We have had two great experiences booking islas rosarios via Hotel Santa Clara. Who does not love their own private island with hammocks , a beach and delicious homemade Colombian food?DONT leave Cartagena with out doing this wonderful excursion!!

Booked with Tiquetes Tour Playa Bonita.
Booked at dock office, to Playa Blanca. Old , badly maintained open boat with awning, bench seats, 30 people. Broken flooring, supposed to be direct but stopped in a little village in the way to pick up friends of crew, arrived Playa Blanca, didn't answer me, and I speak Spanish, when the boat started driving away without letting us off, refused to return, continued to Rosario Islands, Let us off at the oceanarium at another Island where we had to wait for an hour and a half, walking over coral rocks to get to swim, no sand beach, wanted $15 to rent snorkel and mask. Then took us to Playa Blanca for 2 hours,we bought lunch. Other boats include lunch, and less expensive. A motor died a few times, wet ride back. Awful.

We went to the Islas today and came back with mixed feelings. Unfortunately, we booked at the hotel and don't know the name of the company we actually went with, but I imagine they are all more or less the same.

We left the harbour from Cartagena at high speeds towards the Islands (along with all the other companies), the boat continuously slams on the water, which is some sort of fun, but as this area is known for seaturtles and other marine wildlife, the impact on these animals is not considered, having worked as a volunteer in a sea turtle project I know that many animals get killed by this way of sailing. Moreover, we raced over the Coral reef and through the "protected" nacional parque.

Upon arrival at the Island with the aquarium, we decided going snorkling (costed us 25,000 COP additionally per person which is RIDICULOUSLY high). Then a "guide" came with us, and started to tell about the Coral, which was nice but STOOD everywhere upon the fragile Coral, which is heavily declining here. Then, he started breaking off pieces to show them to us!! You can clearly see that much Coral here is dead and has been destroyed (either through climatical changes or fishing). Also our anchor was dropped onto the Coral!

After this, we left for the beach (Playa Blanca) where the entire beach is lined up with tents / parasols which you can hire for again a lot of money. If you don't want to, you either sit in the sun, or underneath the trees behind the line up of tents without even seeing the sun, and you will get continuously bothered by vendors.... so we walked for 20 minutes to the left from the arrival point to sit at a quieter part of the beach, which was pretty nice.

In summary, some Coral parts that were intact were beautiful, but definitely not as beautiful as in Panama. The beach can be nice but again you'll have to spend additional money. And in terms of supporting this eco destroying business, I can only recommend NOT to go!

We initially wanted to get out there on one of the private boats but those are expensive and seem to sell out quickly on weekends. Ended up deciding to go with one of the Dive tours which worked brilliantly. Decent sized boat to get out to the island - with two engines which gives a much smoother ride - then a smaller dive boat to take you out from Isla Grande. The small beach near the dock is nice, the food is basic, so definitely recommend making the most of the 45-60min trip out to the islands by diving or snorkeling. A great day out!

I don't know what the quality of the water is for divers but I spent a wonderful couple of hours snorkelling in warm water with a good array of coral and lots of fish. I went with Dive Planet from Cartagena and the only slightly disappointing part of the trip was the boring chicken sandwich when everyone else at the resort seemed to be eating fresh fish. Regardless of that quibble, it was a great day.
