In the old city. Five stars from us! Stayed here late November 2013. This is the most wonderful Hotel! We loved the intimacy, the wonderful staff, the ambience of the place. Total of seven rooms. Wonderful room, clean, great bed & amenities. AC in room and great location for this hotel. WiFi doesn't work in room (but what can u expect if walls are 18" thick;) Just step out of your room and WiFi works great. Steps from Cathedral Santo Domingo and the amazing Santo Domingo square. Absolutely five stars from us? Many wonderful restaurants very close and it is right in the heart of old Cartegena! This is absolutely our Hotel of choice. Previously stayed at Sofitel Santa Clara (expensive) but 5 stars from us, condo's at Boca Grande 3 stars from us (spartan) and a bit run down. Price at El Marques was cheap for the amenities. Pool inside but not covered as it should not be covered. Perfect setup. BTW, great restaurant in the hotel and all the way around this beautiful city. We WILL be going back again and again and....

I booked El Marques because from the photos it looked like just the type of boutique hotel that I typically enjoy. I've stayed in a similar boutique hotel in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico and wanted a similar experience for my friend and I. From the moment we arrived we were welcomed by the staff with a refreshing mint lemonade. When they showed us to our room we were speechless - the photos online are very good but walking the property is indeed something special. We were on the top floor facing the street with a gorgeous Romeo & Juliet balcony overlooking all the activity. The entry to our room was a magnificent hall with three R&J balconies and tall exposed beam ceilings and enormous, antique wooden doors. Our bathroom was modern, clean and luxurious and the beds were comfortable, not that we spent much time in this space. The rest of the hotel has so much character and old world charm coupled with modern amenities. There is a fountain and a wishing well in the in the center of the courtyard adjacent to the bar and one of the restaurants. The pool was just up a few steps and felt like a peaceful oasis. We had breakfast at the hotel each morning and were thrilled with the service and the quality of the cuisine. It was also wonderful to be able to borrow bicycles from the hotel and go out exploring each day. The hotel is close to everything - including museums, churches, markets as well as the sea - and yet is a quite retreat at night. The entire premises is like a sanctuary. I highly recommend this hotel and commend the staff for being extra friendly, providing superior service and making us feel so welcome. When I go back to Cartagena El Marques is the only hotel where I will stay. We went for Thanksgiving and truly are so thankful that we stayed at the El Marques!

My partner & I really enjoyed El Marques. We loved the old style house furnished with modern lounge like furniture, the beautiful tropical garden & lounge music. The atmosphere was perfect for such a relaxed city like Cartagena. We also enjoyed lounging around the pool after a hot days exploration around the city. The pool side bed is a very welcoming.
We also highly recommend Bohemia, the hotel restaurant. It was on the pricey side but really worth it. Food was wonderful.
The hotel/restaurant staff were very friendly & helpful. Room was clean, bed was huge & compfy with 3 types of pillows to choose from.
We stayed directly above the courtyard which was a little noisy at times, best bring earplugs. But I would still stay there in spite of the noise. We chose to stay in a smaller boutique hotel for an authentic Cartagena experience with some class. Overall we really enjoyed our stay & would highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Try and get a room further back towards the pool in order to reduce the sound of the courtyard at ni...

I booked the hotel for me and a group of friends after my wedding in Bogota. The hotel exceeded all my expectations. The service was absolutely amazing! Small hotel 8 rooms with a beautiful courtyard and a nice size pool. The staff was extremely nice and everyone in my group of 8 could not be happier with the hotel selection!
The management was more than accommodating when they let us check out at 7:00 pm because we had a 10:00 pm flight!
Breakfast delicious and the "welcome yerbabuena lemonade" was to die for!!!!!

How cool this place is. The pictures do not do it justice. A perfect blend of old Cartagena history with a modern design aesthetic. Amazing food (probably the best we had in the entire week we were in Colombia). Amazing service--the entire staff from front desk to bartender to maids were so kind and so helpful.
We were in room 301 which is on the street side of the hotel. Take earplugs or a sound machine (we had a sound machine with us) or you probably won't get much sleep. Who gives a crap about WiFi and TV when you are in one of the coolest places in the world?!? Our A/C kept our room freezing cold at all times and the power went out several times while we were there but the hotel has it's own generator.
Cartagena is burning hot with tons of humidity so be prepared for that-drink lots of water. A trip to Las Islas del Rosario is a must and we had a private guide to tour us around the city for the day (definitely worthwhile). I hope to go back soon as Cartagena is quickly becoming a tourist hotspot which will undoubtedly ruin the charm....

We stayed for 3 nights, as a frequent traveler I could say the hotel is way overpriced, the air conditioning system of the room just lower the temperature a couple degrees, the room bar is not replenished everyday, the Internet works only sometimes. It has been a strike and the concierge didn't have the slightest idea that the main road was taken and closed, we asked then to inform us when it's over, then they told us it was over, and when we walked over the turmoil and asked the police they ask us who have the bogus information because it wasn't over at all and told us to be careful. Whe you ask about the iInternet problem they react as you are bothering them, and since it was a business trip in the 21st century we needed the Internet. I don't wanna see my roaming bill because I put a lot of megas on my phone since they didn't have the Internet up. When you pay above US$280 you might expect a little bit more.

I've been on the hunt for a boutique hotel that will lure me away from the Santa Clara...and i think i've found it...
This is an utterly charming hotel which will enchant you. Just 8 rooms in total so very personalised service and quiet. Rooms are large, modern and simply decorated, kingsize beds, monsoon shower...but it is the setting - the inner courtyard and nooks and crannies - which is to die for. It is soooo beautiful. The pool is also lovely and a decent size for a boutique hotel.

There is a wine cellar (where you can dine), comfy leather sofas (for among the best cocktails in cartagena), a small restaurant dining area, a "wishing well" (where you dine or have a drink) ...

If you are looking for an exclusive, beautiful, boutique hotel in the heart of the old town, this is definitely one i would recommend. It is the ONLY hotel i have found in cartagena which can rival the Santa Clara...(and is almost nicer because it is smaller and feels more exclusive!)

Also - they have just opened up their cocktail bar and restaurant, Bohemia, to the public in the evenings and we had one of our best meals and cocktails here too so if you don't stay, i would definitely recommend the restaurant and cocktails! (Passionfruit and corozo rum based cocktails were amazing!)
