“Make sure you beat incoming guests”
Reviewed October 2, 2012

Great place, loads of fun. Very easy to make friends and find traveling partners and trips. There is constant movement of guests in and out of the hostel. So much that you can easily end up without a bed if you don't make your reservations right! (I saw that happen!) If you go you can save a lot of money with a HI card. Although there is little shade in the patio in the day (watch out! Cartagena is hot!), and the beer is a bit expensive, there are tons of activities that make up for it, not to mention all the cool installations like chargers and free lockers in the dorms. The workers like the cleaning ladies and the maintenance guys are easy to approach and make you feel welcome there. The front desk staff are usually kept busy, but are very helpful and have a great smile to help in what ever need or question you have. Lots of them have great advice on inside country traveling, too.

Hola! I stayed at El Viajaro for 3 days at the start of my 20 day stay in Cartagena & it was great. I paid for a private room & private shower which is located in a separate building across from the main building. It got very cold at night with the air-conditiong & there were problems with turning it down but they gave me an extra blanket. I unfortunately have not had that problem again as the family I am staying with in Espanola has no air-conditioning. Very nice staff and most speak some English & were helpful with my elementary Spanish;) The breakfasts were nice but mainly just carbs. Down the street towards the wall there are usually street vendors there selling my favorite fresh : the arepa de Huevo which is a fried corn pocket with some ground meat & an egg with some sauces to apply to them. Not the healthiest but that is the theme here. Definitely try this & the granadilla, a fruit which has no English translation. I can say so many things about this area as I am staying here for a while exploring & learning Spanish but this is for the hostel. I do recommend this place for all sorts of travelers. It is a reasonable price for what you get compared to other places in this area. Oh, & no one has hot water in the old city, getsamani or surrounding neighborhoods nor would you want it! I don't know about the Hotels in Bocagrande but that is not experiencing the real culture (although check out the beach in Bocagrande). It is very hot & humid. Where sunscreen, drink lots of water (the ice is ok bc everyone seems to use filtered water for this) & try new things! There are so many of them here. I love this place!

Oh the air-conditioning, ohhhh the air-conditioning!!! Bliss! A pool would make this place near perfect, but you can't expect everything right!! Great location. Breakfast is fine. Friendly helpful staff and good wifi. That's most based covered well.

Great atmosphere and structure. The beds are fine and so is the breakfast. No problems with the showers and bathrooms neither. The water is "cold", but you'll see that this is not a problem at all (the town in veeeeery hot!).
The staff is OK and always available to give infos about places to visit and stuff like that. There's only one guy there that ain't very friendly...
The location is also good, inside the old city (the most historic part of it).

We stayed at El Viajero for 6 nights in August and found it to be nowhere near as much a 'party hostel' as we'd expected. The main area around reception and the dining/lounge area were fairly loud at most times of day, but the rooms further away from the front were fairly quiet. It's a good place to meet people too. Staying in dorms you always expect that people will come and go at different times of day and night, but that's pretty normal. Air con in the room too and for me, that's must in Cartagena! Beds comfortable. Staff mostly very helpful and breakfast included is a big bonus. Bread, cereal, cake, orange, tea, coffee, hot chocolate.

Room Tip: It's quieter up the back so rooms 7 and 8 if you're staying in a dorm are up the back.

El viajero isn't a fancy hostel like some places in cartagena but the vibe is great, the employees are friendly and helpful (they all speak English and know the area very well) and there's AC! Its a real easy place to meet people and the included breakfast is nice in the morning, plus with two TVs everyone's happy (specially when something like the Olympics are on )

p.s did I mention all the dorms have AC?

it's one of the best hostels I've stayed in, amazing courtyard with sunchairs, open showers, very big rooms with an excellent AC (in every room!), free breakfast (juice, coffee, tea, cereals, bread, butter, jam, cake). the only thing is that the staff is kind of arrogant, sometimes you need to wait several minutes in front of the reception before you get attendet, even if they don't have other people there, also they seem like they don't really have time to answer you questions because the facebook photos on the computer are much more important :)
another thing is music and concerts...i love music and it's a great place to make a small concert, but starting at 10 PM?
seems that they are a little too convinced in themselves and act like this...pity, it's such a great place...

Room Tip: all of the rooms have AC and when there's music, it's heard in every room
