“Good be better..”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 28, 2011

New hotel located next to the airport with 10 minutes drive to the Walled city( old town). Hotel has a transportation to the center, but i wouldn't count too much to that. During our 10 stay on this property it didn't run on 3 nights (carnival time) and also at least 2 time when we tried to use it the bus newer came for some reason. However taxis are cheap, so no problem of getting to the airport.

Staff could speak little better english. Front desk staff almost the onlyones that can communicate with english, don't expect others to do that. I think that hotel like this should have staff with more language skills if they wan't to consider themselves "worldclass" or bit "luxury" property.

Breakfast decent, i did miss little bit more variation to the foods as they were mostly the same every other day.

Very nice pool areas. The main pool was a bit crowded during weekends but still enough room for all The pool on the 10th floor had a great views and nice atmosphere also. You can also take advantage of the other pools at the old wing (las americas global resort).

Beach isn't the prettiest, but in cartagena's scale good. Not much vendors also around to bother you (they just walk throught the beach sometimes)

Hotel room average. I didn't found anything to be wrong with it, not just exactly my style. Also there wasn't any information on the room of anything about the hotel. There is a room service, but no menus for that in the rooms. These infos would be a nice to see, althought at this time we didn't need those.

Overall i did enjoy this hotel, mainly bacause of nice pools and quiet surroundings. I do still think that if they want to consider to be one of the best in cartagena there is still some way to go. Next time i would maybe go (if the Sheraton isn't already ready) to Hilton where i belive that staff is more international.

Room Tip: make sure you get a ocean view

This was my first time ever traveling to Cartagena - and part of the magic that made this vacation so spectacular - was the hotel! We have only been here for 4 days and tomorrow we leave - but I will be back at this hotel. I came to Cartagena to meet my future mother in law, and amazingly enough - the one bedroom hotel room was magnificent. The hotel staff was more than accommodating with a simple yet brand new single bed that fit perfectly in the living room amongst the other furniture. Our room was MAGNIFICENT - it had two complete bathrooms and our private bathroom a large closet, huge sink area, whirlpool tub and large luxurious glass enclosed shower with the shower faucet is lodged in the ceiling for that "rain" feel.
The hotel and all amenities were brand new, the 4 separate outdoor pools, manicured grounds, the lobby main pool, the rooftop infinity pool, multiple bars and great restaurants made for an amazing vacation.
I cant rave enough about the actual hotel itself.... I didnt have much interaction with the staff other than every single time we got out of the taxi the bell hops were there quick to open the doors and assist with everything we needed. Also, making sure we were well taken care of by the taxis. The hotel has very heavy but virtually hidden security. I felt that about most of Cartagena - there must be a major crime issue in town (but I didnt see it ONCE!!!) because there are "policia" everywhere - but no fighting, no drugs, nothing that wouldnt make me come back time and time again.
Very quickly - you are about a 5-8 minute taxi drive from the old city - but in the best direction to be away from it. Much easier to commute those few minutes from the old city this direction than the other.
I could go on and on about Cartagena itself - the good and the few not so good - but to be fair, this is a hotel review site.... and everyone should know the newer side of the hotel (Torre del mar) is one fantastic hotel!!

Room Tip: Ask for the highest floor - and dont get stuck in the old hotel next door... .its nice and colonial...

If you're looking for somewhere with luxurious rooms and nice pools you'll like this hotel.

However, there isn't much more to it than that. The lobby and restaurant had a sterile, airport lounge feel to them, the service wasn't great , the spa treatments were very expensive and the front desk staff were unable to provide any tourist information or recommendations about things to do in and around Cartegena.
And don't expect the amazing-looking luxurious beds on the beach as shown on the website - they don't exist.

Last week we stayed at the brand new 'Torre del Mar' at this resort and it was a really bad experience. The service was poor, the design was vulgar and the food was horrendous. The owners of this hotel wanted the new tower to be ‘world-class’, but they got it wrong. They ended up with a sleazy version of a hotel that lacks class and style. While some of their ‘nouveau riche’ guests seemed to enjoy the sleazy amenities like a ‘walk around violinist’ while you eat breakfast, we found it annoying and disrupting. The only positive thing was the room. It had a lovely view of the sea and the beds were very comfortable.

We stayed for 5 days and love it. Staff was friendly , professional and helpful. Rooms were clean, ample, nice beds and good A/C.Best of all, the private beach with few people selling stuff.Several pools available for kids and one on the last floor for adults only use which is nice if you want to relax. Breakfast was included in the room rate and had plenty of choices. Food overall was fairly good. Free transportation to and from airport and downtown was available.
Thanks for a wonderful time , we will be back.

Room Tip: Rooms with beach view are the best, ask for it.

We arrived at the hotel at 11AM and naturally there were no room available for us until 3PM. Check in process was a little disorganized, no defined lines or queue so you kind of just have to wait until there is someone free to help you and push yourself to it. The guy at the check-in spoke good enough english and was very helpful. Our original plan was to check in quickly, unload our stuff in the room and head to the city for lunch. We were told that the room might be available by 1 PM so we decided to wait and have lunch at one of the restaurant in the hotel - Salon del don Cristobel. This is where the problem started, service is really poor and most staff don't speak english. It took 8 minutes for someone to give us the menu and another 10 minutes to get our order and give us some water. Another 4 minutes for the soda to arrive. Finally we were ordering after about 25 minutes later. My friend ordered a steak and gave clear instructions on how he wants it "well done". I ordered a pizza. My pizza came in about 15 minutes and shortly after my friends steak came. It was cooked medium with some pink in the middle. He asked for it to be cooked more and they obliged, brought back the steak and it still has a little pink in the middle. Asked again to cook it more and finally they got it right. Mind you my friend speaks fluent spanish so I don't think it is a language barrier.

By the time lunch is done it was already around 1:45PM, they had a room ready for us. The room was situated at the farthest most section of the hotel compound. The balcony open to the tennis courts that are being used, all you can hear are the balls bouncing and the tennis players making sound as they hit the ball. We went back to the receptionist and explained that the room given to us was not acceptable. They assigned us a room on another section facing the mini golf course with a tiny view of the beach. Not great but better than the other room facing the tennis courts.

It started raining early in the evening so we were forced to stay in and have dinner at the hotel. Unfortunately our experience during dinner was no different from lunch. It just took a lot of effort to get the staffs attention and when you do it takes them forever to get things done. Just poor customer server with no regards to customers.

I decided to email the public relation officer about the situation and was replied back within 12 hours by Elena. I offered to meet with her to discuss the situation and we met the next day. She apologized and admitted that we are not the first people to complain from that night. She promise to address the issue. Elena was sincere and making us feel good about our stay. We noticed a change in service the next day during breakfast, slightly better service but not something to write home about.

The rest of the hotel is great. Hotel is a little dated but still very lovely. Families with kids can't go wrong with this hotel. Lots of activities for kids (2-16) in fact a little more that we care for. Every open space in the hotel compound as something for the kids. Schedule of activities are posted on every floor closed to the elevators. One of the reason we chose this hotel is because of the private beach that is free of vendors that tries to sell you something aggressively. There is free shuttle to the old town that runs pretty much every 2 hours. Great service. Bottom line is if you are looking for value and have kids stay at this hotel. If you are a couple you might want to choose to stay at the new tower. It is ultra modern in design. By the way even if you are staying at the old hotel you are free to use the pools in the new tower including the infinity pool on the top floor. There is also a Juan Valdez Cafe in the new tower. A restaurant that is more modern. Entree in both hotels restaurants runs about 35,000 to 45,000 pesos. Buffet is 42,000 at the time of this review in both hotels. I had a small pizza for lunch that cost me 16,000 pesos. Tip is always included in the bill. We found this to be true in a lot of the restaurants in the Colombia.

Room Tip: If staying in the old hotel, get room in the third floor

We booked our trip expecting to stay in the older side of the hotel, but were happy to hear that the "Torre" side had just opened, so we opted to stay there instead. The hotel was very modern and upscale, and we enjoyed everything about it. The service was wonderful, the rooms were spacious and the hotel was very clean. There were 6 pools on the property, but we also were a minutes walk from the beach, so we had many options.
The only problems we encountered were that the hotel was almost too new. Construction was going on, so the fitness center and spa were not completed yet. Also the rooms lacked a binder that showcased the many options available at the resort, such as room service, restaurant menus, basic hotel information, shuttle service information, etc.
We were able to obtain this information quickly from the front desk, but it would have been convenient to have it at your fingertips within your hotel room.
