Marelvy in addition to being an excellent and knowledgable tour guide in Cartagena, she is extremely well organized, meet us on time, and provided a clean, air conditioned mini van with clean windows through which one could take pictures. I would highly recommend her instead of the 50 passenger bus through the cruise line, you will get a better tour for less money!

Only way to tour Cartagena!
We were in Cartagena for 6 days and couldn't book our tour with Marelvy until day 4. So I would recommend booking early with her!! So we toured the city on our own for the first few days plus we went to beaches in playa blanco. Our 1/2 day tour with Marelvy was the most productive part of the trip. She took us not to just the tourist places but the local areas too. Plus shared tons of colombian history.
Personally, I love private tour guides in cities, where they can cater to your needs and take to places off the beaten path. We were so blessed to have Marelvy as she recommended amazing resturants, record shops, boats rides back to playa blanco ( for 1/2 the cost we paid when booking our tickets on our own).

Hands down the best way to see all of Cartegena!!

Traveling the first time to Cartagena we were uncertain as to what to do. After researching different options and the reviewing Marelvy Pena-Hall webite we decided to send Marelvy an email. She confirmed our reservations and did not require payment until date of the tour. She recommended the Highpoints of the City tour which lasted four and a half hours where we explored and learned about her city and country. We began with a visit to the summit of La Popa - a beautiful old convent and church with its magnificent full circle panoramic view of the entire city. Before we went onto the Fortress of San Feliph to learn about its history we spent some time at a local market to shop for souvenirs. After cruising some of the local neighborhoods we enjoyed a nice walk through the Old City, visiting the Gold Museum, the main plazas and some cloisters. We ended with a short drive thru the new part of the city. Marelvy speaks excellent English, is very knowledgeable about her city and country and its history, addresses everyone's interests, and engages with each person in the group. This was a great day and a great way to experience one's first visit to Cartegena. She left us with a gift of a poster that she and her husband designed regarding the becentennial of the independence of Cartagena - it has found a special spot to be displayed at our home. IF you visit Cartagena - book with Marelvy - you will have a wonderful and informative day with a wonderful lady.

On a Panama Canal cruise, our stop in Cartegena provided many tour options. We rely heavily on cruise board reviews as well as TripAdvisor to help choose non-cruise sponsored tours.

A wonderful way to experience our first visit to South America..Cartegena is a richly historical city and Mare Ivy was knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and intuitive to needs of the group. Highly recommend!

We were recently visited Cartagena with the Coral Princess.
I made arrangements online with MareIvy for a general overview tour of the city.
It was great--we started at La Popa that has great views and an interesting history. Then on for a quick stop of the fort to hear about the history--but we did not go into the fort. Based on a past visit, you really need two hours or more to see everything there. We then did a walking tour of the old walled city and a brief shopping stop a Pierino Gallo (sp?). Feedback from the other 8 couples on this tour said that this was one of the best of the cruise.
MareIvy has excellent command of English with almost no accent. Very knowledgeable of her city and its history. Highly recommended.
There were 3 ships in port the day we were there. Our table mates at dinner who used ship's excursions, said their tour guides (they were all on 3 different tours) had poor command of the English language and very heavy accents which made it very difficult to understand on the poor speaker system on their bus.
People seem to be concerned about safety--I saw no reason to be concerned. Unlike a past visit in the mid-90s, there were no "federales" standing around through out the city with AK-47s. I didn't think the vendors were overly aggressive either--but perhaps with the 3 ships in port, the tourists significantly outnumbered the vendors.
