Some of these reviews made me a bit nervous about Casa Veranera but I am so glad that I went anyway. My husband and I stayed there for three nights and it was just fantastic. We were the only people there so we were upgraded to the suite, which is spacious and lovely (although the past review that says there is no a/c in the main room is correct, but that really isn't too big of an issue). My biggest complaint about the rooms are that the beds aren't super comfortable (not Westin Heavenly Bed, but that's to be expected outside of the chain hotels) and that I like to sleep in the dark and they get a lot of light. Just bring an eye mask if you want the dark as well.
The staff are fantastic and went above and beyond with hospitality, and breakfast really was something special. They also had no problem accommodating me as a vegetarian. Mango and other fresh fruit, bread and butter and jam, coffee and tea, fruit juice, arepas, delicious fried cheese...I could go on. I travel a LOT (about 6 international trips a year) and did not think that the staff made mistakes. I will say that some Spanish is very helpful, but that could be said about the whole Cartagena experience and everyone is very patient with people who are still at the "practicing" level.
The location is very safe, centrally located, and fairly quiet, although you definitely still get some "life in the city" sounds but not much road noise, any club music, etc.
I especially recommend this hotel for couples seeking a romantic retreat or larger groups who would like to book the entire place. My husband and I definitely are daydreaming about coming back and bringing our whole family here!
