Casa La Fe - a Kali Hotel

My husband and I just returned from a lovely stay at this small hotel. We, too, found the rooms a bit small (but we did NOT find any condoms-used or otherwise YUCK!) as one reviewer stated. BUT we must agree that:
- The "breakfast sausage" WAS a mildly heated hot dog
-The Happy Hour only did include one beverage (not really what I would consider a "Happy Hour"-more like a free drink...).
-The main enterance to the hotel is padlocked all the time and we had to wait on many occassions to get in and out. This was very scarry for us as there were no other ways to get out in case of a fire. When we mentioned this to the manager (my husband is a Safety Engineer for a big comapany and always notices things like this...), we were told "it is to keep out any robbers". While this may be true, it is STILL a huge fire hazard since there is not way to get out onless one has the key or goes to the top story of the hotel and jumps!

Other than this, the hotel is nice.

Its very Important that I correct this report. The only time we lock our wrought iron folding entry doors (which are more decorative than secure) is when our staff are called away from reception. This is a temporary but obvious measure to prevent undesirable persons entering the hotel. At night when all our guests have returned we close the main hotel entrance door (this heavy wooden door remains open while there is any guest traffic so the majority of clients would not even notice its existence). The door is latched but never locked, providing immediate means of escape in any emergency. We have smoke detectors in all rooms, evacuation signs, alarm bells, extinguishers and hoses on each floor and a night porter on duty in reception at all times.

Paid for three nights but left after two nights. Tiny dark rooms, rude and unprofessional management. Dirty bathrooms and used condoms under the bed. Breakfast leaves much to be desired unless you want a cheap microwaved hot dog as "sausage". First time I've seen a boutique hotel "happy-hour" that limits you to "one glass of wine" or "one beer". They lock you in with a padlock at the front gate and sometimes you have to wait to be let in or out. Fire hazard??I travel the world and can't see how they get such high ratings. Not worth what you pay but if you complain you're met with rudeness and disrespect. Should have paid attention to the negative comments before making a reservation here. Positives are cute building and good location.

Second attempt by the same individual to vilify the hotel by filing false and disgusting content. We have asked TA to remove as mutliple filings obviously offend all guidelines.

This small hotel offers cleanliness, amenities and more. What is our best memory is the staff. They did everything and more that they could to insure a worry free vacation. Before we went we emailed the staff a few questions; the answers came within hours. While there the breakfast was delicious; the happy hour was happy (we met some great fellow travelers there); and the city was magnificent. Cartagena was great and we hope to be there again someday. Freddy was the best Ambassador that a city could have.

Just got back from staying at Casa La Fe. I would highly recommend this hotel for several reasons. First, a great location in the Old Town, walking distance to everything. Also, the entire staff is wonderful. Freddy, the manager, is charming and speaks excellent English. He is honest in his recommedations of restaurants and activities. We met some very interesting people at breakfast and then at 6:00 happy hour (free beer or wine). Room was very clean, comfortable bed, hot water in shower, and very good a.c.. What more do you need?

We stayed in Casa La Fe for 3 nights. We found not just the hotel facilities excellent but also the staff. Rooms are very well kept and very comfortable. Breakfast we excellent.
The staff are very helpful and we took some recommendation from them on tours and places to eat and visit during our stay.

After reading so many positive reviews on TA and seeing lovely photos of this hotel and pool, my partner and I decided to book. We were offered the "Loft Room" with a non-refundable rate which we had to pay ahead of time.
We arrived and were shown to our room. We immediately unpacked and headed to the pool! We arrived to a construction zone with a man inside the empty pool cleaning grout and another repainting the columns! We asked when the pool would be operational, we were told in one week. We were told two different stories regarding the out of service pool: one was that it was planned maintenance, the other that the pool "suddenly" broke (grout work and painting?) and needed to be repaired.
We asked to speak with Freddy, the hotel manager. We expressed our dissatisfaction and disappointment- the entire reason for the holiday and hotel stay at this particular property was to walk around town in the heat, then come to the hotel and cool off in the beautiful pool! He repeatedly asked us how he could fix the situation. We explained that, since the product advertised and paid for was not what we received, we kindly asked for a full refund so that we could relocate to another hotel. Freddy stated this could not be done since the rate was non-refundable. We again explained at length that, while the rate was on-refundable, we were NOT getting the product advertised (kind of like buying a BMW and receiving a Chevy). After many calls and haggling between us, Freddy and the owner, we were offered the use of another hotel's pool and a 10% room rate reduction.
Before going to use the other hotel's pool, we asked Freddy to please call the other hotel to expect us as guests and to be given a WiFi code. He informed us this was done. We went to the other hotel and were immediately advised that we would need to pay $15.00 per person, per day for the use of their pool or to consume this amount!
Upon return, we again tried to discuss the unacceptable issue with Freddy and this time, with the owner. We were told that we "had a bad attitude" and were "wound up". The owner actually laughed in our faces and walked away saying that "with our bad attitude" we were unlikely to be receiving the 10% reduction promised...
In the end, we checked-out early and moved to another hotel at our own cost. We did receive the promised 10% (albeit begrudgingly by the hotel staff).
As owners of two hotels in Central America, we offer the following to the management/owners of this property:
1. Advise guests of amenities that cannot be offered when booking so that the guest can make a decision if the property is still acceptable. Of course operational needs sometimes cause amenity failure, but the guest should be told ahead of time. This certainly was not the case in this instance.
2. Advise guests immediately upon check-in of non-functioning amenities. Do not try and "hide" the fact or pretend they do not exist.
3. Refund a guest when requested (at the beginning of a stay), even if the rate is "non-refundable" if the product you are selling is not what you advertise or promise. This is fraud.
4. Do not send a guest to another hotel and expect them to pay for amenities you have not provided.
5. Never, ever, belittle a guest or laugh in their face when they are upset at a hotel problem you control.
My final suggestion to prospective guests: there are LOTS of other hotels in the area (competition is fierce here) that are nicer and cheaper. Do NOT stay here or at least do not expect items promised.

Room Tip: Small and cramped rooms

The alternative arrangements we put in place were excellent - Boutique hotel 20 metres distant from our door with a large rooftop pool with the guests being requested to pay for any drinks consumed there. They did imbibe and then left without settling their bill so we took the heat for that. And so it went on - our hotel's laundry facilities were castigated for failing to remove stains from towels which they had soiled with black graphite (??). The final straw was when Freddy and staff were accused in an unpleasant and aggressive manner of being a lying bunch of individuals!

A friend and I came to Cartagena just for the weekend, so we only were able to stay here for two nights. The room was a little bit small but definitely sufficient. It was also nicely decorated and very clean. They warned us that it might be noisy because it was on the main floor (also cheaper for this reason) but we did not find that to be the case at all.

The hotel as a whole was so charming that we wished we had more time to spend just lounging in their courtyard. It was really close to everything, so we spent much of our time walking around and seeing all the sights of the old town. Breakfast was great as was the free happy hour for guests where we got to chit chat with some other travelers. The dipping pool on the roof was nice after a long hot day spent on a boat tour and it offered nice views of the city.

All of the staff of the hotel were fantastic. We arrived before check in time and they gave us a room to change and leave our stuff as we went and walked around. Some taxi driver tried to scam us when we arrived back to the hotel the first day, but the staff was nice enough to help us while we were in this awkward discussion with him. They gave us directions, booked our trip to Playa Blanca, overall just made things in Cartagena very easy for us.

Would highly recommend this place. A "very good" instead of "excellent" review only because it was a little expensive (by our standards), but Cartagena seems to be that way generally -- and for places that appear much less charming so maybe we shouldn't complain!
