My wife and I visited Cartagena Columbia with Princess cruises while on our Panama Canal tour from Los Angeles to Ft Lauderdale. We toured the city and saw the great sites. The City, which is surrounded by a very high fortified wall, is very nice and clean with very nice houses painted many different colors. Take a picture with the colorful ladies. We toured the church and saw the torture chamber. We then went to the Fort. It is very large and very high up. My wife said she was not going all the way up as it was to far. However when she saw all of our group was going she changed her mind. It is well worth the walk and the view from the top is well worth it. Pirates would not want to attack the fort as it is a mighty site from the water.
Our tour guide was excellent and explained everything about wonderful Cartagena.
Well worth the visit. Ian.

Although the old city is full of vendors, this is an amazing historic cite. I love walking around the old city, photographing the buildings, and walking along the wall. If you like history and heat, this is a great city to spend a week. It isn't known for its beaches, but the old city is a must see if you are going to South America!

We enjoyed our tour for 8 with Claudia. She is very knowledgeable and has a great sense of humor. We were able to beat the bus tours from the ship to La Popa Monastery and got a nice long tour with beautiful views of the city below. Our tour lasted about 3 1/2 hours and was a good value. It was VERY hot! My only disappointment was forgetting to ask for the DVD's we were promised.

Walking around downtown Cartagena is very relaxing and pleasant. You can select over different activities:

Shopping: You can shop Colombian emeralds, regional art, clothing, and other things.

Museums: There are some museums that can be visited including the gold museum and the inquisition one that could be interesting for some and depressing for others.

Drinks: Also you can sit by the park or in one of the multiple squares and enjoy a Colombian cold beer or a soft drink.

Sightseeing: Just walking around the town admiring the beautiful multicolored houses with balconies and churches is a remarkable experience. Only to put the cherry on top walk over the "muralla" the protective wall against the pirates.

My visit was very pleasant by combining some of them.

We did our own tour by finding a cab driver. Paid $10.00 per person return and the driver stayed with the group of us.
We toured the fort then proceeded to the old city. Awesome.
Very hot and humid.
Walked a lot, lots to see.
Take water. To buy water is $2.00.
