I took a taxi to Mercado Bazurto and spent an hour or two wandering around solo. It was a wonderful experience and different from other markets i have been to. You can buy anything and watch people cutting up fish and creatures, selling produce and serving up lunches cooked over wood fires. The place smells horrible and is loud with voices, horns, and music. The people were mostly very friendly. I felt a bit too conspicuous to take photos, but i didn't feel unsafe at all - even as a solo, female visitor. I would recommend it, as it is a welcome change from the old city.
