“FM RESTAURANTE”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

We were walking around looking a good place to eat in Cartagena, it’s when we pass in front of FM Restaurante and we haven’t looked any recommendation. But looking the Menu and the restaurant inside we’ve given a chance and we weren’t disappointed. The waiters’ service are excellent and the food is really good, they also have a Menu in English and can speak with you in English. During that night there also was a musician playing piano which it was more romantic the night.

“our best meal in Cartagena”
Reviewed July 22, 2013

The food at FM Restaurante was exceptional. It was very quiet on the night that we were there, and we weren't expecting anything extraordinary, so when we tasted our food we were amazed at how good it was. We shared the cannelloni of smoked eggplant and tomatoes to start, and then I had the Grouper fillet for my main dish, followed by a sublime wine-poached pear for dessert. The service was top-notch. After being disappointed by a lackluster meal at La Vitrola, we were thrilled to have such a wonderful dining experience at FM.

“A Pleasing, Relaxing Choice”
Reviewed July 18, 2013

We chose FM based on reviews on TripAdvisor, and were pleased that we did.

It faces a square in the old city that was teeming with life, but *not* with pitchmen selling you hats and geegaws. When our taxi pulled up (we'd come from Bocagrande), we were pleased with the surrounding area, which on this particular Friday night was more relaxed than other parts of the walled city.

We arrived early in the evening (for a Colombian meal; reservations for 8:30) to find a restaurant with only three other couples dining. Even though it was a hot night, we chose to sit in the open-air courtyard, with palm trees towering over us, rather than in the main room of the restaurant (pictured on TripAdvisor). It was a great choice; despite tall walls and trees, the breeze easily cooled us, and reminded us that we were at a beach resort town.

The food was very good, although the steak dish was better than the seafood -- which was a surprise, since it was reversed at almost every other meal we took.

We didn't sample any of the wine, so I leave that to other reviewers.

The service was unobtrusive, but very attentive and calmly professional. I don't know how they would have hadnled a more packed restaurant later in the night (and it was filling up when we left).

All in all, I would easily recommend.

“Pepperfest 2013: Great service and environment, food needs more finesse”
Reviewed June 30, 2013

We had dinner in FM this evening whilst on holiday in Cartagena. Overall, service and environment were first class, but the cooking, whilst aiming high (and pricing accordingly) had one or two basic errors and a seemingly relentless focus on putting as much pepper into every dish as possible. We would probably (emphasis on probably) go back, but only after trying other similar style restaurants (this is relatively high end in Cartagena) - the likelihood would have increased a great deal had they, frankly, used less pepper!

Food:

At the recommendation of our waiter, my other half had a prawn starter and I had the lobster bisque. For mains, we had an excellent prawn dish with an (apparently) vodka-based sauce and a steak with three sauces, again at the recommendation of our excellent waiter Isaac.

The starters were good, but heavy in pepper (a theme which continued throughout the night). The lobster bisque was a bit too hearty and heavy and could have done with being a bit lighter. Big slip up that one of the pieces of lobster still had a big piece of shell attached to it that nearly broke my tooth. Not much meat, so a bit annoying they got this wrong.

Our prawn main course was fantastic. This was definitely the best dish we saw and would recommend it to anyone. The sauce was, again, a bit heavy in pepper, but other than that was great. The prawns were big and succulent and rich in flavour. The steak was relatively well cooked. A bit overdone for medium, but acceptable. The three sauces it came with were an anti-climax, however. The mushroom sauce was dull and, frankly, not something you would serve to guests in your home. The pepper sauce (yes, more pepper) was frankly awful - I understand that peppercorn sauce is a usual accompaniment to a steak, and one that I usually enjoy, but the pepper here dominated the sauce to the point where it was inedible. Passing the feedback onto the waiter he mentioned that, unsurprisingly, no-one ever ate it. Why not show some emotional intelligence and ditch it then?? Luckily, the mustard sauce was fantastic and was a superb addition to make sure that cow served a purpose!

Did not take dessert as we had other plans.

Service:

Excellent. The chap who looked after our table (Isaac) was knowledgeable about the menu and the area. Amongst the best service we had had in Cartagena. He also spoke some english, should you need it.

Environment:

Great. Converted colonial house on a park, so as one would expect (if you have seen the city before). We almost felt it was a shame that so many of these houses have become restaurants over the last few years - if it continues, there won't be any homes left in the old city! Very nice place to eat though, we are sure it would be enjoyed by whoever visits.

“Our favourite!”
Reviewed June 16, 2013

Searched this place out in the middle of the old city and what a great meal! Everything from ambiance, service and the super food made it the yardstick by which we measured all the rest and they were never beaten!
