I would like to thank everyone at the Cali Marriott for an outstanding stay! I traveled with my kids for a family reunion and enjoyed everything about our stay! The room was very nice, the service was wonderful, the breakfast was fresh and great. The hotel was very serious about security which made me feel so much better since I was alone with my kids in a country that I have not been to since 1975! All of us (14 in total) stayed at the hotel and we all enjoyed it. I look forward to my return.

Room Tip: We stayed on the 7th floor with a view of the city. The room was quiet and the AC was in great work...

It is the best hotel in Cali today! Great service in general, need to work a little on the restaurant side. Rooms are impeccable and the overall hotel ambient is great for business or leisure. Congratulations!

Quality of food is really good overall and the concierge lounge has a lot of options and great quality.

I spent a week at this property in May 2014. At the time of my stay, the hotel had been open for 5 months. In that time, any bugs had been worked out and the staff was totally on board and in full harmony. Every staff contact was A+ and then some...

Staff members with whom I had contact and who were absolutely tremendous were Johnny Steven and Bryan Andres from the bell staff; Juan Sebastian from the Market Place restaurant; and last but by no means least Maria Giraldo and Sarah Valero at the concierge desk. Thank you all..

The rooms were immaculate, comfortable and well designed, as one would expect. The rate was quite reasonable, especially compared to a comparable property in Bogota.

Food was excellent and reasonable. For those who gripe about hotel food being average, you'll be pleasantly surprised. There's a sushi bar in the lobby, which is a really nice change...

Overall, a great experience ....

Room Tip: The sushi bar in the lobby has a live band one night a week. You may wish to ask for a room that wou...

The Cali Marriott hotel offers clean, comfortable rooms with very good service. The front desk staff was friendly and eager to assist me at all times. The fitness center is certainly adequate with treadmills, seated and upright stationary bikes and some resistance equipment. The breakfast at the Market Restaurant was very good with a large selection of foods. The outside dining area looked very nice, although I did not dine outside. I would definitely stay at this hotel again.

I stayed here by myself waiting for a friend to catch up with me in Cali. From the moment I walked in, I was surrounded by staff trying to help me. As a platinum rewards member, I was upgraded to a gorgeous one bedroom suite on the executive level. The staff on the executive level were incredibly trained, and all of them knew my name within the first day. Food on the executive level was also fantastic.

As a frequent hotel visiter, I was impressed by the modern gym equipment(personal TV's in all of the displays on cardio equipment), and friendly staff. Only negative experience I had was the miscommunication between staff on executive floor and first floor when I was trying to get a cab to the airport(they accidentally gave my cab away to someone else). With some slight communication improvements, it's well on it's way to becoming premier hotel in Cali.

Estimada Sra. Caroline.

The hotel is nice and new. Staff are OK, not that friendly or willing to help… No upgrade was offered to this Gold MR member, even though the hotel was at 30% occupancy.
The training of the front desk staff and the efficiency of the back-office personnel is appalling.
Seemingly, they could not handle the fact that I made 2 separate reservations, to stay at the hotel for leisure 3 nights and for business 1 night… That apparently was too much for them to handle.
My invoices were all with mistakes, my points and stays haven’t posted 2 weeks after my stay. I had to have the staff at the JW Marriott in Bogota intercede for me (they are managed by the same local company) to no avail.
Needless to say, my expense reporting will be a problem and the stay at the hotel left me with a bad impression.
There was just one staff member, Maria, at the concierge lounge… She was trying to help and seemed to “get it” but it seems she was not able to post my points and stays either.
Another issue, they could not figure out my tax exemption, even though I am a US citizen…. I had to pay 16% tax when other hotels handle the exemption without a problem…

A hotel of this supposed caliber should not open until its staff are fully trained and can handle simple transactions that many frequent travelers do.

Almost all excellent

Let’s start with the conclusion – I will definitely stay here again. Also, if you’re reading this, you probably want to know how this hotel stacks up against Spiwak and Intercontinental … I’ll do that at the end.

The almost all excellent:

The hotel is brand new, especially the 8th floor where we stayed and which was open only 2 weeks when we got there. If hotel rooms can have that “new room smell, this one did. (That’s not bad.) Reasonable size, nice amenities in the room (we stayed on the club level, so don’t know about the amenities on other floors) and, as in all Marriotts, very comfortable bed. The building looks good, nice design, not too big. Good location in an area for socialization and restaurants, and this hotel seems to have succeeded very quickly where most never succeed – attracting people who aren’t staying at the hotel to its restaurants. In fact, when I was in The Market, their general restaurant, the manager told me about 70% of the patrons were not guests of the hotel – and the restaurant was full. There are 2 restaurants: The Market and Tanooshi. The Market is a general American restaurant with salads, burgers, pizza and pasta. Quality of the food is very good, portions are good and prices are what you’d expect in a mid-range US restaurant. And some of the interesting and very good aspects of the menu are the “build it yourself” burgers, pizzas and pastas along with an extensive salad bar – good selection and good execution. Tanooshi is a sushi bar. We had several items and they were all really good – and prices there are also reasonable for an American sushi bar.

The hotel management are excellent – very helpful, very professional, they all speak English well, including remembering names. When I say the following, they will know who I am :) - I had a medical issue and inquired at the desk about a doctor. Without going into details, the hotel management was great and I couldn’t have asked for better attention. (By the way,
Victor, the first diagnosis was wrong – they were just some non-contagious insect bites. :) )

The club or concierge lounge is nice and casual (as opposed to opulent and plush), with an earthy color tone and design (like the whole hotel) with a very Zen-like roof-top patio. Very good staff in the concierge club and most of the food – breakfast, daytime snacks, evening hors d’oeuvres and nighttime desserts was very good. As I mentioned about The Market, one of the great things is that the staff wants to know how to make things better. This happened also in the Concierge Club. Example: one of the desserts was delicious chocolate cookies (“delicious” is my word), but they were so rich that I could see that the big cookies they were making would often be only partially eaten and a lot thrown out; so I suggested making them smaller to avoid too much waste, and the very next day they were smaller (and still delicious).

The gym is not only brand new but well equipped for a gym that’s not small, not big, but perfect for a road warrior who’s there for a few days.

By management’s own words, this hotel is designed for business travel, not family vacations … and we can see that.

They have an airport shuttle which we did not take advantage of. Maybe next time.

The other:

All of the following can be fixed and some are simply related to being new (I’m giving the benefit of the doubt). The biggest need for improvement is in the waiters and waitresses of both restaurants. First, while restaurant hosts/hostesses and management speak English well, few of the waiters and waitresses do. For those who say, “You’re in Colombia, it’s their language” – you’re right but that’s why I stay at an American hotel, because there is a language difference and being at a Marriott means fewer communication issues. I’m sure these comments will be addressed, as management was very responsive to comments and suggestions. Second, the servers we had seem to be very inexperienced. I won’t go into details because management addressed the issues and I suspect those same things already won’t happen again. I’m in the hospitality business, so I can tell you I would also choose good attitude over experience – and I think that’s what they did, figuring they could teach foodservice, but good attitude has to be there from the start. Oddly, while the food pretty much everywhere else in the hotel is very good, the scrambled eggs in the concierge lounge could use some improvement.

As mentioned, the rooms are very comfortable but be careful about the door - it does not close itself.

In the category of neither good nor bad – the pool is small and doesn’t get much sun. It’s right off the sushi bar. Actually, it seems like it’s right in the sushi bar, the glass walls of which open to be a great open air bar/sushi restaurant. It looks great and is nice for a social dunk or party, but it’s probably not where you’d take the kids for a day at the pool and suntanning; and if you swim laps, you’ll have to swim a lot of laps.

Comparisons: see also my reviews of Spiwak and Intercontinental before Marriott opened. Honestly, they are all excellent hotels with different styles and features. I have stayed at all 3, I like all 3 and would enjoy returning to any of them. Having said that, here’s my comparison:

Spiwak has a big open air design, rooms are all comfortable suites with hardwood floors and you’re in the middle of Chipichape Mall. Great for shopping, movies, entertaining the kids and just keeping busy. Right in Spiwak hotel, there’s only one restaurant and it’s a little pricey, but lots of fast and casual dining in the mall. Marriott is closer to downtown and the business section, and is in an area where you’d go if you wanted to go out of the hotel for dinner or clubs. Spiwak is probably more kid- and shopper-friendly because of the mall. As I mentioned above, Marriott management says their hotel is more for business travelers. Reception/front desk staff at Spiwak speak ok English.

The Intercontinental is very close to the Marriott. The Intercontinental pool area is great – big, open, lots of trees. Rooms are traditional design and very comfortable. Reception/front desk staff speak English well. Good restaurant choices in and around the hotel.

In the category of hotel management and staff making you feel welcome and special along with personalized service, Spiwak is good, Intercontinental is very good, but the Cali Marriott is excellent.

Room Tip: Higher is better. One view is the city the other is the mountain. Take your pick.

Dear Mr. Steve.

I had reviewed your great comments and, honestly, I could not describe the hotel and its services in a better way.
Besides having excellent food, the restaurants are fun. The hotel location is very convenient and we are a block away from the Cali Gastronomical area, Granada.
I am glad you tried the Gym, the equipment is top of the line, we have the best internet in town, and the audiovisual equipment in the meeting rooms is a hotel differential in Cali. I hope next time you try the Spa, it is considered a hotel highlight.
We have reviewed you comment about the room doors and it has been fixed.

Best Regards,
