“Private and relaxing accommodations”
Reviewed March 1, 2011

My husband and I stayed at Casa El Carretero for 5 nights in June. It was the perfect escape from the grueling heat the June weather can bring. The rooms are air conditioned, clean and comfortable, and the bathroom has a nice large shower. The rooftop pool is a nice way to relax after a long day of exploring the city (it was hard to leave the rooftop it was so relaxing!).

Although the location is not in the walled city, we enjoyed being somewhat 'off the beaten path'. It was very cool to see the locals playing all night long in the plaza next door to the hotel. It is a short ten minute walk to the walled city, and we felt very safe in the neighborhood we were in.

I would recommend purchasing water/drinks across the street from the hotel at the little corner store as drinks are not complementary at the hotel.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. They always welcomed us home with a smile and never hesitated to give recommendations of places to go to. We had a few friends staying at a different hotel, and they were very nice about allowing them to come over to enjoy the rooftop in the evening. Also, it was very helpful to have the community laptop they allow guests to use.

We really enjoyed our time at Casa El Carretero and I would not hesitate to recommend it.

It was our first time visiting Caratagena as well as Colombia. We really enjoyed our stay at the Casa El Carretaro. The staff i.e. Luis and Maria were lovely and accommodating. We spent most of our time in the old City which was a 15 minute walk from the hotel. Getsamani, itself, is very interesting but a bit dodgey especially at night..so the walk is one that you may not want to take alone. The hotel is lovely. The guest rooms, the entrance, the rooftop terrace and pool are all impeccable. It's time to do a bit of sprucing, however...missing tiles..tired bed linens..new paint wouldn't hurt..but still a lovely place...my only real complaint is owner absence..not a trace of the proprietor..and no contact during our 5 night stay..we were fine..but perhaps needed to know that the proprietor was nearby.. or at least reachable somewhere...However, I would return and I do recommend Casa El Carretero.

I stayed at Casa El Carretero for 3 nights with a group of friends and we had a great time. We booked the entire house which is the best way to enjoy this property....including the roof top with a pool, three bedrooms, reading room, and dining area. Each room had a full bathroom, flat-screen TV, stereo system, ceiling fan, and air-conditioning. There was even a stereo system in the roof top sitting area. The The property also features very attentive staff that made us feel at home. Casa El Carretero is walking distance to the best nightlife and restaurants in the Old City. I showed pictures of the property to friends who didn't come on the trip and they now wish they did.

I spent my 30th birthday in Cartagena, Colombia. Given the size of our group (7 guys) we decided to find accommodation that would accommodate us all but also be close to our the festivities, restaurants and much more. Casa El Carretero fulfilled all the options we were looking for plus more. The staff were amazingly friendly and very communicative. There was not one problem at all. The staff and manager worked with my girlfriend (in Sweden) to surprise me with flowers, chocolate and a card. Just an amazing time. Highly recommended, especially if you have a group of three or more. The pool on the roof was nice and the palm tree going through the casa was creative.

I traveled to Cartagena for the first time and decided to stay in the historic center area instead of the beaches. The hotel is not quite on the historic district but rather 4 blocks away in the Getsemani area. The Getsemani area is not necesarily the best neighborhood in the city, the local residents DO party quite a bit at night and even one night during our visit got into a fight with the local police and created quite a conmotion...not exactly ideal for the tourists! However, I can't blame the hotel for this mishap, they have no control over what happens in front of their place.
On the other hand, the hotel's staff provides the most hospitable service you will experience anywhere! I have worked in hotels for over 15 years and I can tell you that by far Luis and Maria are true hospitality champions and yes, all the reviews are true about the great breakfast they cook!!!
One suggestion/costructive comment for the ownership: The staff does not know the city as well as they should. We asked where the nearest medical center was and they had no clue!
