Makako Chill Out Hostel

No major complaints. Place was clean and staff helpful and friendly. It did not strike us as a party place at all. It was quite relaxed. The private double was so-so. Nothing special but not bad. The 2 restaurants right underneath are excellent. The pizza place in particular.

Makako is the best place I stayed in Cartagena (better than Mamallena and El Viajero). The staff are friendly, welcoming, and helpful. It's got a good ambiance and the common area feels like that of your house back home: big screen tv, couches, and a nice balcony that overlooks a quiet side street in the Old Town. The only drawback I saw was that the TV was on 90% of the time, which did get a little annoying, but not that big of a deal. When I was there, it didn't seem like a party hostel at all. The people were social, but only early in the evening and then everyone would go out. It was never too loud or anything....but I guess that all depends on the guests, so you can't blame the hostel one way or the other. All in all, I really enjoyed this hostel and would definitely recommend it.

Room Tip: If you want more quiet, don't get 10 bed dorm that is joined to the common area. The other rooms...

This hostel is in a very great spot, within walking distance of everything in the Old City. Dorms over priced though, and I can assume the other rooms are as well. Staff was great, good kitchen space. Not as chill as the name suggests, the TV is constantly on with music blasting and social travellers pre-drinking. Calle del Quero, where the hostel is situated, is also quite a busy street, even early in the morning. Many beeps! Moderately comfy beds. Free internet (computer included) and lovely patio.

Room Tip: Try to score a room far from Calle Quero. If you're dorming, you have no choice.

The girls running the hostel were super fun and friendly! On arrival Gina gave us a great run down of what to do and where to go in the area. It was in a nice location in the old town centre in walking distance to lots of restaurants and bars, the walls and a huge Exito supermarket. The rooms were clean but lacked a bit of space for ones bags etc. The bathrooms were very basic and could do with a hook or two to hang up toiletries or towels.

Good location but private rooms are seriously overpriced. Dorms might be ok value for the neighborhood but shared bathrooms are grimy. "Chillout" is a misnomer--its loud and people are there to party rather than chill. Probably great for gap year kids and solo backpackers looking to socialize, but not the place for couples or solo travellers who want to relax.

Nice, relaxed little hostel within the city walls of Cartagena. The location of this place couldn’t be better – it’s in a little street, around one block down from the main drag, and about 5 minutes walk from a huge supermarket. It’s a long way to the bus station – a taxi costs around COP25,000, but this is true of any hostels in the area. A taxi to the bus station costs as much as a long distance bus to the next city.
The dorms are large, clean and have air conditioning (albeit only for a limited time at night). There are wardrobes, but these do not lock. There are security lockers at reception, but these are tiny and only able to accommodate a phone, camera, passport etc.
The large dorm has an en suite bathroom, and there are two other bathrooms dotted around. The bathrooms are clean, but the water is not particularly hot (though this is not necessarily a problem in Cartagena).
The kitchen is very big and well equipped, though not particularly well ventilated. If you’re cooking over the stove in there, you’re going to get very, very hot!
The common area has a number of sofas, tables and a huge TV, with English language cable. There’s also a balcony at the front with a view a picturesque street.
The staff are absolutely fantastic here. They speak perfect English, and bring you coffee and juice if they see you sitting around.
Beer is available for COP2,500 for a small bottle. Officially, you can’t take in your own drinks, though they seem quite relaxed about this.
Wifi is fast and reliable and available throughout the hostel. There is one computer at reception for general use.
There is a laundry service, but it’s very expensive. We paid COP30,000 for an average sized load, which is a lot more than in other hostels. Save your laundry for your next destination, or use the Lavanderia.
There was not much atmosphere when we were there, with most people sitting around on their laptops or watching the TV, though you probably can’t blame the hostel for this.

This place has a prime location right in the of the old section of Cartagena, on a quiet and clean street across from a pretty luxurious B&B. It's situated right above a couple nice restaurants, including La Mulatta, which was probably the best deal we got in the city - amazing set lunches.

Makako's got a very homey vibe to it - the staff are really friendly and exuberant, and there were people hanging out most of the time. The den space was really nice, save for one smelly couch, and the place has a great vine-covered balcony overlooking the street below. The rooms/beds were adequate, bathrooms were OK, and the kitchen a bit on the messy side.

As folks have said, it's a bit steamy w/o AC in the rooms, so beware. The hammocks outside definitely give you a solid place to relax in the shade while enjoying the occasional breeze.

All in all, the charm of the space and its staff make Makako an very good hostel choice in Cartagena.
