“Great place to stay in Cartagena”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 24, 2014

Great hotel with all the amenities that you will not find in most of the very expensive colonial hotels in the old city. The Hilton is a $5-7 Cab ride from the old city. Pool area is beautiful and beach view rooms are spacious with awesome views. The executive Lounge was a great place to have morning coffee and afternoon tea. The Cartagena Hilton will always be our first choice in Cartagena.

Spent 1 week at the Hilton Cartagena with business colleagues attending a conference at the convention center. We all had reserved executive level rooms with access to the Hilton's executive level lounge on the top floor. The room I had reminded me of a bland hospital bedroom with its decor. I had a nice city view room on the 10th floor but it was spoiled by the dirty/hazy room windows. I had other smaller issues such as weak air conditioning in the room which struggled to keep the room cool. The biggest disappointment was the executive lounge. The afternoon reception started at 630pm in this lounge and ran until about 8pm. They served beer, wine and soft drinks along with some bad lounge food. The lounge food was cheap quality such as microwaved chicken mcnuggets, fish mcnuggets, or bland arepas. The hot breakfast in the lounge consisted of bland eggs, with hotdogs and the cold breakfast was cheese, ham, muffins, cold cereal with yogurt. I might add the nice views from the lounge were spoiled again by the filthy windows- why can't the Hilton hire some window washers? One of my business colleagues checked out after 2 days and moved into one of the boutique hotels in the Old Town area. I had considered leaving the Cartagena Hilton and go to a boutique hotel but I stay in Hiltons all over and have always had great experiences with their executive level rooms and lounges except here. The location was near the beach but a somewhat distant from the Old Town's nice restaurants. The cab ride to the Old Town costs about 7000 COP but would have been nicer to be able to walk to the old town in the evenings. Also in the evenings, the police often setup a checkpoint near the Hilton hotel and stop the taxis to question and search the passengers. My colleagues and I were stopped twice during our stay for no reason. The hotel staff was good and helpful but More attention and work is needed by the management to improve this Hilton property.

Room Tip: Higher rooms offer good views.

The location of hotel was good. The restaurant's food and food in the Executive Lounge was not good. Staff was friendly but needed improvement in English. Lacks a concierge to determine where to go in the area.

I had a great first time trip to Cartagena. When trying to decide whether to stay in Old Town Cartagena or this location. The beach view was the deciding factor. I loved waking up every morning to an ocean view. The property was nice and staff were very accomodating. The beach is a regular beach but if you want to experience absolute paradise go to Playa Blanca in the Rosario Islands. It was wonderful. We went twice and William Lopez Diaz, taxi driver at the Hilton took us both times.

Even though this hotel is not walking distance to the old city it is less than $5 US money one way. The hotel is in walking distance to one of the main streets I think it is called St. Martin street, there are lots of restaurants, a mall and other kinds of shopping on this street. We were two females and we never felt unsafe while walking at night.

While there because we speak limited very Spanish we hired Rafael Herrera, rafaeloso89@yahoo.com to help translate for us and be our guide. He was great so please contact him to use his services.

I cannot say enough about this hotel and this great city. Old Town was nice with the open air dining, shops, Horse drawn carriage rides and live bands. We ate at a seafood restaurant that is on the water and open air. The food was wonderful and so was the view. It was called Club d Pesca. You have got to make this city a definite must on your travel bucket list.

The newly renovated rooms were excellent.
Bathrooms were well designed with good lighting and rain showers. The air conditioning was perfect and quiet. The rooms were very well thought out, with energy saving features. The safe was big enough to hold a computer.

The hotel lobby was dated, odd compared to the newness of the rooms. The elevators were fast and always available.

The pools were good. Three of them and three hot tubs as well. They were all rather shallow, but nice none the less. Even at 80% occupancy it was never an issue to get a seat or three.

The beach was better than expected. The views are great. Always enough seats. In fact it always felt that we were the only ones there. This is likely because the vendors are annoying and scare people back to the pools. I found the jet ski vendors exceptionally bad; driving the jet skis through the swimming area. The massage, fruit, and beer vendors were good. And they were necessary too, hotel drinks were extremely expensive.

The location was good for privacy and views, but after a few days I found it rather boring. It was at least 10 minute walk to find a restaurant or cafe. It gets troublesome in the heat. This is what ultimately bothered me, it's isolated location on the tip of the peninsula meant that walking to anywhere was boring. It's not lively in this little section of Laguito neighbourhood. For some this is a plus, but I like to be a little bit more in the action. Taxis are plentiful, but constant negotiation and scamming is tiresome.

The staff were very friendly and accommodating. They gave me a late check out without fighting for it. The porters genuinely wanted to help. The beach towel lady was my favorite; always smiling. The hotel buffet breakfast on the weekend is worth doing as well. Lots of fresh fruit and even special items like smoked trout.

It's a well run hotel, that was very popular with airline staff. I saw them checking in an out every day. Different airlines too.

Wifi was excellent, even in the room, and by the pool.

Overall I found the hotel rather expensive and the neighbourhood a little too boring. But the pools and beach are likely unparalleled in Cartagena.

Room Tip: Become a Hilton Honors member. All views are good. I really liked the city view.

Perhaps this hotel is not located close to the old city but it is only 10 minutes away by car.
This is an excellent place. Staff is very nice and are always ready to help. Rooms are clean and spacious; pillows and bed are perfect; showers are great; food is very good.
