I rented the entire house for my family and we had a great time. We typically stay in the Centro and this was the first time we were staying in Getsemani. Great experience. I was raised in Cartagena, back when you would not go into Getsemani. I was pleasantly surprised to see the changes in Getsemani. Casa El Carretero is part of that change, bringing true comfort and great service and helping restore one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city. The house is beautiful, decorated with great taste and service was impeccable. Maria and Luis were very kind and helpful. We look forward to going back. I highly recommend it as an alternative to the Centro pricier options.

Small and beautiful hotel with 3 rooms only and a tiny pool on a beautiful terrace.
Breakfasts are made on the spot by the great cook maria. Offers continental or typical colombian menus, with freshly squeezed juice. Great start to an exploring day in Cartagena!

Luis greats you at the door and sets the tone for a great, relaxing visit.
Maria and Luz Maria also add to the great experience with hearty breakfasts and superior rooms that are clean, comfortable and furnished very nicely. It is only 3 rooms, so is really quiet and calming.
It is near to a local neighborhood square that teems with life and music all day and it is only 5 minutes to the walled city.
The rooftop pool is small but adds an unexpected retreat from the sun with a great cabana.
If you like a really secure, interesting personalized place- this is for you.

We visited with our 2 children (2 year old + 3 month old) and chose it so we could have some sort of home comforts while travelling with kids. Luis was great and very attentive. Our room was spacious enough for the kids and the aircon was much welcomed, as was the pool. Breakfast was great and sophie loved her fresh fruits and juices

Getsemani is definitely more local than the other parts of the old town but this is what we loved. We sat out in Praca Trinadade each night with a beer watching kids playing football, police hanging out, local girls flirting with local boys and old men drinking a beer- it was like being on a movie set. loved it, highly recommend.

We spent 4 nights :the casa is well located very closed from the touristic places and in a lively ,typic and friendly part of the old town ! We had a very nice room with a balcony .The bathroom is well decorated and spacious .We loved the cooked breakfast ( prepared in front of you in a friendly open kitchen) and the service was very friendly . ..and even with our poor spanish we get good understanding !!! You feel rapidly at home in this casa !! For thjose who do not want any noise at night maybe you fill find the place too noisy but you are in Colombia and people like to discuss late in the streets at nights...this was for us noise of life ...ALso ,nice pool with alounge on the roof ,very nice after visiting Cartagena !!!

Casa el Carretero is a gem in the Getsemani neighborhood. As everyone else said, Luis and Maria are very kind and helpful. The hotel is immaculate, and although our room was tiny, it was very comfortable with a very nice bathroom and shower. Breakfast was great, with a choice of a typical Colombian breakfast (which is very heavy), or eggs, fruit, and plaintains. Either way, the breakfasts kept us full all day and we did not have to eat again until dinner.

Our favorite part of the hotel, by far, was the rooftop pool. It is very private, with an ipod dock and speakers so you can listen to music while you relax. It gets very hot during the atternoon in Cartagena and we spent at least 2 hours a day at the pool when it got too hot to walk around the city anymore.

The hotel is within walking distance of most palces, including the old walled city and the castillo. The only place we ever took a cab to was to a beach in Bocagrande. The neighborhood is very cute, lively, and colorful. Staying here you get a real feel for Colombian everyday life and culture. I always felt safe in this neighborhood, as there are always people out in the streets and police everywhere.

If I were to go back to Cartagena, I would definitely stay here again! Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Don't choose to have the hotel pick you up from the airport. We had arranged it, paid $40, and n...

We stayed at El Carretero from February 6th to February 9th, 2012. This is a very fine hotel located in the heart of the Getsemani neighbourhood in Cartagena. The hotel is within walking distance to the walled city, to restaurants and bars. El Carretero is a small establishment (3 rooms) which makes for a very cozy environment. It has a small but refreshing pool on the roof area. It is kept in impeccable form; everything in it is new and works well. The rooms and amenities are spotless. However, based on our experience, what truly makes this hotel is the staff. We could not have been treated with more warmth, friendliness and attention than by Luis and Maria. It may be that because the hotel is small, this allows this staff of two to dedicate considerable attention to the guests. But undoubtedly, their personal charm made us feel literally at home. We are most grateful for their attention and we do not forget them, we remember them as we look at photographs of our trip. In sum, El Carretero is a great place to stay at when visiting Cartagena.

A totally separate mention has to be made (in order to be fair to the reader) about the Getsemani neighbourhood. This area is in many ways a terrific area outside the walled city. It is full of life, it is bohemian. It may be for this reason that it is loaded with tourists from Europe, North America and South America who stay in the many small hotels in this area of the city. There are many excellent restaurants; the well known Havana bar is located within a block of El Carretero. It is so much fun and an educational experience to go out in the morning and encounter people coming and going which is the spirit of the life in this neighbourhood. One issue that is a problem for all hotels in Getsemani is that this busyness goes on at night too and this can make for very noisy streets. While the walled city goes to sleep at a certain time, the night life in Getsemani goes on well into dawn most times. This is a wonderful feature of Latin American life, but it can make for a noisy night sleep for those who are not accustomed to this.
