This is one of the best museums in the world, except the captions are misleading as Uigurs are not called such but Huihu. In one description, they use Huihu in Chinese but the true Uigur in English.

This museum is in my opinion the best thing in Urumqi. Go early in your trip and what you see elsewhere will fall into place better when you see it.

Downstairs is all about the minority cultures. Worth looking around, as you will mingle with (some of) them on the rest your trip. As one reviewer said, maybe a little slanted to the Chinese view of their minorities, but good nevertheless.

The gem is upstairs. The excavations, the mummies, the ancient history. A real eye opener. And if you go to Astana Tombs in Turpan later to see mummies in situ, the museum will explain the context far better than is done there.

The museum is well explained in writing, but the English speaking museum guides are excellent and add more (and answer questions).

A must when you arrive in Xinjiang

This museum is great! The exhibits are well put together and informative and there are some really cool artifacts. My 2.5 year old and 4.5 year old were able to enjoy a couple hours there and they especially liked the mummies. Best of all, it is free! In China, land of high priced entry fees, a free museum really stands out.

Had some time to kill in Urumqi. So glad we (parents and two teenaged children) decided to make a trip to the museum. Can't beat the price and I loved the mummies collection. That alone is worth the time.

This museum is superb. Going far back in time to the very beginnings of Chinese history and showing particularly the cultures that developed over time in the region of Xinjiang. There are well preserved mummies (a 4000 year-old beauty of Loulan) as well. All the items are labeled in english and well explained.
