Half-Day Tour to Totumo Mud Volcano from Cartagena
Reviewed September 3, 2013

After a fun ride with fellow tourist out to the sight of the world's largest "mud" volcano. I immersed myselt in as it turned out, in theraputic mud. Not only were my ashy elbows smoothed out, my perennially sore ankle was allieviagted it took me a couple of days to realize my ankle albeit soft tissue was not longer troubling me. I'm back to coach and playing basketball, I plan to start playing tennis soon.

I did this by myself going by the lonely planets guidelines. From cartengena centre to terminal i paid 1800 pesos for bus then got berlinas bus to nearest stop for 15000 each way & got motor taxi to volcan 10mins for 2500 each way. Then i had to pay 5000 to each person for entrance to bath, locker, massage, wash in lake&photos which was 25000. Total cost 59000, so i guess it is more expensive to do it alone &it probably takes longer too. Overall it was fun but i was dissappointed that i had to pay 4 people for services but after reading the reviews i gave it to good cause&they did great jobs

We booked through our hotel for this. Set off 9AM even though the bus came 20 minutes early.
You get there put your belongings in a locker, swimsuit on and camera to the man so he can snap some for a small price.
Climb the hill have a dip in the mud, climb out get washed by the river.
We where supposed to be back at 2PM however still at the restaurant at 2:30PM not very organised.
The food is fried chicken or fish with rice salad was okay.
If you have a day to really spare do this

if you love spa treatments, i recommend that you go to the volcanos del el totumo. you will be pampered and massaged ,then scrubbed off for a small fee. when i say small fee, its pennies of what they charge you in nyc. $5 us for the whole massage, scrubbing and cleaning.

Our tour was booked through the hostel with Ruta Ecológica and costed 45000 COP including lunch. The 45 bus ride was comfortable and we were explained in great detail what to expect of the experience. Seeing the 'volcano' at first is a bit of a let down as it looks more like a big termite hill. You first go into a little house where you leave all your clothes and valuables and only take your camera and sandals. Up on the top some dude takes your camera and snaps you while in the mud, this dude really knows what he's doing and takes classic shots and even some video.

The actual mud bath is a few meters down into the crater, so you have to climb another ladder which can be a bit scary. The guys in the pool make you lay down and give you a quick massage, nothing too special but it really isn't optional. You then float around in the mud for a bit and this is a really special feeling. Take your time to enjoy it (put your feet down!)

Afterwards you take some more funny mud shots on top of the ladder and then walk to the lake to be bathed by the ladies. This is the best bit! They wash you thoroughly and really get into your pants! Fun.

Back at the little house, the locals will come to you to cliam their 3k for their services. I think it's all worth it and apparently they're a very poor community so you're helping them out.
