Half-Day Tour to Totumo Mud Volcano from Cartagena
Reviewed February 20, 2013

As far as adventure type day trips are concerned, this is not amazing. It feels touristy and small, but pretty funny in the end. I don't really think going in this mud is like a spa or anything - its just plain silly. There are lots of other people there and you only spend 10 mins in the volcano.. afterwards they wash you in the river which is really refreshing. On the way back to cartagena, they bring you to Manzanillo del mar which is a local beach area so you get to see something else of the area. The sand is dark, but soft and the water felt great. Lunch is included and very traditional, simple, but tasty. Overall a good experience and a good way to see some areas outside of the city. For the price of aprox $35 US - I found it to be a really fun and nice day.

This just might be the dumbest tourist attraction I have ever experienced! Our tour group burst out laughing when we arrived at the "volcano" and realized it is nothing more than an anthill on steroids. Definitely man-made. For sure, our expectations should have been dampened by our tour company before we got there. A few of our group were prepared to get in the mud, but upon seeing the slime pit they quickly changed their minds. Also, the surrounding "facilities" are pathetic ("primitive" is the word one uses when trying to be kind). Let's be clear......this is a crap hole. Unless, of course, you believe wallowing in mud is good for your health and you don't have a problem getting in the same slime hundreds of others have wallowed in before you. But guess what......our group agreed we will all be talking about this "so-bad- it's-funny" site for weeks to come when we get home. And several other groups came in while we were there and seemed to enjoy the experience. Different strokes for different folks......

Nice side trip to the mud volcano, lots of oozing mud to immerse yourself in without the fancy bevery hills prices for a true ´spa´ treatment.

Between Cartagena and Barranquilla you'll find the Volcan del Totumo (volcano of the calabash). It is a mud volcano in which people can take a mud bath. It is a sulfur mud and is very attractive due to its cosmetic and medicinal CHARACTERISITICS. Nearby is a lake where the mud can be removed from the body. when you enter the volcano you can experience the phenomenon of high density of the mud that does not allow the person to sink or dive into the mud. IT is a unique experience.

It's like nothing you'll ever experience. The volcano isn't too high up, but it can be tricky walking up the rickety stairs. Once you're in, take your time and get the massage. At 3000 pesos why not. Also, bathing in the river is a must-do. As others have said, it's as if you're two years old and your mother is bathing you. Very unique and again, at 3000 pesos it's worth enjoying and helping the men and women who provide all the services at this location earn a living.
