This is tranquility amongst the madness!! Walking off the street into casa Canabel is like walking into paradise. From the moment we arrived to when we left, the staff could not have been nicer. Pablo (I think was his name) was fantastic, so helpful, even offered to go next door when I asked if I could get some ice-cream!
The room was fab, a/c, bed v comfy, sheets amazing, best sleep in Colombia! The bathroom really clean, brilliant shower, with hot water, although not really needed with the heat!
The roof terrace was beautiful and always a breeze. You can have breakfast up there if you want or downstairs or room.
There was bikes available to take out which was a bonus. They arranged bus to Santa Marta which was handy but journey ended up taking a lot longer than we had expected so it is good to confirm!
Definitely would stay here again and for longer if we could afford it, absolutely loved it!!

Casa Canabal Hotel Boutique is a small boutique hotel located in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. With great service, good rooms and a Caribbean and colonial retro feel, it makes for an excellent weekend getaway from busy Bogotá.
I stayed from the 13th until the 15th of October.

Check-in
We were supposed to arrive on Friday night, however torrential rain (and what I suspect was bad management by Avianca) meant that our flight was cancelled and postponed to Saturday morning. As soon as we were informed that our flight was cancelled we called Casa Canabal to let them know: we had to cancel our airport transport, an excursion we had booked for Saturday morning and the room for Friday night. Even though it was a holiday in Colombia and that they were probably full, they said it was no problem and that they would not charge us the night and that they would take care of everything. Excellent! I must say that they really over performed. We called at 8.30pm when we were supposed to check in just one hour later. This excellent treatment meant that they were really going the mile further and something that I wasn’t expecting, but that was really appreciated.
Next morning our flight finally departed and we were punctually picked up at Cartagena airport and taken to the hotel. The check-in experience was very good. As soon as we entered the gorgeous colonial building we were offered an ice-cold fruit drink (I am not really sure of what it was) that was very tasty. Check-in was brief and fast, the lady that was at the reception was extremely helpful and efficient.
We also decided to make a reservation for a trip to island “San Pedro de Majagua” and they took care of everything for us. Again excellent service, very attentive.

The room
We booked a junior suite.
The room was part of the great stay I enjoyed at Casa Canabal. Great bed, great linens. Really nice details like complimentary slippers, coffee machine, and a iPod dock station with great sound quality! It was also very quiet, I got abundant sleep.
The room was spotless and very well maintained. No sign of wear.
The bathroom was quite big, with nice amenities. Good rain shower, with respectable pressure and temperature. However, there was a slight disappointment; there was no bathtub, something I was expecting from a “junior suite”.

Breakfast
I only enjoyed breakfast one morning, had no time for more! So my opinion is based on just this one breakfast and unfortunately I can’t comment too much.
Breakfast was a la carte, even though I usually prefer buffet, is understandable in Casa Canabal given the size of the hotel. The arepa con huevo I had was very good and certainly a welcome opportunity to try some of the local cuisine!

Common areas
There are two pools, one in the rooftop, surrounded by many sofas, tables and a small bar with a helpful waiter. There is also a massage table. The size of the pool in the rooftop is quite small, is not intended for swimming just for relaxing. For my taste, the temperature of the water was a bit too warm. Give Cartagena’s furnace-heat and humidity I would have preferred something more refreshing.
The other pool is located in the central patio, since its greater depth and that it does not receive as much sunlight as the other does, the water is much cooler and at least to me, much more agreeable. Towers were available in both pools.
The rest of the hotel is nicely decorated with many little touches that make your stay more special and comfortable. There was some furniture, like the red sofas, that at least to me, were a little bit out of place. However, I understand that is a matter of personal taste.

Check-out
Check-out was flawless and a great experience once more. As I said before, we were not charged the first night since we didn’t make it and furthermore, they printed our boarding passes, they let us use a room (for showering) after check out with no hassle and they called a taxi to take us to the airport.

Conclusion
It might not be the best hotel in Cartagena, however I believe it gives great value for money. Great staff, always smiling and helpful. Good rooms and good location. I would definitely recommend it and if I ever go back, I will surely repeat.

The hotel is small but beautiful. It is not inside the old city walls but a very short walk, and the area that is in in is also very cool. Just down the street from an awesome salsa club, Cafe Havana. Amazing roofdeck and the rooms are pretty nice. The best part is the staff. Everyone was extremely helpful and went out of their way to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. Cannot thank them enough for such a wonderful experience.

We initially booked this hotel online, only to receive an email they day before arriving that they were booked out. We were very upset and informed them we had no option but to leave bad reviews, then magically 2 rooms became available and our initial rate. So we were wary upon arrival, but after the free airport transfer we were warmly welcomed with delicious watermelon juice and apologies for the mix up. Our rooms were nice, we had a leaky ceiling but it did not bother us. The breakfast was delicious, and the rooftop pool lovely for a refreshing dip. Small though, if there were a lot of people. It's just a short walk into the walled city, but with many restaurants close by it's not always necessary to go in. I always felt safe in Cartagena, we had a lovely time and enjoyed our time at this hotel.

We went to Cartagena for 4 nights staying at Casa Canabal.
I looked for ages on tripadvisor tryiing to narrow down the hotel and I am so happy I found this one, we enjoyed our stay than in no other hotel before. The airport pick up was arranged and free. We took one of the Junior suites and loved the room. Love the design and colour scheme and all the little details and attention to detail, as you only find them in smaller boutique type of places.Coming from a not so service oriented country, we loved the attentive staff.Nothing was asked to much. When we booked the red bus tour they even braught us to the bus stop rather then trying to explain where to wait. We fully enjoyed our stay and our first time visit to Cartagena. I would recommend the hotel to everyone and surely come back.

Room Tip: Ask for quiet rooms the ones towards the street can be noisy at time

I stayed here in June and booked the top suite in the hotel. I checked out of the hotel and settled my account in full - (paid for minibar and other incidentals at checkout). I asked the hotel to keep my luggage as i was traveling further in Colombia and left a $10 tip. When I returned for my luggage 3 days later I was informed that the hotel forgot to charge taxes and that there were also additional things from the mini bar.....i couldnt believe this was happening..I thought when you checkout your account is settled at that time.....maybe they felt I had money and wanted to take advantage--that is exactly how i felt. I only have me to blame as I usually stay at Casa Lola which is a much more authentic and courteous experience. If you stay here, beware of some shady characters at the front desk.

Room Tip: paid over $300/night - you get a much better bargain at casa lola.....

This hotel is in a sketchy area. If you can, stay inside the walled city instead.
The building itself is beautifully restored and well kept, but the room we got on the ground floor was very small and had a humidity smell to it. A wooden shutter was the only separation from the hallway. Staff was friendly, but unable to serve our breakfast in time, so we had to leave with empty stomachs. We got a half rate promotion which made it acceptable, but paying full price on this hotel would not be worth it.
