“Excellent location with helpful staff”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 6, 2014

This hotel has an excellent location, being in the middle of everything. It is right next to the cathedral and within walking distance to all the attractions in the old city. I had a room facing the street yet it was not too noisy.

The staff was helpful and allowed me early check-in, something which I really appreciate. The room was nicely air-conditioned, something I value in the Cartagena heat. There is also a ceiling fan in case you do not want air-con. Wifi is available in the room and reliable.

My only complaint is that the main door to the hotel is locked at night and you have to ring the bell to be let in.

Nevertheless, I would still recommend this hotel to everyone.

I went to Cartagena with 2 friends for 6 days. We wanted central location without paying a huge amount for a room. This place was just perfect! The location is amazing, close to everything! We ate quite a few times at the restaurant downstairs, very good value for money. The room was spacious and clean, and although the area is busy we had a good sleep. The guy at the front desk was very helpful, and the girl that served breakfast was lovely. If you are not looking for luxury, but great location at a good price, I'd definitely recommend Centro hotel.

This hotel is the best value in the old city. The rooms are nicely air conditioned in the Cartagena heat. There are restaurants and bars within a stones throw, there is even a very good restaurant on the ground floor. The location is strategic, almost the heart of the old city. Staff are friendly and efficient. A splendid choice.

Room Tip: Book in advance, it gets very busy and is popular

We stayed one night here at the end of two weeks in Colombia. It is well located, but as other reviewers noted, anything in the walled city is going to be very convenient -- and there are dozens if not hundreds of hotels within the walled city. This is on one of the louder streets. Fortunately we were able to switch rooms. The street-side rooms are larger but have balconies that open onto the street and the glass door doesn't continue all the way down to make contact with the tile floor, meaning that any sound coming in just echoes. All manner of people in the streets, and horseshoes on the cobblestones, late into the night. We switched to an interior room and it didn't have any windows, but it did have A/C so we found it to be just the way we liked it -- cool and very dark. The bed was one of the most comfortable we found in Colombia and the sheets were high quality, though well used.

To clarify a point of contention among other reviewers, the hotel does have hot water. It is actually hard to find a hotel with hot water anywhere along the Colombian cost (save for luxury hotels). This one has heating showerheads and you have to adjust the while the water is OFF. If the temperature isn't right, turn it off and try again. This isn't the Sofitel but we did enjoy having a hot shower the night before our long flight home.

The breakfast was wonderful. Fresh fruit, toast, eggs, juice, coffee. Smallish portions but it was just enough to feel satisfied, and everything was delicious.

We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. They speak a bit of English but not much. This hotel is on the second floor with no elevator, but they will help you carry your bags upstairs. There is a restaurant downstairs but it was closed by 8 p.m. (on Tuesday -- maybe later on weekends) so wasn't loud at night. You'll eat your breakfast in an open air courtyard with gorgeous, lush green plants around you.

Centro costs more than what you would pay for a comparable hotel most places in the United States, except maybe New York City, but it's just an inescapable truth that hotels within the walled city of Cartagena are wickedly expensive. We felt this was a good value for the price, compared to other places we stayed or considered staying.

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper, ask for a room that doesn't face the street. It won't have any w...

The hotel is very centrally located in the Old Town, and the price is very reasonable, particularly considering the nice environment and more than comfortable rooms. Tips: bring your own shampoo, and if possible ask for a room away from the main street (or bring good ear plugs...).

If you stay in Cartagena, few hotels match the location of Centro Hotel. It´s at a stone throw of most of the Old cities attractions, like the Cathedral, the Clock Tower and the Plaza Santo Domingo. The rooms were a bit spartan, yet clean. There are however, a few things that we were not very happy about: 1. The guy who worked at the night shift was not particularly friendly. One night we arrived to our room and we noticed that the door key had been left hanging at the door lock (we left them at reception when we left the room). We complained to the guy, and his sole response was that it was not his responsibility but from the staff from the previous shift.

Room Tip: I did not find the street front windows that noisy, and the street view from the balcony was great.

This is a bare bones hotel and I expected more for the amount I paid per night. It was clean and I didn't have any issues with bugs but I would not stay here again for the price. I'd spend a bit more for something nicer. Breakfast included a fruit plate, orange juice, scrambled (or fried) eggs, toast and coffee. It was fine but not spectacular and also isn't as much food as it sounds like. Also, the website we made our reservation through said minimum eggs and bacon but we never saw any bacon (not that we minded).

One of the big brand guide books noted that this small hotel is built around a courtyard. What it didn't mention is that in the courtyard is a casual restaurant and you can hear people talking and the clinking of the silverware into the night. Also, if you get a room that looks onto the street then you will hear street noise and also the noise of horse drawn carriages until 1am.
The location is great but I think anything in the old city would be in a great location. The old city is quite small and easily walkable. Although this hotel is located in El Centro, it is about a 5 minute walk (or less) to the part of the old city known as San Diego.

Lastly, a safety measure of the hotel is that you have to ring a doorbell and someone will come down the stairs and let you into the door. This results in one being able to hear the doorbell into the night or until the final guest arrives back to the hotel. On the one hand, you feel safer but it is yet another reason to bring ear plugs.
