“great staff”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

The food was as good as any highly rated restaurant anywhere
, The entire staff was extremely friendly and helpful and could not do more for the guests
The setting is beautiful and well maintained;
If you are looking for a retreat with great food, this is the spot
My only critical aspect was the size of the room, it was adequate but on the small side.
A worthwhile hotel to stay in, if you are in the area and not staying there it would be worthwhile visiting it for the food as it was the best of all the restaurants we tried on our visit

We have been in Cartagena and wanted to arrange massages at the Karmairi. Despite calling them and having our hotel in Cartagena call them, we have been unable to get through. This includes using their free skype call link on their webpage. I recommend that you make your reservations/plans well ahead of time as reaching them is hugely difficult. We have been excited to explore this property given the great TripAdvisor reviews and are saddened that this may not happen during our stay.

If you are looking to decompress and relax, this place hits the spot. The welcome drink, to the bar, to the restaurant meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), to the service, it was all just perfect. No worries at all. We had a group of 5 couples. Massages were amazing, pool and beach setup were great, and the mojitios and rum and tequila flowed just right. Ask for Frank, as he can make your stay extra special by attending to all your needs....they even hooked us up with a boat for the day (captain included) that literally was one of the best days of our lives, just off the charts---bluest water, pure white beaches, privacy, lobster lunch, and music to boot! Stay here for a few nights and then hit up the old city as needed.....

Room Tip: Top floor or room with beach-view balcony.

We were staying at the Sofitel Santa Clara with construction works and escaped here for a quiet day out. It was magical and very relaxing. Lunch was delicious ... Don't miss the ceviche! We spent the day at the beach and then went up to the hotel for lunch. The other guests all seemed happy and very chiled.

My husband and I had a wonderful time at the Karmairi hotel in November 2012. We loved the hotel's service, the beach front property and the amazing pools/lounge. We had only extremely positive things to report, until there was an issue with our Expedia payment (which was pre-booked/pre-paid). They ended up double charging us on our credit card and after finally settling it with our credit card company earlier this year, we got charged again in May, many many months after our stay. Please be warned when using credit cards at this hotel..

We are very happy to know that you had a wonderful time at Karmairi Hotel Spa and you enjoyed our service and hotel areas.

As for the issue you report about the double charging situation, we are aware of an error that basically presented because of a system and comunication problem. We are very sorry about this inconvenient and after we were aware about this mistake, we made the required process to reverse the transaction.

About this problem i can assure you that this is not the type of service or situations that occur in Karmairi.

We also checked about the other charge you inform that was made to your credit card in May, but we have verified every single transaction from this month and all of the charges that were made through our virtual payment system have their respective support, for which i assume this charge you have from may do not correspond to a transaction made from Karmairi Hotel Spa. We would appreciate if you could send to us any evidence you have from this situation so we can make a second verification to this case, because we don't want for any reason to have this type of mistakes from happening in repeated situations.

Please feel welcome to visit us in the future, because we would love to receive you again as a guest and like i said before you can be sure that this is not who we are as a company, because we make sure all of our transactions are secure and correct for all of our custumers, so this is an inconvenient that you won't experience with us in future oportunities.

Best Regards,
Andres Lesmes

We were a little concerned when the van went down the dirt road filled with holes to get to this hotel but were so excited when we got to the hotel. This is not your sleek modern american style hotel. It is a quaint small hotel with a friendly and welcoming staff. They tried to speak english as much as possible but we were able to communicate ok. It is hot and humid in Cartagena and the bathrooms were screened but open. The bedrooms are able to be closed off to the bathrooms and are air conditioned. It is clean and the beds comfortable. We have traveled internationally a lot and love hotels that are different than large chain hotels. The food was great and the service staff so much fun and eager to please. We get massages weekly and my husband had a massage at the spa and said it was the best he has ever had. It is located in a developing area and on the beach. Very quiet the only noise were the birds in the morning and only 20 minutes into the city. I would love to go back.

Room Tip: This hotel has only 14 rooms. The room we reserved for 3 nights was not available when we arrived f...

We stayed at this 14 room adult-only hotel for 4 days for a wedding and would never have picked it on our own, that being said, for the most part, we really enjoyed our stay. It is located on Playa Manzanillo which is about 30 minutes outside Cartagena depending on traffic (a 35.000 peso trip by taxi each way.)

The pool area and beach are lovely - the pool has more than enough room for the 14 guest rooms it serves. There are also several lovely daybed/cabanas on the beach. The beach is completely unoccupied and pretty much wide open for the hotel guests. We were not approached by a single beach vendor the entire stay. The decor is imported balinese mixed with modern imitation wicker/rattan. It is all in good condition and lovely. The beach is clean and the water is warm, the waves tame and it's quite shallow.

The restaurant was very tasty and I thought fairly priced, service was slow (I think due to the kitchen more than the waiters) but friendly and hardworking. There are plenty of options to keep you from getting bored in a 3 day stay, but if you stay a week, you'll probably have a desire to venture out, unfortunately the only thing close to the hotel are other hotels and condos (Estelar, Karibana, Los Morros, and quite a bit further on, Las Americas.) I would not recommend this hotel if you have not yet spent some time in the old city of Cartagena as it's pretty far away to be going back and forth all day, though it's possible - we went out to dinner a couple of times.

The spa services were fine though pretty expensive - its downside is that it's basically just part of the pool area (also outdoors) so if anyone is talking in the restaurant or in the pool area, you can hear the whole conversation during your massage.

We stayed in a Standard Premium room and if we ever went back, I would only do so if we could stay either in the one of the 2 junior suites (2nd floor but facing pool area/ocean) or the only suite (third floor). These are the only rooms in the hotel that face the ocean/pool.

Though our Standard Premium room was clean and the decor was pretty, there was a constant, noisy air-conditioner or generator humming outside our room 24 hours a day (not the unit in our room but something down below) and since the bathroom is just a screened in area (and the bathroom door is also just wicker mesh), all the noise enters directly into the room. The AC wall unit in the room kept it perfectly cool, but the bathroom is, of course, warm because it's an open wall to the outside. Also, our "balcony" would be of use only to a smoker b/c it looked at the AC units and an ugly concrete wall - we had no view of anything, just a bit of natural light. Other friends of ours that stayed in Standard rooms had even worse rooms that were even smaller and which had no windows or natural light. So be advised, you either better book a suite or accept that your room will not have any view and will have significant noise, we could not even hear the ocean due to the AC noise. Since we were staying with a wedding party, we got the scoop on all the different room categories so I am confident in this report.

We made quite a bit of use of the hotel taxi driver and van service and they were clean, professional and on time (though require advance planning.)

At check-out there we were initially charged more than double what we owed - that was sorted out after a lengthly conversation, but no apologies were made about it and I found the manager to be neither friendly nor an accommodating person and possibly the least friendly working at the hotel. Do not count on late check-out - I was made to understand that this hotel is often quite full and our wedding group checked out on a Sunday (you wouldn't think a Sunday check-in would be so popular) and none of our friends who had planned to stay the whole day were able to get late check-out.

Lastly, the wedding itself was lovely and went off without a hitch - the hotel is to be commended for that!

Room Tip: Get a suite or junior suite or you will not have a view and will have either noisy AC/generator nois...
