“Loved the pool”
Reviewed October 17, 2012

This is oursecond time i Casa El Carretero ad it continues to amaze us. We visited the lace back in 2006 and we then went back in this October. The place continues to amaze us. It is located in one of the most beutifull neighborhoods of Cartagena (Getsemaní) and a it is close to restauratas, lovely bars and taverns.

Every morning we were greeted with a custom made breakfast by the hotel chef. They would repare us ommelets, empanadas and great coffee. The juices were always made fresh. The part we liked the most was the pool. We could lug in our iPods and play our own music. It was like having your own luxury estate in Cartagena.

A nice touch the staff did for us was to write us a thank you note for pickig the hotel for a secod time. They remembered that we had been there in 2006. I have repeated other hotels around the world and I have never seen this level of high touch customer service.

I deffinetly recommend the place for anyone going to Cartagea in search of something unique and luxurious.

Room Tip: Pick the Bali Suite, the bathroom has a shower that feels like you are in the rain.

Casa El Carretero is a lovely small boutique hotel in the Getsamani neighborhood in Cartagena. The hotel itself is immaculate -- wonderfully furnished, great breakfast, relaxing rooftop pool (small), and very friendly staff (if you spoke Spanish). The neighborhood has some real life to it; you mix with the locals and the backpackers, just a short (albeit hot) walk from the old city. The owner Carlos, is readily available by email (and presumably phone) - be sure to ask for a discount over the published rates.

What a wonderful home from which to explore Catagena! Casa El Carretero only has three rooms and feels much more like a beautiful house that you are lucky enough to be part. Casa El Carretero is set in the more working class neighborhood of Getsemani in the old city of Cartagena, right off the sqaure Plaza de la Trinidad and the local church. It is only a five minute walk from the central part of the old city, but being slightly removed means that the streets around Casa El Carretero are actually neighborhoods than toursit shops and restaurants - making it a great retreat. One roof is a beautiful little pool that is perfect for cooling off after the heat of the day. To top it off the staff were absolutely wonderful making us feel right at home and the hotel chef made us delicious breakfasts every morning of fresh squeezed juices, fresh fruit, breads and empandas and arepas!

An absolutely lovely place from which to explore the city and I can't wait to return!

It was wonderful after a hot day in Cartegena to return to the El Carretero, relax on the rooftop lounge with a swim and have a fabulous rainfall shower in the room. We thought the location was perfect - a short stroll to the walled city and kitty corner to the Plaza de la Trinidad square. There in the evening was the singing coming from the open church doors, kids playing, families chatting and young tourists hanging out. Always felt safe in the neighbourhood. Also, had a wonderful Italian dinner down the block at the Trattoria. The breakfasts were fabulous and the service great. We were lucky to get a Trip Advisor 50% discount rate.

Room Tip: We had the room floor facing the street. It was never too noisy.

The experience in casa el carretero was great because it was like having your own villa in Cartagena. Although we only reserved two rooms the staff behaved like we were the only guests in the hotel. Every day we got served fresh breakfast and my wife even learned how to make arepas de huevo. The hotel chef gave us the ingridients to make the arepas and showed us how to make them in the kitchen as he prepared breakfast for the rest of the guests.

En the evenings the hotel would light up with candles making it feel like you were back in the 17th century in Cartagena. The pool area which is located in the roof of the hotel is covered with local plants that made it feel very relaxing.

We would recommend taking a walk around the neighborhood in the evening. It is fool of locals telling stories about the news of the days and children playing on the streets. It was a wonderful experience because we got to see how locals in Cartagena live. All the top restaurants were within walking distance of the hotel and we never had to take a taxi except for when we had to go back to the airport.

Thank you casa el carretero for such a great experience. I can not wait to go back.

Room Tip: Bring your own iPod because you can play your music in the room and in the pool area.

it is a nice boutique hotel, with great decor, a relaxing pool area and good home-made breakfast. Internet was working good but it is located in one of the more dangerous neighbourhoods of Getsemani. It was nonetheless an experience going to the square just a block away from the hotel to see the locals hanging out at the plaza, and buying stuff from the grocery stores and food stands (the hamburger was quite delicious). In the day time, it was also a nice walk to the downtown touristy part of Cartagena.

However, as a business traveler, I stood out like a sore thumb. Even the hotel was mainly filled with backpackers. Surprisingly, Cartagena has a serious lack of conveniently located, business-type hotels.

Casa El Carretero is located in one of the most historical neighborhoods of the city. In fact, it is the most authentic neighborhood of all the colonial neighborhoods in Cartagena because it still has locals living in it.

The neighborhood is very safe and in the seven years that we have been operating as a business we have never had any incidents of security with guests. The hotel is business friendly. We provide laptops to guests who need them, there is free WIFI and the hotel is 5 minutes away from the Cartagena de Indias Convention Center. The convention center is the epicenter of all business meetings in the city.

Further more, there is is plethora of restaurants, cafes and museums all within walking distance of the property.

Finally, the hotel is half a block away from the police command which makes the neighborhood even safer than any other colonial neighborhood in the city.

The hotel has been featured in the New York times, Travel and Leisure, Budget travel magazine, etc for its great service, great location and beautiful decor.

The house was very nicely redone and the staff is beyond helpful - the house is located only steps from the Plaza de la Trinidad, where locals and visitors alike gather in the evening for a little music and dance. Awesome little swimming pool on the rooftop too! I had an excellent stay in Cartagena.
