To begin, you don’t go to Cartagena for pristine beaches. But you do go for fun, good food, square prices and really nice people along with a city that’s strikingly beautiful.
But if you like the beach and want it to be a chill experience, Muelle a block or two southwest of Hotel Dann is a great place to spend the day. We found it by accident taking a walk from our rented condo near the Capilla del Mar on carrera 1. Hubie, one of the waiters laid it out pretty simply---“eat and drink here and you get lounge chairs, a freshwater shower and freedom from the vendors. ” Hubie sold us…
He runs the downstairs section…but nothing against Hubie, our next five visits were upstairs with Jhonny. The view from the second floor to the beach was beautiful. Really good drinks, freshly made juices, ice cold beer and some good dishes like octopus in Cartagena sauce, seafood rice and the whole snapper " la plancha" on the charcoal grill.
They also have free wifi….the great mystery is why this place isn’t packed…although on a Sunday it was hopping. Everyone here was super friendly…Jhonny rocks. The food is good, the music wonderfully random---i.e., Metallica, Rick Ross, Shakira, Chris DeBurgh, Gregory Isaacs and Thievery Corporation can all be heard in a 30-minute span. And you see Colombians ordering bottles of Old Parr Scotch with ice buckets and bottles of soda water. If you’re lucky, someone will grab one of the strolling bands and pay them to play a few songs.
