We booked one of the higher end private double room for a stay in Cartagena during our honeymoon. When we arrived we found a windowless room with a bathroom-style deodorant machine that sprayed every 5 minutes. We were disappointed with the room, but resigned ourselves. Then we found that there was no hot water- OK in a backpacker hostel, but not in a private room that we'd booked at this price. Also, the room and bathroom were connected, and neither had any ventilation.
All this was bad, but we were still going to stay in the hotel, until we noticed that the person who had brought us into the room seemed to have taken the key with her. We brought this up with the front desk, where the could not locate the key, OR ANY KEY to the room. He assured us that we did not need to lock our room--clearly ridiculous -- and refused to attempt to contact anyone else who might have the original or a spare key to the room.
Since it was impossible to leave all our belongings in an unlocked room in a hostel (with no safe) we were forces to leave and stay elsewhere. As we left the desk guard cursed at us...
This may be an acceptable hostel for those with very low expectation, but in a city with many other options there's no need to risk it.More
