“Flip Flop is Tip Top!”
Reviewed March 21, 2014

After being recommended Mix and Lazy Bones hostel, we found this on the backend of those and found it the cheapest for a private room.

Great chilled out atmosphere throughout the place, friendly staff with great English-speaking skills, very cheap beer sold on site and the food is incredible (and cheap!)

They always have events going on (dumpling parties, half-price cocktail nights) so it is never boring and is always a great way to pre-game before hitting LKF just down the street!

May, the bartender, is the cutest little Asian girl you will ever meet and if you are friendly enough, she will ensure your drinks are extremely strong (even on half-price cocktail night!)

It reminds me of how hostels used to be, it has a real sense of community and made it hard for us to leave after a week!

Room Tip: Make sure you do the Panda excursion through them as they get you through the doors a couple of hour...

Prefect location - close to public transport and walking distance from the center of the city as well as the bus station. We only stayed for two nights, but I would stay here anytime that we're in Chengdu in the future. The staff is very helpful with advice about where to eat and how to get around to the sights.

Room Tip: very convenient wet market downstairs.

The hostel is really easy to find, just off the main shopping street in Cheng-du, and so is very close to metro stops, bus stops and shops/restaurants. It is next to a small local park and at night and first thing in the morning you can see all the local people doing their exercises.

The reception area is very lively, with lots of people milling about, and lots of information about what's on, both in the hostel and trips out of the hostel. The staff are also very helpful – but don't rely on them for information about buses!

The room we had (a double en-suite) was small, and slightly damp, probably because the bathroom was a wet room (but it did have a really good shower). However, it was warm enough, and adequate for a couple of days.

We didn't eat at the hostel, but we did have some drinks in the communal area, which were reasonably priced (you also get a couple of free drink vouchers when you check in!). Lots of people seem to hang around the hostel during the day (probably for the wifi and cheap food), and it seemed a very friendly place.

Overall, I would definitely recommend the hostel and wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

We had a great couple of nights here at Flip flop.

Good location, short walk from the metro. Despite visiting in November the hostel was buzzing with a great atmosphere. Staff are friendly and very helpful, communal area is bright and fun.

There's a terrace on the first floor, but there seems to be a community living up there, which is a little awkward.

However, the question on everyone's lips was, what's on the 1st floor!

The best hostel I stayed at in China, by far! Friendly, outgoing staff. Nice, clean rooms and modern, spacious communal area. Great bar (well used on my part!) and delicious food menu. Chengdu seems on a bit of a crossroads for travellers in China, so the hostel is very popular, and the communal area is buzzing with people to talk to.

Taken on a great 'whitewater' bike tour around the city streets by the manager Laura, and had a fantastic night out with two of the staff, Mae and Georgia (though I felt my age in the morning!) The panda tour is excellent, where the guide has the inside knowledge to whisk you around the zoo escaping the crowds and seeing the pandas at their best.

Can't recommend it more highly, one of the highlights of my holiday. Keep up the good work Flipflop!

English speaking staff who is extremely happy and helpful; very service minded. Cozy place with good hang-out area. Don't rely on the WiFi to work though and bring warm clothes (depending on when traveling) since there are no heaters in the south of China.
