“5 star staff, great position, but something missing”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 31, 2014 via mobile

If we were rating in particular the receptionist and morning and evening waitress (does she ever get time off?) as well as the other staff it would definitely be a five star rating.
Why did it lose a star?
Certainly not from the superb position or the fun Toucans. The rooms are a bit dark and the bathrooms very small and the pool microscopic, though very welcome in the heat, despite stubbing my toes on wall behind the poorly anchored steps.
We had one of the glass floored rooms, which were certainly different and interesting, but the hanging space was limited and the water temperature in the shower tepid at best
That said, the staff are so friendly and helpful and the position is first class, the bed was supremely comfortable, so on a future visit we would probably return

We having been going to Cartagena for the last forty -three years yet our last trip was sixteen years ago. Cartagena has improved so much and is one of the most exciting cities imaginable. It has culture, history, beaches, fantastic restaurants, and a great night life.
The choice for Bantu was based upon the location in the old inner city, the attractive pictures and the size. Our arrival was most promising since the young lady at the desk welcome us with the most beautiful smile and from there it just got better and better. My husband told them we were celebrating my sixty-ninth birthday. On the night of my birthday the staff brought me a chocolate birthday cake and sang Happy Birthday to me.
The young ladies at the desk were incredible, the hotel staff warm and helpful. We love this hotel. We got stuck because of JFK being closed due to a snow storm and were allowed to stay to extra days. Yes the pool is small but it is enough to cool you off. The breakfast is wonderful. The two Toucans in the lobby add character and please try to swing in the court yard.

Room Tip: If you want a very romantic room try the one in the courtyard with the lights in the floor.

We stayed here for three nights and enjoyed the hotel. It is well located for walking throughout Cartagena and has good restaurants on the nearest square and excellent ones one square over on plaza San Diego.

We had a lovely room and the staff was terrific. Always helpful and smiling. Our only negative comments would be that the breakfast is very minimal and the pool is barely big enough for a dip.

Had high expectations for the Hotel Bantu. Formerly two colonial houses, it looked promising when we checked in. The lobby was attractive and the location, in the old city near San Fernando de Madrid Plaza, was fabulous.

The interior courtyards are lovely. The three toucans are entertaining and fun to interact with. We stayed in room 204 on the second floor. The room had two large and comfortable beds. While the room was spacious and tastefully decorated it was very dark. The bathroom, on the other hand, was very small with inadequate storage space. When I attempted to adjust the shade for the bathroom light, I received a pretty good shock. Both the hot and cold faucets deliver cold water.

The biggest issue with the room was the noise and vibration from an air conditioner compressor. The compressor must not have been properly mounted. The vibration and noise permeated the room making it difficult to sleep. The staff was willing to move us, but there were no other rooms available.

The pool was under repair when we were there, so I can't comment on it. Breakfast was fair. Nothing exciting. Featured very few of the fabulous fruits that Columbia has to offer.

There was nothing significantly wrong with the hotel (with the exception of the air conditioner compressor). There just wasn't enough good to justify the price.

Room Tip: Turn the air conditioner on before you accept the room to insure that it's quiet.

delightful hotel within walking distance of just about everything you'll want to experience in Cartagena: my room -- on first floor -- large, comfortable, clean queen bed and walk-in shower. pleasant sitting area with couches and two apple computers -- I stayed three nights and computers worked almost all the time... toucans fly/hop about: friendly, but will nip with annoyed long enough!!! staff laid back and helpful: included breakfast -- ask for their made to order omelettes...

Room Tip: no elevator; if you need a downstairs room -- request in advance...

Oh, where to begin. The hotel is really very pretty and in a good location, but------the room was so musty I could hardly breathe, the shower overflowed, the supposed wireless connection didn't work in the lobby nor my room, the room was extremely dark and one of the toucans bit me, Other than that, everything was perfect.

This hotel has a number of desirable attributes – great location (everything within the historic district of Cartagena is within walking distance); two elegant and tastefully furnished interior courtyards; and a rooftop pool/solarium/spa (the pool is only some 15 feet long, but in Cartagena’s torrid climate any such amenity is welcome). The personnel were hospitable and helpful. On the night I stayed there, however, I had to deal with a number of annoying problems. The air conditioning in the room I was initially assigned didn’t work, which necessitated a switch to a slightly smaller room. In the new room the air conditioning worked fine, but the shower faucets (which were evidently mislabeled) both yielded lukewarm water at roughly equal temperature. Moreover, Internet access was dodgy the entire time I was there. The breakfast buffet was adequate but nothing special – and this in a country with an abundance of all kinds of tropical fruits. Overall I found the hotel to be overpriced relative to the quality of service provided.
