“Nice clean hotel on the peninsula...”
Reviewed December 28, 2013

A friend and I staid a few days ago at this hotel. We each got a double room at a reasonable rate. On top of it we were in good company as locations go, located right across from the Hilton.

We came in from Bogotá, which was rather on the chilly side in days ahead, so we were looking forward to some sun, the beach and to see the sensational old town of Cartagena.

The staff was professional und friendly on check-in and once we saw our rooms in realtime, we felt we had made a great choice: roomy, flatscreenTV, wireless access, and a window with a view, not the greatest, but still a view on to the lagoon on the backside of the hotel.

The Breakfast buffet was simple, jet it provided all one needed. Great Juices, fresh fruit, coffee, even scrambled eggs…

Your at the end of the strip extending out into the ocean , mostly I believe landfill, but is felt a world apart. If you felt like seeing the colonial part of town than it was just a short cab ride away. The normal fare was about 6 to 8000 Pesos.

I would stay there again in a hearth beat!

Room Tip: It is a narrow hotel so I assume all rooms have a view, if you are at least 1st floor or higher...

I stayed at Hotel Estelar, Grand Playa, Manzanillo in July 2013 along with 55 other persons from Trinidad. Overall, it was a good experience but there were some negative ones as well. For such a small hotel, the staff did not always do what they were supposed to, for example, during meal times, dirty plates were left for a long time on the tables. Many times there was no water available to make coffee or tea and when you asked, it took a long time to arrive. The grounds are beautiful and the staff was friendly however, the architectural design does not suit a rainy day. When my group was checking out, we got soaked as the overhead covering on the pathways was not designed for shelter from water and the place flooded very quickly. It was not a nice experience to go on a plane cold and wet. There were no umbrellas available when we asked. The meals were quite good but a bit limited in variety however the pizza was great. The hotel was quite far from the tourist attractions, about 45 minutes but this was not too bad. I stayed on the ground floor and so just had to open my door to get to the pool but the noise from the next room came right through the walls.

We stayed in Estelar for three nights in January 2013. The rooms were OK, clean and spacious, but not cosy whatsoever. The AC was too cold, eg when set at maximum (30 Celsius) it would be still freezing cold in the room. Not sure what's the reason but bedding and other fabrique in the room felt dump. Breakfast is very basic and not really appealing. The pool is of a micro-size and located few meters away from quite a busy road.

Generally, I found the quality of our stay very average with a price being unreasonably high for what we've got.

A standard 3star hotel. Don't expect charm or attention to detail; you will not get it here. My room was clean with a good bed, hot water (90% of the time), and a solid AC. They have a very small (approx. 1 meter deep, 6.5 meters long, 3.5 meters wide) but clean pool. The staff is kind, well-meaning, helpful and somewhat knowledgeable when asked about local places of interest.

Management remembered the shampoo, lotion, soap, mouthwash, stationary, laundry service, snack bar, television w/remote, telephone... but they forgot to add a personal, unique touch to make the hotel memorable. The hotel really feels like an investment property and not a place that is looked after and kept up with pride and joy.

The white paint throughout the hotel looks unflattering under the fluorescent lighting they use everywhere.

Suggestions for the hotel:
Have at least one non-overhead light, such as a lamp, available in the room that does not use fluorescent bulbs. Fluorescent lights may save energy cost, but they create an extremely unattractive light.

Reviewed April 17, 2012

First of all, the previous review that talks about 3 pools, a specialty restaurant and shuttle service is incorrect. It must be a review of another hotel because the Hotel Estelar Oceanía does not have any of those amenities.

Just came back from an 11-night stay at the Hotel Estelar Oceanía. Overall, I think it's a very adequate mid-level hotel with a nice location in Bocagrande. Here's my list of the pros and cons:

* PROS *
- Hotel is clean with a staff that seemed quite meticulous about the upkeep. Housekeeping was efficient and always left plenty of toiletries. Each morning, at least 1 staff member was cleaning the pool/patio area.

- Delicious hot breakfast each morning of rolls, jam & butter, cereals, milk & yogurts, fresh juices, fresh fruit, cold cuts & cheese, scrambled eggs, coffee, hot chocolate and an empanada or arepa or some sort. Breakfast included in your room rate.

- Nice nightly sandwich bar, a real plus considering eating out in Cartagena is expensive (costs more than Bogota). Includes fresh bread, condiments, ham, cheese, shredded chicken, toppings (pickles, tomatoes, lettuce, mushrooms, etc.), beverages (juice and soda), chips and cookies. As another reviewer stated, the menu doesn't change but I thought it was a tasty bargain.

- Staff is polite and helpful, albeit lacking a little initiative (see below). Several of the bellman spoke English very well.

- AC, fridge and cable TV provided. Free wifi is also available. At times the connection was a little slow, but for the most part it functioned well. There is a small pool (and I mean small) and showers.

- The hotel is located next to the Hilton and away from the main beaches. This is a good thing if you want minimal pestering from vendors. I found a little stretch of beach across the street next to the Hilton parking lot. It was divine! No vendors and a nice shallow beach great for floating around and relaxing. There are some small beach shack restaurants that will bring you cold beverages costing about 5.000 - 7.000 COP. Chairs and cabañas are available to rent as the hotel does not have any for guests to use like some of the bigger hotels on the main beaches.

- The hotel is located on the far side of Bocagrande, about a 10 minute walk to restaurants and a 45 minute walk to the Old City. The hotel does not offer any kind of shuttle service but taxis are frequently waiting outside. The street in front of the hotel has a lot of through traffic of taxi cabs and horse-drawn carriages. The street the hotel is located on has lots of little mercados, a lavanderia, frozen yogurt shop, etc.

- The front desk arranged a tour for us to the Islas de Rosario (a bunch of little islands located about 1 hour from Cartagena). Our hotel was connected with the Isla del Sol tour, which turned out to be the highlight of our trip. I would recommend checking out the other islas to see which one is the right fit for you as different islas offer different activities and amenities. The tour cost 108.000 COP per person and included pick-up (but not return) transportation, speed boat to and from the isla and lunch.

* CONS *
- The shower in our room was teeny tiny. I couldn't wash out my hair without bumping into the walls. Also, the bathroom shelf leaned forward a little and some of our toiletries kept falling off.

- The professional photos of the hotel are definitely professional promo material as the hotel shows a little wear (marks on the wall, outdoor umbrellas a little faded). The hotel has a "modern" theme but the finishing of some of the details are a little poor: lighting is really dim, paint job looks rushed, 1.5" gap under the door (we stuffed our bed cushions under it to prevent the cold air from leaking out), small holes in the tile floor, mold on the bathroom ceiling (from lack of ventilation), etc.

- Water pressure and temperature were fine for 10 of the 11 days we were there. On one of the first days the water stopped completely mid-shower and stayed off for about 30 minutes. I never had to ask the front desk to turn on the hot water as another review said.

- Lack of storage space and electrical outlets. Also, except for 2 hooks in the bathroom, nowhere to hang up wet beach clothes.

- Our AC had trouble the last several days of our stay and eventually just ended up blowing warm air. If you have trouble with your AC tell the front desk ASAP as the maintenance man does not work every day. They did provide us with a fan, but by the end of our stay the room (and everything in it) was just kind of damp, the bathroom being especially bad because there is no ventilation in it. Apparently, the hotel was completely booked so we couldn't change rooms. Some sort of compensation would have been appreciated since sometimes outside the room was cooler than inside the room, but nothing was offered.

- The hotel does not have any parking, which was problematic because we had a rental car (was very useful for the trips to the Old City for dinner). The bellmen helped us find parking in 2 different locations as we could only stay in the first parqueadero for a few days then had to move. We had to pay the parking separately.

- There are no extras at the hotel: business center, room service, bar, etc.

- It is located next to some high-rise apartment buildings. Our 3rd floor room was level with the apartment's pool and it was pretty loud at times.

- The front desk never seemed to have maps of the area or change in small bills.

Overall, I thought the location, price and service was pretty solid. I would definitely stay there again as long as there aren't any air-conditioning problems.

This hotel was very nice on the whole, but here are some pluses and minuses:
Plus side first:
Hotel had three nice pools--- one for kids, one was a quiet pool, and one had the usual dj trying to be a rapper, which was odd since nearly everybody staying at the hotel was 40+(maybe Russell Simmons was going to stay there!!! )
Food was really good--- lots of fruit and a decent grill
Rooms were nice
Staff were pleasant
The specialty restaurant is nice and it is easy to book there for a special night
Internet is free and high speed!!!
The room safe is free too!!!!

Minus side

There is NO bank or change place at the hotel, so bring Columbian or US money with you-we had to go into town to get money and it was difficult to get some smaller denominations so we couldn't really tip.The tipping thing is not clear either-we were encouraged sometimes to tip and sometimes not.
For those who love to dance there was a BARE MINIMUM of entertainment and almost NO Spanish music--everything was historical stuff or African-Columbian-no house band-not even American pop music. All we ever heard was the DJ interrupting every song played by the pool--he was really irritating
There is no store at the resort to buy things like toothpaste, etc,Even at a three star in Cuba you can pick up toiletries-nothing here at all.
There were wasted spaces like a patio near the lobby where no-one ever sat and a large convention room which sat empty most of the time
There were no real activities like aquasize or yoga just dancing to the irritating dj
The hotel is far from town but they do provide a free shuttle five or six times a day which is great and there was pick up in town too which was reliable
The beach was generally underutilized and needed to be cleaned up a bit-lots of litter etc. but some people told me they enjoyed it.

The country, at least here in Cartagena is safe-huge army presence everywhere which is a good thing considering the history of the past 15 years. We were two women and felt very safe, safer even than in Cuba. The army has a good reputation and is respected here.
I think Columbia is open for business and they are just starting with tourism which could explain some of the glitches. They really wanted people to go into the town I guess.Cartagena is interesting and the jewellery shopping was great--you have to barter but there is lots of variety. There are also one ot two great coffe shops in town which serve a fabulous frappacino!!
No one's fault but nature --it is the hottest place I have ever visited-- about 34 Celsius every day-but the nights are cooler and nice.

Unless you want to pay for a "4 star hotel" which is really a 3 star one, but with an overall experience of less that a 2 star stay... stay away. I almost never write bad reviews about any place, because my tolerance leve is quite high and don't relly care about little details. I'm not a picky client either, so believe me... this place is not good at all anymore.

Coul be bad luck, but a well run hotel cannot have the flaws I found since yesterday, and AT THE SAME TIME!

- No hot water. There were people complaining at the front desk that it had been going on for 5 days! When I asked, the recepcionist told me it was a failure they were working hard to solve. At a hotel, a chain hotel, this simply cannot happen

- No pool! Last time I came they were fixing it, which I kind of understood. But once again today? They told me it was available today, but if it was empty last night (filling it), the water treatment is not done in less than 6 hours. Lucky, unlucky... don't know, but really bad.

- Internet wireless: free! But no reliability. Last night after 10 pm it went dead. And today, technician had to come to fix it (the hotel's). On business trips, this cannot happen.

Since not everything's bad, the reason why I came back is till there: Location (great), spacious rooms, free light supper and breakfast. The guys at the hotel try to do a good job, but the manager is not helping at all. During my stay, the recepcionist told me he would contact me, which did not happen. The people compalining last night said he hadn't showed up to solve their issues in 5 days!

To be fair, it's not the staff overall... they try to do their best!
