“Rooftop Pool Relaxtion At Its Finest”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 30, 2011

I would probably give a 4.5 out of 5 if TA allowed it. I have no real complaints about the hotel, but to get a 5 in my book, the service needs to be out of this world and the rooms a little more cozy (though the bathroom was quite modern and nice). I have seen past reviewers complain about the price, but it is what it is, you know that going in, so a poor review should not be based on what someone thinks is a high price. This is a lovely hotel, charming in every possible detail. The location is a great launching off point for a day of walking around the walled city or, even better, relaxing in and right around the hotel. The rooftop pool is simply perfect. Two areas with day beds and lounge chairs accompany the large pool which gives you breathtaking views from every angle. One could stay here for days and never need to leave the pool area. The breakfast is very good, served in the open air courtyard which is a wonderful way to start the day. There is a good size gym for those interested (though it is sort of tucked away and hard to find) and the outdoor restaurant which opens at night is a very nice place to grab a meal. Overall the food was solid and worked for a lunch of two, but it was also good to try out local places. The Spa is also quite nice, no complaints there. The service was good and generally helpful, including an English copy of the New York Times' top stories every morning, which is a nice touch for those of us without a command of the Spanish language. One word of warning is that the late night party at the bar near the front of the hotel can go very late and loud on Friday and Saturday, so those with a front of the building, ocean view, be aware, it can be loud. It did not bother me, but I could see it being an issue. There seems to be a variety of very nice boutique hotels in the old city, which I am sure are lovely, but for a larger establishment that includes a world-class rooftop pool, I cannot say enough about the Hotel Charleston. Relaxing, charming and classy.

I've just returned from this hotel 5 days after new years and I have to say I feel like I got hit by a bus and survived. This hotel is trully amazing, romantic, private, the service is impecable the location is perfect and the food is AMAZING, i am having wet dreams with their "arepa de guevo" breakfast and their "sta lucia pizza".

It was a very crowded place for new years partying, but where else in the world can you walk back at 6 am and feel u are in a scene from pirates of the caribean walkimg back home next to the captain. To our surprise this years new year party was hosted by FONSECA with his "arrollito" song made us dance non stop until 3 am.

My suggestion is to go from the 29th through the 8th, the 4th through the 12 th the classical music convention starts and it's when you can really relax and enjoy the cites, the concerts around the city are mind blowing, restautants are not 100% full but still have that ambiant that one needs to enjoy and kickback.

If ever in colombia this is must see.

This has got to be the biggest ripoff for a new years party. We went there yesterday, paid US $350 per ticket for a party that didnt include drinks, terrible service and the food was a buffet that had quesadillas, taquitos and arepas.

There was good music thou, but definitelly overpriced. You should rather go to another party.

I loved walking into this hotel -- from the orange exterior to the flowers in the courtyard, just beautiful. The location is great, with easy walking access to anything you'd want to do in the walled city.

The rooftop pool is spectacular -- the best view I got of the walled city during my entire stay, and just gorgeous. Comfortable lounge chairs, great service (including someone to clean your sunglasses). It's hard to complain.

The room was overall nice/clean -- no real complaints, but not necessarily the most luxurious room I've ever stayed in. Comfortable-enough beds. Great rain head shower.

One drawback was noise. Since our room faced onto the courtyard, we could hear the clanking of silverware starting early in the morning (6ish) as the staff prepped for breakfast. On a Saturday night, the hotel hosted a wedding that was raging until 4am or so with the music blasting. Brutal, but I guess that's a Colombian wedding for you.

The spa area was beautiful -- great place to lounge pre-and-post treatments, one of the nicest I've been in. The massage was solid (not amazing but good), and prices were similar to what I'd pay in a big city US spa.

Food was not cheap, but was decent. Overall, we had disappointing dining experiences in Cartagena (overpriced and underwhelming) so the breakfasts/lunches at the hotel were on the better end of what we had. Can't argue with an arepa con huevo. Was also nice to have the outdoor area up front to grab a drink (without the onslaught of vendors we had at many other places).

Service was overall great, with the exception of some slow responses to dining requests.

Overall, we were really happy with our choice to stay here. I would definitely recommend!

The best decision I could have made was choosing this hotel as the place to stay and to hold my wedding reception. The hospitality and kindness of everyone made of this week the best of my life. The common areas are breathtaking. The pool area has a 360° view of the old city and the bay. The rooms are very spacious and very well decorated. The food was fresh and delicious. The spa is gorgeous and completely comforting. The wedding reception was a fairytale from begging to end. All our family and friends that attended are in love with Cartagena and particularly with this hotel. I stayed several times before in the Sofitel Santa Clara hotel but Charleston Santa Teresa takes the crown!

Beuatiful hotel, at a great location, but the service does not measured up to the property. The best thing they could do is to give the hotel to a internacional chain taht can provide the service that matches the property. A few examples: started doing mintenance at 6:30 in the morning waiking up the guests; 10 waiters at the restaurant for 10 customers, but very poor service. Attitude of the staff is of a 3 star property
