“Nice option in a central location”
Reviewed October 28, 2012

3 nights in double superior room at COP 120000 per night. Double bed and aircon. Weak WIFI signal in room but fine in other areas including attached cafe. On 2nd level above lobby. Bathroom functional but definitely a tight squeeze. Daily clean. No hot water which can sometimes be fun when you have aircon. Room was OK but not overly spacious if you want to spread out a little (ie my bag stayed closed). Easy 5 minute walk into old city. Located in red light area but the girls are harmless enough and always felt safe, even later at night. Big tourist police presence in area. 5 minute walk the other way to the fort / castle which is a must see. Taxi from airport in was $10 at 11pm but got one off the street going back for $5. Cafe attached has reasonable food and local shops very close by for water etc. Staff were very helpful with some understanding of English and plenty of places in the lobby and on 2nd floor to sit and chill. Laptop you can borrow for photos etc. Pretty good location and a very nice place to base yourself from.

After a terrible experience at Hostal Santo Domingo, I got a room for only 50 000 Pesos at Casa Baluarte and that was such a relief. A clean, beautiful traditional house with all comodities wifi included given on a quiet patio. The staff was extremely nice and helpful and they kept my luggage a whole week in their locker. Highly recommendable!

A gorgeous hotel.

We booked a room with two single beds and a fan but it was excruciatingly hot so we asked for an a/c room for the next two nights. Unfortunately, they only had a room with a double bed in and it was quite small.

The hotel is located in a great area - lots of bars and restaurants around but not at all noisy inside. The old town is about 5-10 minutes walk and is gorgeous but the restaurants there are very expensive so staying this side of town is a good option.

Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Get an a/c room!

The hostal is very small but very nice inside , very clean and the staff is very friendly.
6 minutes walked to the clock tower and old town, 15 minutes walk to Bocagrande.

The room was ok, the toilet very small but was clean, I do suggest pay a room with air-con not fan, we had the room with a fan and was to hot at night so difficult to sleep.

General, is a good choice, if you are missing the pool because this hostal did not have one, we went to hotel playa in Bocagrande and we paid $20.000 COP per person about £8 for the service, at the end of the day you always saving.

Room Tip: room with a air-con

We stayed here for 3 nights in May 2012.

We got a good deal on the price and were more than happy with the hostal. We opted for a room without AC, unfortunately the fan was a little to noisy to sleep and on opening the window to cool down over night, in the morning we both had a quite a few mosquito bites.

The hostal staff were very friendly and knowledgeable about the area, recommending nice places to get some breakfast or go for a cocktail.

The hostal was very clean and the social areas were very pleasant to relax.

Room Tip: Pay a little but extra and get a room with A/C.

We were pleasantly surprised by this tidy little place. The staff were fine and our room was good enough. The place is bright and airy and the location on Half Moon Street is good. We looked into several hotels in the area and this one was the best we found. Not as cheap as some of the others but the extra cost was well worth it.

The hostel is located in a historic neighborhood Getsemani, on the touristy Calle Media Luna. It is only five minutes’ walk to the “walled city”. There are many bars and restaurants within few blocks.
This hostal, more like a hotel that a hostal, is located in tastefully restored colonial building. It features two courtyards between two floors of hotel rooms. The main courtyard provides plenty of seating and shade and is perfect for relaxing after long walk in the hot historic city. There is also a small café located at the entrance to the hostal. It serves nice shakes.
This is a review of my third stay in Baluarte, during my second visit to Cartagena. I was staying in this hotel twice before in May and June the previous year. My first two visits and this last visit to this hotel were two quite different experiences. This time I arrived to Cartagena without reservation and at the end of high season. It was a bit hard to find accommodation. All accommodations in the neighborhood I visited were fully occupied and surprisingly much more expensive than they were just six months ago and more expensive then I would expect them to be in high season. I recommend making reservation if visiting during high season.
On this visit, my room (109) was located on the main floor with its door and a window opening onto the main courtyard. It was quite small for the double occupancy intended for. The door into the bathroom was very small and a larger person would have problem getting in. The room had a bed, nightstand, closet, TV and a ceiling fan. The fan was broken as it only had two high speeds (speed 1 & 2 were the same). This made it difficult to sleep with the fan on as it was too strong and noisy (even on the low speed). The room was clean. The linen and pillows were of good quality and clean as well. The bed mattress was a bit saggy. This room is also located directly on the bottom of a staircase. It was a bit noisy at times and the light in the staircase was illuminating my room at night… (But the staff kept on turning the light off after my request). Overall it was a bit disappointing experience this time.
My two rooms during my first two visits were on second floor opening onto the small courtyard in the back. I was very happy back then with those rooms and found nothing that I didn’t like. They were also much nicer than room 109 on the main floor. Back then, I also paid 60% less for a single occupancy room. They were bargain.
The entire premises were very clean and nicely decorated. Wi-Fi close to the main courtyard was strong. The staff was very friendly and hospitable.
Even though Baluarte was very good value on my first visit, this time room 109 was not.
I can still highly recommend Hostal Baluarte, provided that you avoid rooms on the main floor facing the nice courtyard (rooms 110, 111 and specifically room 109).
I am rating Baluarte only 3/5 stars for my last visit, but I would rate it 5/5 stars for my first two visits. Your experience will depend on what room you will have. If you have the chance, ask to see more rooms before you check in.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms on main floor opening onto the main courtyard (rooms 110, 111 and specifically 109).
