The curch next to a small square in gestemani barrio was the soul of culture of cartagena. Circus, artesanos, locals, turists, children, older, younger all together a big company!

During the day there is not much going on here but at night the square bursts with people of all walks of life. From locals to backpackers, tourists from Kansas to jugglers. Its a great place to just sit and people watch as well as meet new people. I have been over 100 times and I have never seen a problem

As nice as this place is inside! It's what's outside that's really interesting. During the day this church and the Plaza are quite quiet, locals passing through on their daily chores.
At night it comes alive.
If you can, be there for Sunday night, grab a seat outside the restaurant of your choice, and watch the city go bye.
Great people watching, great music and dancing. If your fit enough, hang around long enough and you can join in the hour long Zumba class. I don't know how they do it!!
It's a real work out, add to that 85 f and 85% humidity and you have probably the best free exercise program in Cartagena.

Apart from the restaurants which we'll review elsewhere, there are some great street vendors here. One that's there all the time is Hamburgesa Gabriel. You'll find him and his team easily, bright orange shirts. There's a cook, suis chef and cashier at this street cart. We watched for hours at how hard they worked, nobody touches the food with bare hands, only the cashier touches money.
Best hot dog completo I've seen or tasted.
Othe street vendors make different things, fried pork on plantain looked great also.
Don't be scared to try anything, we watched all of the make "take away" they are so popular.

Colombia is a seriously Catholic country. (Not my favorite cult). But I love to see what locals find meaningful. Stopped in twice. First time the priest with a major amplification system was blasting away, with about 12 parishioners.
Second time, a day later, a much larger congregation, acting as if they were in a evangelical tent meeting. The priest light (as in fire) a small metal basket at his feet. Donno, dies the Pope know this is gong on? Expressive, emotional, catholic services. I had not seen this before.
Worth stopping in to see what is happening.

The church is nicely renovated and normally open for visitation or services. On the square in front of the church you will always find locals chatting, kids on bikes, tourist watching what is going on, some music from somewhere, lots of options to try local street food, all sorts of restaurants nearby, a champagne bar on the corner, a nice pizzeria and all this in an interesting neighborhood with lots of good fotos ops and interesting scenes to be watched. The best time is to go is in the afternoon or evening when it is not so hot any more and everyone meets here to socialize.
