Chill House Backpackers Hostel

This hostel is located in a lovely plaza in the old centre of the city and has 4 rooms, 2 big dorms, 1 small dorm and one private room. The community area could be maybe a little bit larger, but as there are never a lot of people at the same time there it's ok. Lovely balcony overlooking the plaza, a small patio in the back, kitchen, AC in rooms. It could use one bathroom more, but I never had to wait more than 5 minutes.
Absolutely amazing stuff!!!! I was in 2 other hostels in Cartagena and I had rather a bad experience, but here it was excellent.
Nice atmosphere

When we first walked into The Chill House, we were offered cold lemonade and a smile. The owner personally greeted us and explained that his hostel was supposed to feel more like home than hostel.
Although the staff are friendly and the vibe is chill enough, the owner was not what he initially seemed. After waking up the following morning, he approached us and told us we had to pay 15,000 COP more than initially agreed upon, and if we refused, we would have to leave immediately.
His body language became aggressive, and when my girlfriend protested in a respectable and fair way, he briskly strode toward her with a menacing look in his eyes and his right arm raised.
Although he managed to get a hold of himself (after I stepped between him and my gf) it was clear that we had no intention of staying.
To be fair, the staff were decent and the house keeper was adorable. But the place was below mediocre. The kitchen always seemed to be missing a few plates and pots/pans. And the owner was an aggressive liar.
All in all, worst hostel we've ever been to.

Myself and 2 friends stayed at the chill house and it's sister hostel Makako chill house over the xmas period. The management of these hostels was poor and inflexible. Upon a disagreement over our booking the manager shouted and swore at me down the phone. He repeatedly told me he was 'running a business' but spoke to me in a completely unacceptable way and spent far too much time hitting on his guests.

The chill house kitchen had ants crawling over the surfaces and was very badly equipped (2 bowls for the whole hostel).

Our dorm room was bright and noisy as the doors were tied open over a busy square. There were far too few bathrooms also.

The other staff members were friendly but not well informed outside of their promoted tours.

The only positive was the central location. We were extremely disappointed and dissatisfied. I would recommend you look elsewhere.

Our experience with the Chill House Backpackers was not too good.
One of our beds broke down, even though it was occupied by a light weight (58kg). When they fixed it, which they actually did right away, the pyjama trousers were missing. Instead of apologising for any of those incidents, they were just playing dumb by saying “Well, why would I take a pyjama trouser?”. Second of all, when returning to the hostel – we were gone for a trip -, our pre-booked and PAYED beds, were occupied and we had to move hostels. This would not have been too bad – there was just a hostel down the road – if they would have accompanied us, as they told us they would in the beginning, and volunteered to pay the remaining difference for the other hostel bed (was slightly more expensive), which is just normal when you mess up your reservations and there are overbookings. Then they kept on saying that it is not their fault due to bookings over hostelworld and we need to understand.
This hostel really needs to think in customer service and acting responsible and caring.

Best location ever! Inside the historic distric! Can be noisy until midnight in the front rooms. Has only two bathrooms, so there can be some lines during the morning and before sleeping.
The staff is very friendly and helpful, they are the heart of this hostel. During the day from time to time they serve free lemonade.
The beds could be better, but you still can get a good night of sleep.

This place was horrible. The rooms were so tiny, there was no room for our bags anywhere! The kitchen and bathrooms were awful, the beds were so ridiculously saggy and uncomfortable both my boyfriend and i barely got a wink of sleep! I actually got sick when i lay down on the bed after eating because it is so sunken it made the food come back up my throat! Worst of all, we had a serious emergency back home and had to leave after 1 night and management refused to refund the rest of the 3 nights we paid for in advance in good faith! We gave them 4 hours notice to arrange a refund and they still did not give it to us! My boyfriend's swiss watch and iphone charger were stolen in this hostel. There was constant LOUD MUSIC on all the time and an unnecessary party atmosphere on a monday night, which was irritating after a long journey to get there and just wanting to relax. The staff was too young and annoying and unhelpful, find something with a basic level of comfort at the very least!

we booked in 3 nights and on arrival you have to pay up front. We went for the air con dorm which had no room for anyones bags so 10-11 people stuff were scattered throughout the room. For this dorm and another 2 dorms there was only 2 showers with toilets for all. On the 2nd night music was still playing at 4am and the air con was set for 28C. we asked if this could be made lower and were told that 28C was ok. No one slept much that night as it was too hot. The 3rd night was like a night club. Loud music, drink and drugs being used right in front of you and the hostel staff did nothing. There is no escape to the loud music. There was 1 computer for use with internet but the staff seemed to be on that most of the time (facebook and youtube).Out of 11 months traveling this is the worst hostel i have ever stayed in. The only good thing is the location and the cleaner lady who was smiley and friendly.
