as cheap as other places but nice, old and traditional Medellin food.. The food quality is very good - the service likewise. The building reminds of an old house with lots of flowers everywhere.

We went to this restaurant on recommendation from several people and guidebooks when we were in town for a few days and wanted some good local food. However, our experience was just ok. Some of the food (tongue) was great, but the rest of average (liver was overcooked). The best part was probably the unlimited avocado dip. We also didn't notice anyone dressed up in traditional attire. There were a lot of waiters serving us, but all were just wearing suits.

The space itself is nice and the atmosphere definitely feels high end. The bathrooms are nice as well. But we came for the food and thought it was just ok.

Hato Viejo is a great place to soak in the cowboy spirit that characterizes the people of Antioquia. Waiters dressed in typical 18th-century paisa attire provide attentive service and will be glad to share their version of the history of Colombia if you ask. (Just make sure you have a couple of free hours.) A typical Spanish courtyard and dozens of hanging flowers give the restaurant an intimate, elegant feel despite its 250-person capacity. For a crash-course introduction to the paisa diet, try the Plato Montanero, a typical Antioquian dish featuring ground beef, rice, avocado, chicharrón, sausage, egg, salad, beans, and fried plátano. Unless you're ravenous, ask for the media porción (half portion). For more privacy, ask for a table on one of the many balconies overlooking El Poblado.

I will always have a soft spot for this restaurant as it was my first taste at Colombian food back in 1989. The restaurant is located at walking distance from the Intercontinental hotel which is always a bit of a sign that the food will be somewhat adjusted to suit everyone's taste buds. However in the case of Hatoviejo, they haven't done too much adjusting and you do feel, through the wonderful typical set up, service, friendliness that you are experiencing the real stuff when it comes to colombian style hospitality. I recommend the Ajiaco (chicken broth) and if you wish to go for something more hardy, how about the Bandeja Paisa, although the real version of this dish is normally a lot larger than what they serve at Hatoviejo - it is a good thing too or else the customers would be sitting in the restaurant for hours if they were going to try to plough through an original full portion of Bandeja Paisa!
I went back again to Hatoviejo in 2012 and I can say that they have kept up the overall standards of this restaurant. I am certainly looking forward to go again next time that I am in Medellin!
