“a fantastic hotel, one of the best in old town Cartagena”
Reviewed April 14, 2012

I have been many times to the Sofitel Sta. Clara in the past years as a guest on social events or as a hotel guest. The location is absolutely perfect in the historic center of Cartagena and just minutes away from attractions and great restaurants. The Sofitel is together with the Hotel Sta. Teresa one of the most important hotel of old town Cartagena, I would say.The Atmosphere of the hotel is unique beeing an old monastery many years ago,the court yard with its lush vegetation and old well and free flying tucans just beautiful. The pool has a nice decent size and definetley invites to relax for a couple of hours. The rooms are not espectacular, though, not big and just functional. The breakfast buffet in the morning offers a lot variety, fresh cut fuits and fresh juices and you can sit outside in the courtyard between the old columns. The staff is very friendly and attentive and well trained. The Sofitel has also a second building just 100m down the streets Las Bovedas where they offer suites, you have to walk to the Sofitel for breakfast and restaurant but I never cared about that detail. Las Bovedas was recent remodeld. The Sofitel is definitely an expensive hotel but like everything elso in Cartagena nowadays. It suits perfectly business people and tourists.

Room Tip: The Sofitel has a lot of events during the year, political and social events, so the Hotel can get v...

The hotel was beautiful and the rooms were large BUT the butler
service is the best I have had in a long time. The butlers were always around to meet your every need. I do not speak one word of Spainish so they were very helpful to me.
I needed my swim suit repaired and it was returned in a very short time. They helped
with reservations and boarding passes, copies for airport taxes.
Very helpful and eager to help.
Best stay in South America for me.

Room Tip: We had a two level suite, really nice with bathroom and sink on first floor.

I arrived late afternoon and they said that my room is not ready and i should wait (in this hot and humid place - did NOT even offer a glass of water or a cold towel!).
Finally took me to a tiny room (I paid a week ago for a 'luxurious' room). After an argument they moved me to a bigger room. So as the first trick did not work on me, they found a way..
Now I see the AC is leaking !!! A big lake of water on the floor within 30 min of my stay.
The hotel looks great, but the management MUST be changed.
To be continued....

Room Tip: first check your room! have the printout of your reservation - otherwise they will persuade you tha...

Good stay here. Good location to walk around the Ciudad Vieja with plenty of shops ans restaurants. Free WiFi!

Nice breakfast buffet. Be on the look out for Matteo. He's a very friendly and quite colorful Tucan that frequents the open air courtyard.

We were not staying at the hotel but I wanted to go and have lunch there and check it out as I was thinking about staying there when I next visit. We had lunch at the buffet by the pool, the food was delicious, and all the dishes we tried were beautifully balanced with interesting flavours. The service was appalling despite lots of staff (who avoided making eye contact) and few guests. We waited 20 minutes for someone to clear our appetizer plates, and when 20 minutes had been and gone waiting for someone to clear the main course plates we gave up and did it ourselves. Very disappointing given the price and hefty service charge that was built into it. Such a shame the hotel looked lovely but on the basis of lunch I probably wouldn't risk booking that hotel for my next trip.

Simply the best in Cartagena. Service was so amazing that when we arrived at the hotel with bags on a hot day and realized we had made a mistake and had made the reservation for a month later, they simply contacted reservations and fixed everything while we were having lunch.
Beautiful rooms, unforgettable spa, lovely dinners. What else could you ask for?

Very good located, offering a historical touch (using the main parts of a very old monastery)! Great pool area and even better garden area, located close to the ocean and to the historical centre of the city!
