“Where the beach is yours”
Reviewed August 1, 2012

The Kohsamui is an affordable boutique hotel at the beach of Manzanillo del Mar. It´s more than half an hour from the historic centre of Cartagena by car, but is worth the effort and the money you will have to spend on taxi drives (30.000 COP one way - more at night). During daytime, there is a bus going to the centre and even to the entrance of Castillo San Felipe at the top of every hour for just 1.500 COP. It leaves in front of the village church. The staff was so lovely and dropped everything to take me to the right place since there is no sign indicating a bus stop. Thank you so much again.

At the beach, you will almost feel like Robinson Crusoe since there are hardly any other people around. It´s not a beautiful beach and there is some rubbish like at any Colombian beach (even including Islas de Rosario), but at night you´ve got the sound of the ocean and the starlit sky all to yourself. It was amazing spending hours in a chair just starring at the moon and stars and listening to the waves. Thank you, Maria, for this spontaneous idea of yours.

Maria, the owner of this four-roomed-gem, is always reaching for the stars to make your stay a highly enjoyable and memorable one. The interior design and the food are a delight. But even I have to admit that having dinner at the Kohsamui is a bit pricy and it is not always clear what you can order for breakfast. Knowing some Spanish will help getting the most out of your stay, I guess.

You should decide quickly on going to the Kohsamui because others have found out that this beach is a lovely place and there will be another hotel next door. And maybe more to come. I just pray this won´t become a noisy and touristy place in the near future. Would be very sad.

Let´s not forget: Maria knows the best taxi driver of Cartagena. He is very reliable, honest and takes you back safely at night. It´s so great chatting with him that time flies. Muchas gracias, Jesus.

Thank you for your exceptional description of the Kohsamui experience. Our job is based on your satisfaction, we are always improving things to offers you the best. As mentioned in other answer, We have set a new menu for breakfast which have 5 delicious options, it is in English and Spanish so we can have a better communication with our guests, in this way you will have a better experience for starting the day. Jesus is a extraordinary persons with all our confidence, Kohsamui recomend him for all the transportation of the guests; we will transmit your great words to him. Talking about the beach of manzanillo, unfortunately not all the areas of this long beach are clean, we try to do our best effort 100 mts on our front, cleaning the trash but it is out of our hands to solve the problem of all the beach, we have talked to the local goverment in order to create cleaning campaings but it have been just a frustrated and disapointing conversation. We will insist for sure. Thanks for prefering Kohsamui during your stay in Cartagena and thanks for your invitation to world travellers for visiting us, here we are ready to give you the best relaxing experience... great emotions converge here, discover them!!!!

After the oppressive heat of Cartagena, 2 nights here was a welcome relief. The hotel arranged a taxi to pick us up from Cartagena and bring us to the beach. The staff were all pleasant except one of the kitchen staff seemed a bit put out most if the time, no smile at all. We felt like we were asking a big favor to order dinner. We also felt some pressure to eat dinner early, before 7 which we dont like. The owner is very nice and checked we were comfortable. The room was nice and very cool. Right on the beach, nice to hear the sound of the waves. Good food in the restaurant but expensive. Breakfast very average, we had to ask for coffee the first day and it was a choice of Arepe with egg or scrambled eggs. I dont mind a simple breakfast, BUT When you pay well over $100 US a night you should get juice and coffee and fresh fruit for breakfast, not just eggs, at hostels I have had better breakfasts. Overall, pleasant stay, beach long for nice walks except when the rubbish is washed up, definitely not a really clean beach.

Dear guest, We are really sorry for any bad impression of the kitchen service; I have talked to them to clarify some basic service instructions and meal times. Thank you so much for your comments about food and breakfast, now we have Breakfast a la carte, with 5 deligh options, variety totally included. Food prices at the restaurant are reasonable if you compare them with any similar sea food restaurant in Cartagena. Anyway, I am always available to receive your suggestions during your stay, if there´s something to solve I can organize it inmediatly. Thank you and hope you to come back on a next opportunity to evaluate our new service advantages.

Coming to Kohsamui after staying three nights in Cartagena was the best thing we could have done. There are not too many tourists around this small fishing town which made it very relaxing. The owners spoke a little English which helped tremendously and the chef was amazing. The staff bent over backwards to make our stay perfect and I am grateful that they helped cater to my food allergies. The hotel itself is gorgeous and exudes a sense of tranquility with hammocks and the sound of the ocean. If you want a quiet place to stay on the beach away from tourists, I would highly recommend Kohsamui.

Thanks for your excellent review. We are really proud of Kohsamui Hotel de Mar because it is a place that provide happyness and relaxation to the spirit and the body. We offer variety of menus to allergic people, as written by this guest because the most important in Kohsamui is the welfare of our clients. Clean and spacious rooms, spa, variety of food and a wonderful sea in front, are just some of our major advantages. Thanks to all our lovely guests.

The best place to relax near Cartagena. Amazing local people, and great food on the beach. Sleeping with the sound of the sea is the best experience. The small staff is also great. I love this place.

Room Tip: Try not to get late at night if you need to eat! Or, if that's your plane, let them know that yo...

Thank you so much for this great review, Kohsamui is a hotel for relaxing and romantic experiences. It is a place to connect the soul with the sea sensations and just enjoy every second as the last. We are really proud of the satisfaction in every guest. Coming soon we are going to stablish minibar and snack services in the rooms, so all the guests will find light options to eat if it´s late at night. Thank to all our guests for the great support.

This is a very nice hotel. The owners are extremely friendly and helpful and both speak English in case your Spanish is a bit rusty.
The food is superb, a bit pricey but definitely worth it.

There's absolutely nothing you can do in this town (Manzanilla) which makes it the ultimate place to relax a couple of days. The hotel is located right on the beach, the rooms big and comfortable (a/c).

If you want to get away from the heat of Cartagena, I definitely recommend it.

We stayed for 2 nights in March and, upon arriving from having spent 2 nights in Cartagena, immediately wished we had spent all our nights at Kohsamui and just taken day/evening trips into Cartagena. The beach is clean and perfect for long walks, the water is great for refreshing swimming, the food is delicious and there are fun activities to do even for a couple hours (touring the mangroves by guided pole-canoe). However, perhaps the most wonderful thing about Kohsamui (apart from the owner, Maria, herself whose passion for the area and hotel is infectuous) is the level of pampering and relaxation from the moment we arrived. The rooms are tranquil and ocean-inspired. But the large common palapa-covered deck with hammocks, outdoor couch and chairs, etc, was our favorite aspect of the hotel - reading, napping, watching the sunset. We found Kohsamui to be a far better value than staying in Cartagena, and Kohsamui seems to have more opportunities for adventures beyond the city. We stayed in a corner room/suite and had far better breakfasts for less than what we spent in Cartagena. Confirming there is no hot water (water is tepid), but I didn't miss it. Rooms are very clean and staff is wonderfully accomodating. We look forward to returning!

We stayed here during the high season (Colombian school holidays 15 December to 15 January) as a more affordable alternative to soaring hotels prices in the walled city area of Cartagena. At $282,500 (pesos) a night for suite (basically a corner room) it was good value, and with windows on two sides of the room which allowed the natural sea breezes to cool the room without the need for air conditioning. However, when the wind dies down, the A/C was quite and efficient. As other reviewers have said, there is no hot water, which while it's not absolutely necessary on the coast, it is normal for hotels at the price to provide hot water. The huge verandah with sofas and a couple of hammocks is a good place to read a book to the sound of the waves. The menu for lunch and dinner is mainly fish, well-prepared and tasty, but a little pricey outside of the main touristy areas of Cartagena.

The owners are very friendly and helpful, although the service from the staff is quite typical of the coast - variable.

The beach is practically pristine and great for a walk. There are a few high-end hotels and condominiums dotted along the beach. The wonderful thing is the absence of hawkers, so you can relax.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for one of the two suites.
