“Crowded but Charming”
Reviewed April 7, 2014

The old city which is walled is full great sites and shops. Very crowded and congested but the main plaza is a beautiful setting.

“Wonderful Setting But the Street Vendors Were A Pain in the Butt”
Reviewed April 5, 2014

There are many wonderful things about the walled city, but the street vendors are much more aggressive than we wanted to experience.

“Walk the walls in the early morning”
Reviewed April 5, 2014

You can walk most of the perimeter of the city right on top of the walls. Good views of the walled city and Caribbean sea. But avoid doing this between 11am-4pm unless you want to risk heat stroke !

“Please stay inside the city.......”
Reviewed April 4, 2014

Don't waste your time staying at some cheesy all-inclusive resort outside of town. Then you'll be facing rip-off cab rides into the old city. Cartagena centro ( the old walled city ) is where it's at.

We stayed here for a week. Plenty to do. Numerous restaurants to get you through the week. If it's the beach you want, do a beach day over at Bocagrande ( where the Colombians go on vacation ). Bocagrande is a 5 min taxi ride. Also numerous options for boat day trips to nearby island beaches.

And safety. Is it safe ? My reply is that unless you're staggering around drunk at 3am with your money belt strapped to you forehead, there's nothing to worry about if you stay within the city walls. Just be careful if you walk over to Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas ( the fortress ) - your environment changes immediately when you walk over the bridge. Also avoid any day trips to La Boquilla ( a fishing village mentioned in Lonely Planet ) as it's unsafe unless you know exactly where you're going and what you're doing.

Enjoy !
