My husband, adult daughter & I stayed here for 3 nights. It is walking distance ( 3 minutes) from the old city and has great views from the top of the hotel. The rooms are small due to the age of the hotel but all nicely appointed, airconditioned and very clean. We spent our days on short tours in the mornings and walking the old city in the afternoons and evenings, being able to return to the hotel when ever we needed a break from the heat. The staff were very patient with my poor Spanish and very helpful. The waitstaff even remembered our names, breakfast preferences and that we preferred tea to coffee. This is definately the place to stay.

Room Tip: The courtyard rooms are quiet. The rooms at the front of the hotel get some road noise but have grea...

The staff was wonderful and the hotel was charming and well appointed. My husband and I felt as if we had stepped back in time as we entered the hotel with it's tiled lobby, exposed beams, and stucco walls. The location is perfect, too!

The hotel was perfectly located, clean, beautiful and run by very kind people. This hotel is located at the "gates" of the historic center, it is quite small, only a few rooms per floor. The views are excellent. The "Brasserie" (restaurant) has excellent french food at the best prices! I absolutely recommend this hotel.

We stayed at the Hotel Monterrey as part of a small group doing an add-on to an OAT trip. The hotel is in a great location at the edge of the old city and close to the port, so it was easy to walk to many of the sites of Cartagena. It is an old hotel, so the rooms are not large, but each is unique and many were quite charming. It is centered around a courtyard, where breakfast was served each morning. The rooms overlooking the courtyard were relatively quiet, but streetside rooms had some noise at night from the bar next door.
There were some maintenance issues while we were staying there. The hot water boiler was not working, so for several days the hot water was tepid at best. Fortunately, it is quite hot in Cartagena, so the coolish shower was not so bad. Our room keycard never worked more than once, and then we would have to go get a new one. At first we requested two cards so that we could each have one, but this proved impossible, as only one of them would work. In addition, the lock to the safe in our room did not work, and it took a couple of days before anyone could figure out how to fix it. Most of the help
at the front desk was very accomodating and made efforts to solve the problems, but one woman was unfriendly and appeared annoyed at being bothered.
The hotel has a pleasant rooftop sunning area and small pool, with lovely views of the city and harbor. The restaurant staff was willing to serve dinner up there, so we had a lovely evening eating a delicious meal (the hotel restaurant is excellent) while watching the sunset.
In all, I would recommend the hotel if you like a place that is charming and picturesque and don't mind dealing with a few quirks.

Hotel was very nice, great location, just make sure that you double check if there are any events in the Convention Center. Convention Center is right across the street and during our stay they were have a music festival, techno music all night. We were unable to sleep with the noise, and had to go to another hotel. If there are no events the hotel is very pleasant, rooms are small but comfortable, service was great and for the price is a very good value.

Hotel Monterrey is a beautiful old elegant building close to everything in the historical area of Cartagena. Stepping out the front enterance you have the old town directly infront of you with only minutes walk to many resturants, cafes and shops.

The hotel rooms are cosy with very comfortable beds, airconditioning, large shower and large TV.
Due to the humidty you will want to ask for floors either on the 3rd or the 4th levels. The lower levels you can really smell and feel the humidity and if you have breathing problems it wont end up been a plesent stay. ALWAYS ASK FOR LEVEL 3 or 4, 4 is much better.

On the roof top they have a new pool and are working on a roof top bar. The staff are very helpfull and will do what they can to make your stay very enjoyable.

If your looking for some decenet priced seafood when you head out of the hotel turn left and follow that road down. When you come to your first left again take that left and walk down about 50m and you will see some resturants on your right hand side.

The old city has a large amount of resturants to choose from. If you want to eat in the nice and more expencive ones make sure you book in advanced as they are usually booked out.

The beaches are about 10 min in a taxi and are around 5000 Colombian pesos minimum.

Hotel Monterrey is definetly my choice of places to stay in Cartagena and I will be staying there when I return again.

This hotel was the worst hotel we have ever stayed in. First, I must say the desk staff was very nice. However, we were there in August and, as expected, it was very hot and very very humid. The maid would turn off the airconditioning whenver we left. If we came back to the room and turned it on and left again we would come back to it off. At breakfast the airconditioners were never on. I asked and the waiter refused. One day I took the remote and turned them on myself. Within minutes a waiter came out and turned it off! Everything we owned started to smell musty. I kept spraying our clothes with fabreze but despite that when we got home, even after washing the clothes 3 times and drying in the sun, many items were unusable. And the topper; I found mold at the bottom of our duffels and they had to be discarded along with some clothes! Bottom line: Don't stay here in the summer when it is very hot and humid and air conditioning is a necessity.
